Journal of the World Association of Veterinary Anatomists
Edited by: Fred Sinowatz
Print ISSN: 0340-2096 Online ISSN: 1439-0264 Issues per Volume: Bi-monthly
The Journal of Veterinary Medicine, Series C, provides a public forum for anatomical investigations involving human, veterinary and zoological studies. The journal is supported by the World Association of Veterinary Anatomists to emphasize the need for such publications, but does not limit its interests to those of its members. An editorial committee comprised of internationally recognized anatomists assures a high level of scientific quality to the publication that is in accord with the desires of the publisher and WAVA.
During the years since its establishment, the journal has become well-known throughout the world as one of quality, with broad coverage of comparative anatomy. Articles are published in English with abstracts. Book reviews appear in every issue.
A supplement series entitled Advances in Veterinary Medicine/Fortschritte der Veterin鋜medizin is published in irregular sequence.
Fields of interest: Anatomical, histological, and embryological investigations involving human, veterinary, and zoological studies.

Anatomia Histologia Embryologia (Journal of Veterinary Medicine, Series C) publishes original scientific papers, short communications, invited reviews and book reviews from the fields of veterinarian anatomy, histology and embryology, and related fields, provided the articles have not been previously published elsewhere. The main objective of the journal is to present practically orientated basic research as well as applied research. Special emphasis is placed on links between veterinary medicine and the associated sciences of human medicine, zoology and agriculture. The publication language is English.
2. Submission and acceptance of manuscripts
Manuscripts should be sent for publication to:
Prof Dr Dr Fred Sinowatz Institut f黵 Tieranatomie II der Universit鋞 M黱chen Anatomia Histologia Embryologia Veterin鋜stra遝 13 D-80539 Munich Germany Tel: +49 (0)89 21 80 25-63 Fax: +49 (0)89 21 80 25-69 e-mail: f.sinowatz@anat.vetmed.uni-muenchen.de
Please submit your manuscript on diskette, zip, or CD-ROM with two hardcopies and retain a copy for yourself. Manuscripts must conform to the journal style and should be submitted in the final version containing all revisions. Upon acceptance of your manuscript, you will receive the form Manuscript Submission to be returned to the editor within (5) days. This form includes, among other items, your complete correspondence address, the copyright transfer agreement, and the guidelines for colour print charges.
The editor-in-chief and the editorial board make decisions on the acceptance for publication of the papers submitted. Evaluation of papers is conducted by reviewers who make decisions on acceptance, revision or rejection of papers.
Your manuscript will be destroyed three months after publication. Only appropriately marked originals will be returned. The publisher cannot be held responsible for any damage or loss through the post.
3. Requirements for manuscripts
3.1. Format Each original paper should be divided into Summary, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, and References. The following information should be given on page one of the manuscript: the name of the institution where the work was carried out, the title of the manuscript, the name(s) of the author(s), the address(es) of the author(s), the e-mail address of the corresponding author, and the number of figures and tables accompanying the manuscript.
The manuscript comprises two printouts of the text and a list of all figures and tables with their captions and titles on a separate piece of paper. In anticipation of the online edition, we ask that you convey the essential information within the first 60 characters of the captions. The manuscript must be typewritten on one side of DIN A4 (21 x 29.7cm) paper with a left margin of 4cm and double-spaced lines.
Each figure, table, and bibliographic entry must have a reference in the text. For all figures please include reproduceable artwork (marked with the author's name, short title, and figure number). Any corrections requested by the reviewer should already be integrated into the file.
The data carriers (diskette, etc.) must be PC/Windows-compatible and may not contain any files other than those for the current manuscript. Please include a list of the files, noting the file name, the computer program and its version number. Please do not import the figures into the text file. The text should be prepared using standard software (Microsoft Word, Word Perfect) or saved in rtf format; do not use automated or manual hyphenation. Please do not include footnotes.
For further information please consult: www.blackwell-science.com/elecmed/authors.htm
3.2. Length Original papers should not exceed 30 DIN A4 typewritten pages including figures, tables and references. Short communications should not exceed 5 DIN A4 typewritten pages including figures, tables and references. Summaries of original papers should not exceed 1200 characters, and those of short communications should not exceed 600 characters. Short communications may be given priority for publication.
The number and size of illustrations and tables should be kept to the minimum necessary.
3.3. Units, abbreviations and nomenclature All measurement specifications must follow the S.I. system. Solution concentrations are to be given in mol/l. All other concentrations are to be given in % (volume or weight).
Abbreviations of biological, chemical or other terms should only be employed when it is certain they are internationally known. The full name must be stated in brackets when an abbreviation is used for the first time in a paper.
All biological, chemical, medical or other names are to be given according to the most recent international nomenclature. In the case of substances or reagents obtained commercially, the name and address of the manufacturer or supplier (as a footnote) should be given the first time the product is mentioned. Products with a trademark should be marked with (c). Names of bacteria should be in accordance with the latest edition of Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology (The Williams and Wilkins Co., Baltimore). Viruses should be classified and named as recommended by the International Committee on the Nomenclature of Viruses. Names of micro-organisms and zoological or botanical names should be given in italics.
3.4. Illustrations and tables Figures should be saved in a neutral data format such as TIFF or EPS, and a printout should always be included. Powerpoint and Word graphics are unsuitable for reproduction. Please do not use any pixel-oriented programmes. Scanned figures (only in TIFF format) should have a resolution of 300 dpi (halftone) or 600 to 1200 dpi (line drawings) in relation to the reproduction size. Please submit the data for figures in black and white. However, colour photos can be reproduced in black and white (with a possible loss of contrast). Figures printed in colour are subject to an added charge. Colour print charges are explained on the manuscript submission form . Colour graphics should be created using the CMYK colour palette (print colours), not RGB (monitor colours). There is a charge for alterations to figures when carried out by the publisher.
Please note that figures will generally be reduced to fit within the column-width or the print area. This means that numbering and lettering must still be readable when reduced (e.g. maps) and that the scale might not correspond with the original (microscopic pictures), thereby invalidating references to scale in the text. These figures should include a bar the size of which is defined in the caption of the photograph concerned. If a figure is to be cropped, please mark the lines on a photocopy or tracing paper. Printouts should be made with a laserprinter at the highest resolution (> 600 dpi). If artwork is to be scanned, line drawings should only be contour drawings without halftones (shades of grey). Please do not use patterns; rough hatching is possible.
Graphs with an x and y axis should not be enclosed in frames; only 2-dimensional representations. Do not forget the labels and units. Captions for the figures should give a precise description of the content and should not be repeated within the figure.
Tables should be created using the table function.
3.5. References Each original paper should have a list of references which should be restricted to a minimum. The references should be listed alphabetically according to the name of the first author.
Every reference should be structured as follows: author or author's surname and initials of the given name; year of publication (without brackets); title of paper; name of the journal; volume number (bold); page numbers, e.g.
Gothe, R., Y. Gold and A. Kraiss, 1986: On the subspecific validity of Rhipicephalus evertsi mimeticus D諲itz, 1910. J. Vet. Med. B 33, 47-59.
Books or separate publications should be quoted as follows:
Boch, J. and R. Supperer, 1977: Veterinary Medical Parasitology. Paul Parey Scientific Publishers, Berlin.
Reference to the quoted literature in the text should be given by putting the name(s) of the author(s) in brackets, with the year of publication, e.g.: (Thein and H鋜tl, 1986).
3.6. Laboratory animals In experiments where animals were used, authors are requested to give full details about the animals (source, breeding, pathogen-free, conventional conditions, etc.) and their maintenance (standard diet, environment, etc.).
4. Copyright
Publication in the journal can only take place under the condition that the manuscript has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. Upon submission of the manuscript to the publisher, the author certifies that neither his contribution nor any foreign text or figures contained therein that he procures infringe upon the rights of a third party, and that he alone is authorized to dispose of the existing right of utilization with regard to copyright. The author will refrain from any other duplication and distribution or digital transfer and reproduction (e.g. on the Internet) during the period of the contract. For the duration of the lawful copyright, the author grants the publisher regardless of location the exclusive right of duplication and dissemination (right of publication) without restriction as to the intangible reproduction of the article, the right to make the article available to any individual online as well as the right of issuance of licenses to third parties nationally and abroad for the exercise of the granted ancillary rights. The publisher is authorized to make use of the utilization rights to which he is entitled, however, he is not obligated to do so.
5. Proof correction and offprints
When you receive proofs of your article, please check, sign and return them without delay. As changes to proofs are costly, we ask that you only correct typesetting errors.
Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file. The e-mail server must be able to accept attachments up to 4 MB in size. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following Web site:
www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available; in your absence, please arrange for a colleague to access your e-mail to retrieve the proofs.
The author will receive 25 offprints free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered on the form attached to the proofs. Orders placed at a later date are subject to a higher charge. Offprints and complimentary copies will be sent to the corresponding or first-named author for distribution, unless otherwise noted on the order form.
6. Book reviews
Books submitted for review are forwarded by the editor-in-chief to appropriate specialists for review. The review copy remains the property of the reviewer, but no royalty is paid. At the beginning of each book review, precise bibliographic details must be provided. Please use the system of punctuation in the following example:
Singleton, L. L., J. Mihail and C. M. Rush (eds), Methods for Research on Soil-borne Phytopathogenic Fungi. St. Paul, Minnesota: APS Press, 1993. 265 pp., 125 figs, 24 tables, US$ 34.00. ISBN 0-89054-127-2.
The editors and publishers attempt to publish accepted articles with all possible expediency. They therefore request that all authors pay close attention to the recommendations provided in the Instructions for Authors.
