About the journal
American Laboratory (journal format) is circulated to subscribers in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The subscribers are mainly analytical chemists, applied spectroscopists, and life scientists employed in industrial, government, and academic laboratories. Articles appearing in American Laboratory are submitted by scientists who are authorities in the field of laboratory instrumentation and focus on detailed applications of new and existing instrumentation. Articles are selected specifically to cover topics that are of current interest to readers and emphasize practical information, reporting advances in laboratory practice. American Laboratory contains supplemental sections specializing in Chromatography and Spectroscopy. Published 12 times a year.
Instructions to Authors
Please send the original and two additional copies of the text, figures, and illustrations to the Editor, American Laboratory, International Scientific Communications, Inc., 30 Controls Drive, P.O. Box 870, Shelton, CT 06484-0870, U.S.A. Assurance must be given that the manuscript has not been submitted for publication elsewhere.
Manuscripts must be typewritten double-spaced, one side only, on 8.5 ?11 in. white paper. Double-space all copy: text, references, footnotes, tables, and figure captions. Include the author's official title and affiliation. Leave wide margins.
Articles should be approximately 1500-2000 words in length (not including references and figure captions) with 4-6 inserts, which may be figures, tables, diagrams, etc. Articles should be written in Stand English following the usual style of scientific journals. Avoid the use of specialized jargon and explain the meaning of any technical abbreviations that may only be used within a specific field. Pay special attention to the selection of a title, which should describe the subject of the article concisely. For typographical reasons, all titles should be brief. Include a brief abstract and 5 - 10 key words.
Figure captions should be listed in order on a separate sheet. Figures should also be placed together, with the authors name and the figure number written in the margin of each illustration. Figures should be camera-ready, either black-and-white glossy prints, original line drawings, or color slides, prints, or transparencies. All lettering, numbering, and lines in illustrations should be clear and large enough to be legible after reduction. References should be listed in order at the end of the paper using standard journal abbreviations. Include key references only. All figures, references, and tables should be numbered consecutively and cited in numerical order in the text.
Authors are encouraged to submit articles on disk. Manuscripts may be submitted as either Microsoft?Word files or as text (ASCII) files on either PC or Macintosh operating systems. Figures may be submitted on disk provided they are in one of the following formats: TIFF or JPEG. For those working on a Macintosh platform, we accept text documents created in Quark Xpress, Microsoft?Word, Simple Text, as well as files saved as TEXT documents. We accept digital graphic files in the following cross-platform formats: Adobe PhotoShop, GIF (Graphic Interchange Format), JPEG (Joint Photographers Expert Group) and TIFF (Tagged Image File Format). Image resolution used on the ISC publications is 266 dpi. Do not compress image files. Do not embed photos within text documents. All cross-platform material should be submitted on 3.5-in. diskettes or on Iomega 100-MB ZIP cartridges. If you cannot submit your graphic files in any of these digital formats, you must send a photograph, slide, transparency, or camera-ready art to us. All submitted material (text and image) must be accompanied by hard copy. Use of computer disks saves time and expense in the production process and minimizes the number of errors introduced in the typesetting process. When submitting the final manuscript, include the disk with three hard copies of the manuscript. The version of the disk submitted should be the final accepted copy of the article that includes all the amendments or changes requested during the reviewing process. Disks should be labeled with the author's name, the short title of the article, the operating platform, and the word processing program including the version. Authors should note that when preparing an article with a word processing program, all design considerations for typefaces, page layout, and illustration positioning will be handled by the publisher. Please do not include any special typesetting/formatting codes. Use word processor codes only for the following attributes: boldface, italic, subscript, and superscript (no underlining or small caps). Rely on the word processors word-wrap to determine the length of lines in a paragraph. Use only hard returns created by pressing at the end of paragraphs. All levels of headings should have a line space above and below. If special characters are required (for example, Greek letters), please spell them out in letters. Tables should be presented as simply as possible, using the tabulation key to go forward from one column to another. Do not use the space bar to create columns in tables or use multiple insertions of the default decimal tabs. Please do not type the authors' names in capitals in the reference list. If there are any questions regarding the electronic submission of articles, authors may consult the Electronic Prepress Department at ISC, Inc. (tel.: 203-926-9300, fax: 203-926-9310) prior to submitting material to the Editor.
All articles will be edited to conform to American Laboratory style. Statements that, in our opinion, are contrary to the editorial objectives of the journal or that are of a purely promotional nature will be amended.
