The American Ceramic Society Bulletin provides the latest information on ceramic manufacturing, engineering and technology to its readers who are, primarily, ceramic engineers and materials scientists working in a variety of settings--industrial, government, academia, consulting.
The Bulletin Editors welcome the submission of short, practical, how-to manufacturing articles (750-1000 words maximum), as well as case histories describing how a specific company applied a particular concept or technique to its manufacturing process or business practices.
The Bulletin Editors also seek full manuscripts (3000 words maximum) that describe advances in manufacturing processes, ceramic materials and products, as well as testing and analysis.
The Editor of the Bulletin reserves the right to edit manuscripts and any accompanying illustrations to fit the Bulletin's style and format.
Instructions to Authors

MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION
- Electronic submission is preferred.
- Manuscript titles should be short, specific and clear. Abstracts are NOT required or necessary.
- Byline should include author(s) name(s), titles, company affiliation, city and state.
- If the article has been or is to be presented at a meeting, include, as a footnote, the name of the society or group, full name of the event, place and date of presentation.
- Do NOT reference figures and tables in the text. Since figures are not to be referenced in text, captions must be descriptive enough without duplicating information in the text. All captions should be submitted at the end of the text file.
- Tables should be submitted as a separate file (hard copy may be requested by the editor). Each table heading should be clear and concise. Experimental parameters in table titles should be footnoted.
- Charts and Graphs (use Arabic numbers to identify) require captions that describe, in three or four sentences, what is being shown and why it is being shown. Each graph or chart should be on a separate sheet–large and clear enough to read, including lettering.
- The use of metric units, specifically SI (modified), is preferred. Figures may remain in non-SI units, but a conversion factor for SI units must be included in the figure caption.
- References MUST BE cited in the text. Authors should submit a numbered list of references with the article. If there are less than 10 references, they will be published at the end of the article. If the number of references exceeds 10, references will not be published but will be available as a Data Depository file online or from the Bulletin's editors.
Each source should include title of paper, author, publication, volume and issue number, date of publication, and, if from a book, the title and author(s)/or editor(s).
PREPARATION of ELECTRONIC TEXT FILES
- Page design will be handled by the Publisher. DO NOT USE formatting commands such as centering, justifying text, indenting, etc.
- USE the word processor's facilities to indicate these text attributes: underline, italic, subscript, superscript, strikeout.
- DO NOT USE the hyphenation facilities.
- When preparing tables, USE tabs, not spaces, to align columns.
- When using symbols to denote special characters, please supply a list of all codes used.
- USE hard returns (using the enter key) only at the end of paragraphs.
- It is essential that the hard copy is produced directly from the submitted electronic version.
- DO NOT USE your own macros.
DELIVERY of ELECTRONIC FILES
- Text should be submitted as an E-mail attachment or on a 3.5-in. IBM diskette in Microsoft Word (Windows).
- Disk must be clearly marked with the following information:
- Operating system
- Disk format (e.g., DS/DD)
- Word Processor used, including version number
- Author's names
- Short title of article
- A hard copy of the final version of the manuscript should be submitted with the disk. This hard copy will be considered as the definitive version.
PREPARATION of ELECTRONIC GRAPHIC FILES
Ideally, illustrations should be produced in the Macintosh environment using the following software: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Freehand, QuarkXpress. However, we will accept any of the popular drawing programs for the Macintosh and PC in a Tiff or eps. format file. Illustrations must be at least 30 picas (5 inches or 12.7 cm) wide and submitted on either a 3.5 in. floppy, 100 meg ZIP disk or a 1 gig JAZ disk, or attached as individual files to an E-mail to the editor.
When submitting a diskette:
- Indicate format, operating system, program and version number of the software used. If possible, print a directory of filenames.
- Electronic images should be submitted in Tiff or eps. format and as a separate file. If the image is 4-color, include a machine or cromalin proof, and check that all the separations (if provided) are color identified. If the image is black & white, include a laser proof.
- Scanned artwork should be saved to Tiff or eps. format for both line and half-tone and scanned at a suggested setting of 400 dpi for half-tones and 1000 dpi for linework. If it is necessary to compress the scans, indicate the software used. It is essential that a hard copy of the scans be included. Please send a laser print of the artwork with the electronic file.
- Artwork should be drawn for finished size using a Times or Helvetica typeface at a final size of 8-pt type with appropriate line weights.
PUBLICATION POLICY Manuscripts are reviewed with the understanding that they are original, unpublished works and are not being considered for publication elsewhere. Exceptions to this policy will be on a case-by-case basis. Upon acceptance and a completed copyright transfer form, manuscripts become the property of the American Ceramic Society Bulletin and may not be published elsewhere without written permission. Authors retain the right to prepare derivative works or to revise, adapt or orally present the information contained in the article.
