About the journal

Alcohol will publish original reports in English of new and systematic studies in the various fields of alcohol research. All aspects of alcohol's biological action will be covered, including anatomy, biochemistry, cell biology, physiology, pharmacology, toxicology, behavior, social anthropology, and clinical problems. Of immense value to both practitioners and basic scientists, Alcohol is the major international journal devoted solely to biomedical research on alcohol and alcoholism.

Appearing nine times per year, the journal is dedicated to excellence and in-depth reporting of the burgeoning literature on alcoholism as a disease state. Topics include, but are not limited to, biomedical factors in the etiology of alcoholism; biomedical factors in the pathologic effects of uncontrolled drinking; biological and biochemical markers in the identification of alcoholism; new drugs and chemotherapeutic strategies in the treatment of uncontrolled drinking; alcohol withdrawal; and psychological and biological problems associated with fetal alcohol syndrome.

Alcohol features original research articles, review articles, theoretical articles, brief communications, and rapid communications. Brief communications should describe a new method, technique, or apparatus or present the results of experiments that can be reported briefly with a minimal number of figures and tables. Rapid communications should be original and of high quality and should not exceed four printed pages in length. A limited number of pertinent literature reviews and theoretical articles, results of symposia, abstracts and/or proceedings of meetings, and more comprehensive studies may also be published as special issues of or supplements to the journal.

All special issues and supplements are subject to our standard peer-review procedure and final approval by the Editors.

The Farmington Consensus

Alcohol subscribes to the tenets of The Farmington Consensus, which is published in its entirety in Volume 19 Issue 3 and on the Alcohol Web site. Submission of a paper to the journal will be taken as evidence that the authors have complied with the tenets set forth in the Consensus, as well as with certain portions of the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. When articles are submitted, a written statement must be included indicating that each listed author has contributed substantially to the work and concurs with the submission. This implies that a copy of the final manuscript has been approved by all authors and tacitly and explicitly by the responsible authorities in the laboratories where the work was carried out. Authors must also assure the journal in a written statement that there is no known conflict of interest. If authors have any questions concerning a possible conflict of interest, they should consult the Editor-in-Chief before submission. Authors must reveal explicitly in the manuscript all funding sources that enabled the studies to be conducted and the manuscript prepared, as well as that the study was conducted with the appropriate ethical safeguards regarding human and animal rights. Submission of a manuscript to Alcohol is also understood to imply that it has not been published previously and that it is not being published elsewhere, including in electronic form. If accepted, the manuscript shall not be published elsewhere in the same form or electronically, in either the same or another language, without the consent of the Editor-in-Chief and Publisher. Authors should be aware that the journal has defined policies for response to attempted or actual instances of duplicate publication, plagiarism, or scientific fraud.

Instructions to Authors

Authors who wish to submit manuscripts for publication in Alcohol are to adhere to the Instructions to Authors, as well as to complete and submit with their contribution the Author Checklist. Detailed guidance on manuscript preparation and submission is provided within the Instructions to Authors and Author Checklist.

Authors also will be held responsible for and must observe the tenets of two documents: The Farmington Consensus and certain portions of the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. How these tenets relate to authors? contributions is explained in the Instructions to Authors, and authors affirm their adherence to these tenets through the Author Checklist.

As a service to authors, the required guides and documents described above are available for review and use through the following mechanisms:

In addition, as a service to authors, a blank and adaptable Permissions Form (PDF) is available here on the Alcohol Web site, as well as on request from the editorial office. Authors can use this form in seeking permission to reprint previously published material in their contribution.

For a full explanation of the transition to the revised Instructions to Authors and new Author Checklist for Alcohol, as well as of the role of The Farmington Consensus and certain portions of the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals in contributions to Alcohol, please refer to the Editorial published in Alcohol 19 (3), 1999.

Once a manuscript has been accepted for publication and is in production at Elsevier Science, authors can monitor the status of their manuscript. This is available online through Manuscript Status.
