Call for Papers
For a special issue on BENCHMARKING IN AVIATION 003 marks the 100th anniversary of the first heavier than air controlled, powered flight by the Wright Brothers. Since then the aviation business has changed beyond all recognition and in doing so has shrunk the globe and profoundly affected global business and the way we live. The continuing speed of change and rapid growth have resulted in a complex array of challenges for managers including: increasing congestion of infrastructure, safety, sustainability, environmental and social opposition to aircraft operations, airport and air traffic privatization and commercialization, alliances and mergers between airlines, deregulation of markets, the operation of new larger aircraft, and the continued rise of low cost carriers. Such pressures have led many managers, planners and regulators to use Benchmarking to measure and manage performance. The main players will depend heavily on inter organisational learning if they are to meet the challenges of a market forecast to double over the next 15 years.
Papers are invited for a special issue of the Benchmarking - An International Journal (BIJ) on 'Benchmarking in Aviation'. The aim of this special issue is to investigate how benchmarking can help organizations in the aviation sector to better understand and improve their performance. Theoretical and empirical papers are sought including surveys, and case studies focusing on the tools/techniques used and experiences of benchmarking activities. Contributed papers may deal with, but are not limited to, the following topics:
Benchmarking and regulation Impact of airline alliances on knowledge sharing Benchmarking of airline performance Airport benchmarking Benchmarking security in the air transport system Benchmarking and aviation system planning and management Benchmarking applications in safety of air transport Benchmarking of air traffic control Benchmarking applications in military aviation Enquiries and expressions of interest should be addressed to the Guest Editors. Manuscripts should be 3000-5000 words in length, single-spaced and in A4 Word format. All contributions are subjected to a double-blind review. There should be a separate title page giving the names and full addresses of the authors. Manuscripts, following the BIJ guidelines (http://www.emeraldinsight.com/bij.htm), should be sent as e-mail attachments to the guest editors by no later than 15 June 2003.
