Submissions and editorial correspondence
All submissions from the USA, Canada, Central and South America and the Caribbean should be addressed to the Regional Editor for the Americas. All submissions from Australia and New Zealand should be addressed to the Regional Editor for Australasia. All other submissions and communications, including letters and books for review, should be addressed to the Editor at the Head Office.

Ethical standards
Manuscripts are accepted on the understanding that they may be are subject to editorial revision. Submissions must be accompanied by a signed statement (available at http://www.addictionjournal.org/pdfs/ethical_statement.pdf) from all authors saying that: (a) the material has not been published in whole or in part elsewhere; (b) the paper is not currently being considered for publication elsewhere; (c) all authors have been personally and actively involved in substantive work leading to the report, and will hold themselves jointly and individually responsible for its content; (d) all relevant ethical safeguards have been met in relation to patient or subject protection, or animal experimentation. This statement must also declare sources of funding, direct or indirect, and any connection with the tobacco, alcohol or pharmaceutical industries. With regard to points (a) and (b): if data from the same study are reported in more than one publication, this should be stated in the manuscript and/or covering letter to the Editor, along with a clear explanation as to how the submitted manuscript differs, and copies of closely related manuscripts reporting these data should be enclosed. If at any stage during the handling of their submission, authors decide to withdraw it, we ask them to notify the Editor.
Length
We ask authors to be as concise as possible and will negotiate with you personally and sympathetically if we feel shortening would improve communication. Case reports are welcomed but should not be more than 6 pages long. Letters should not be more than 2 pages long.
Language
Addiction's expectation is that when the authors of a paper do not have English as a first language, they will have their text checked before submission. Addiction welcomes submissions from all parts of the world and may on occasion assist with language editing.
Submission and layout
Addiction welcomes submissions in either hard copy or electronic form. For hard-copy submissions, please send two paper copies plus a Word disk version. They should be typed on one side of the paper, double spaced, with margins of at least 25 mm. The first sheet should contain the title of the paper, a short title not exceeding 45 characters, a total page and word count, names of authors, the address where the work was carried out, and the full postal and email addresses of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and off-prints. Any Conflict of Interest declaration should be included on this page. The second sheet should contain only the title, names of authors and an abstract. Please state any sources of funding in the Acknowledgments section. The entire manuscript, including all references, tables, figures and any other material, should be numbered in one sequence from the title page onwards. Footnotes to the text should be avoided where possible.

Authors should also send two paper copies of their submission to the appropriate Regional office, together with their signed ethical statement and copyright form available at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/add_caf.pdf When sending a final, revised version of an accepted article, it is essential that the two hard copies exactly match the material on disk. Save all files on a standard 3.5 inch high-density disk. The final disk should be accompanied by a file description form available at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/fdf.pdf. We prefer to receive disks in Microsoft Word in a PC format, but can translate from most other common word-processing programs, as well as Macs. Please specify which program you have used. Do not save your files as 'text only' or 'read only'.
Abstract
In the case of research reports, abstracts should use the following headings: Aims, Design, Setting, Participants, Intervention (experimental trials only), Measurements, Findings and Conclusions. The findings should be clearly listed because it is these that will form the main basis for the editorial decision. Abstracts should normally be no more than 250 words long. Please include keywords.
References
The reference list should not be needlessly profligate and should include only items that are retrievable through standard bibliographic sources. Either the Harvard or the Vancouver reference system should be followed.
When following the Harvard system, references should be indicated in the typescript by giving the authors name, with the year of publication in parentheses, e.g. Smith (1984); if there are three authors Smith, Green & Jones (1984) on the first citation and Smith et al. (1984) subsequently; or if there are more than three authors Smith et al. (1984) throughout. If several papers from the same authors and from the same year are cited, (a), (b), (c), etc. should be put after the year of publication. References should be listed at the end of the paper in alphabetical order.
When following the Vancouver system, references should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in text, tables and legends using bracketed arabic numerals. References cited only in tables or in legends to figures should be numbered in accordance with a sequence established by the first mention in the text of the particular table or figure. Please include the references in the main text rather than embedding them as footnotes.
All authors should be included. Journal titles should not be abbreviated. Please include first and last pages of book chapters. Where foreign language papers or books are cited, the title in English needs to be included in brackets after the foreign language version. Examples are:

Illustrations
These should not be inserted in the text but each provided separately and numbered on the back with Figure numbers, title of paper and name of author. All photographs, graphs and diagrams should be referred to as Figures in the text and should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals (e.g. Fig. 3). A list of legends for the figures should be submitted on a separate sheet; legends should include keys to any symbols.
Colour illustrations
It is the policy of Addiction for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork.
Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. Electronic artwork
We would like to receive your artwork in electronic form. Please save vector graphics (e.g. line artwork) in Encapsulated Postscript format (EPS) and bitmap files (e.g. half-tones) in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). Ideally, vector graphics that have been saved in metafile (.WMF) or pict (.PCT) format should be embedded within the body of the text file. Avoid using tints if possible; if they are essential to the understanding of the figure, try to make them coarse. Always enclose a hard copy of digitally supplied figures. Detailed information on digital illustration standards is available on the Blackwell Publishing homepage at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/digill.asp.
Tables
These should be typed on separate sheets and should be cited in the text. Words or numerals should be repeated on successive lines - ditto or do should not be used. Tables should not be ruled.

Page proofs
Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file. The e-mail server must be able to accept attachments up to 4 MB in size. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following Web site:
www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available; in your absence, please arrange for a colleague to access your e-mail to retrieve the proofs.
Refereeing policy
Papers will normally be sent by the Regional Editor for review to an Assistant Editor, who will solicit referees reports and make a recommendation to the Regional Editor. The Regional Editor will make a decision on the paper and communicate this with the authors. The Regional Editor or the Assistant Editor may return a paper unrefereed if in their judgement it is not suitable for the Journal.
Copyright
It is a condition of publication that authors vest copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in the Society for the Study of Addiction to Alcohol and Other Drugs.
