About the journal
Acta Oto-Laryngologica presents original articles of basic research interest regarding clinical questions at hand, as well as clinical studies in the field of otorhinolaryngology and related subdisciplines.
Acta Oto-Laryngologica is published by a non-profit society of Swedish otolaryngologists.
The journal publishes original papers on basic research as well as clinical studies in the field of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery and related subdisciplines. The aim is not only to present clinical and research data but also to bridge the gap between clinical and basic science research, being an international journal for translational research in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery.
Review articles presenting state of the art for a selected topic, and containing an internationally representative bibliography are also published. Letters to the editor, Short communications, recent advances in Commercial technology and their clinical applicability, and well documented Clinical trials are also within the scope of Acta Oto-Laryngologica. Reviews of current books in the field of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery are also published.
Instructions to Authors
***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***
PREPARING FOR SUBMISSION Submitted manuscripts should be arranged according to the rules stated in "Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals" Ann Intern Med 1997; 126: 36-47, or JAMA 1997; 277: 927-34. The full document is available at www.icmje.org
When submitting a paper, the author should always make a full statement to the editor about all submissions and previous reports that might be regarded as redundant or duplicate publication of the same or very similar work.
Manuscripts estimated to exceed 8 printed pages, including figures and tables, are generally not accepted. However, longer manuscripts may be published as a Supplement and will also undergo regular peer review.
Page charges: The first 4 pages are free of charge. Additional pages at present incur a cost of USD 175 per page. The expense for colour photos (USD 750/page) must be borne by the author(s).
Conflict of interest and funding: Authors are responsible for recognising and disclosing financial and other conflicts of interest that might bias their work. They should acknowledge in the manuscript all financial support for the work and other financial or personal connections to the work.
Statistic validity: If statistical data are provided the authors are requested to submit an official statement issued by a certified statistician (with a proper affiliation) regarding the validity of methods used.
Ethics and consent: When reporting experiments on human subjects, indicate whether the procedures followed were in accordance with the ethical standards of the responsible committee on human experimentation and with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975, as revised in 1983. Do not use patients' names, initials, or hospital numbers, especially in illustrative material. Papers including animal experiments or clinical trials must be accompanied by an approval by the local ethics committee. Please give date of issue and registration number.
Identifying information should not be published in written descriptions, photographs, and pedigrees unless the information is essential for scientific purposes and the patient (or parent or guardian) gives written informed consent for publication. Informed consent for this purpose requires that the patient be shown the manuscript to be published.
SUBMISSION Electronic Manuscripts The editors encourage submissions on diskette to facilitate rapid accessibility of your work to the readers; two files, one of which should be blinded: the electronic files and the printouts must be identical. The diskette should be labelled with your name and the name of the computer platform and version of the word processing system you have used. Please use this simple guideline for preparing your electronic manuscript:
- Please be consistent. The same elements should be keyed in exactly the same way throughout the manuscript.
- Do not break words at the end of lines. Use a hyphen only to hyphenate compound words.
- Enter only one space after the full-stop at the end of a sentence.
- When emphasising words please use the italic feature of your word processor software.
- Do not justify your text; use a ragged right-hand margin.
- Use a double hyphen (--) to indicate a dash in text.
- Do not use the lowercase l for 1 (one) or the uppercase O for 0 (zero).
- The space bar should only be used as a word separator. Use TAB when identifying paragraphs or separating columns in tables.
Please observe that Taylor & Francis can receive files from any word processing system; however, styled Microsoft Word files are preferred.
Please keep illustrations as separate files. Taylor & Francis can handle various application formats.

Manuscript on paper Submit four copies of all material, including illustrations and tables; three of which should be blinded, i.e., names and affiliations of the authors and correspondents' address should be deleted.
Manuscript layout: Double-space the entire manuscript -- even the reference list -- and leave generous margins. Organise the paper: title page, abstract page, introduction, material and methods, results, discussion, acknowledgements, list of references and, after the last reference, title, name, and full address of corresponding author including e-mail address and fax number.
Begin each section, and figure and table legends, on separate sheets (title page = p. 1, abstract page = p. 2, etc.) and type the page number in the upper right-hand corner of each page. The title page of the non-blinded copy should include: 1) title of manuscript, 2) name of author(s), 3) name and address of department(s) and institu-tion(s), and 4) a 'running title' of no more than 50 characters.
Abstract: The abstract should be divided into four sections in the following order: Objectives, Method, Results, and Conclusion. Provide up to ten key words but please avoid words already used in the title.
References: The Vancouver system must be applied. No more than 25 references are accepted. Number the references consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in the text by arabic numerals (in parentheses). Papers accepted but not yet published should be designated as (in press). Information from papers in manuscript but not yet accepted should be cited in the text as "unpublished observation(s)" or "personal communication".

Illustrations: Submit unmounted illustrations in four sets, three of which should be blinded, i.e., names of the authors should be deleted. Half tone and colour photos should be professionally drawn or photographed but computer-drawn figures are also accepted provided they are of high quality. Photomicrographs must have internal scale markers, and symbols, arrows or letters should contrast with the background.
