Instructions to Authors
Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***
Manuscripts Manuscripts should be sent in triplicate together with an electronic file (see below) to: Acta Odontologica Scandinavica, Folke Lagerl鰂, Institute of Odontology, Karolinska Institutet, 4064, SE-14104, Huddinge, Sweden. Original research papers, review articles, letters, and short communications will be considered for publication.
Manuscripts must be submitted in final, fully corrected form on the express condition, stated in the covering letter, that it has not been published, simultaneously submitted, or already accepted for publication elsewhere. All authors must sign the covering letter. The manuscript shall be clearly printed on a high-quality printer, in American English, on one side of the paper only. Use double spacing throughout and margins of at least 3 cm. Begin each of the following sections on separate pages: title page, abstract and key words, text, acknowledgements, references, individual tables, and figure legends. Number the pages consecutively beginning with the title page. The text should normally be divided into: Introduction, Materials and methods, Results, and Discussion. Use a clear system of headings to divide up and clarify the text, with not more than three grades.
The author must warrant that whenever appropriate, any patient or participant mentioned in the text or shown in a photograph has given informed consent to publication of such material. When informed consent has been obtained, it should be indicated in the published article.
Please use these simple guidelines when preparing your electronic manuscript:
- Please be consistent.
- The same elements should be keyed in exactly the same way throughout the manuscript.
- Do not break words at the end of lines.
- Use a hyphen only to hyphenate compound words.
- Enter only one space after the full stop at the end of a sentence.
- When emphasizing words, please use the italic feature of your word processor software.
- Do not justify your text; use a ragged right-hand margin.
- Use a double hyphen (--) to indicate a dash in text.
- Do not use the lowercase l for 1 (one) or the uppercase O for 0 (zero).
- The space bar should only be used as a word separator.
- Use TAB when indenting paragraphs or separating columns in tables.
Title page: The title page shall contain: 1) The title of the article, which should be concise but informative. Subtitles may be used if necessary, but must be short. 2) A short title not exceeding 40 letters and spaces for use as a running headline. 3) The full name of each author. 4) The departments and institutions to which the work should be attributed, including the city and country.
Abstract and key words: A short abstract should be presented on the second page. Since most databases truncate abstracts longer than 250 words, this is the absolute limit in length. The abstract should state briefly the object of the investigation, basic procedures, main findings, and principal conclusions. Only standard abbreviations should be used. Not more than five key words should be inserted in alphabetical order after the abstract. Use terms from the Medical Subject Headings list from Index Medicus whenever possible and do not repeat words in the article title. The name and current address of the author(s) to whom correspondence, proofs, and offprints are to be addressed must be typed below the key words. Include phone and fax numbers and, if available, e-mail address.
Tables: Type each table, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. Do not submit tables as photographs. Number tables consecutively with arabic numerals and give each a short descriptive heading. Give each column a short or abbreviated heading. Place explanatory matter in footnotes to the table, not in the heading. Explain in the footnotes all non-standard abbreviations used in the table. For footnotes, use the following symbols in this sequence: Omit internal vertical rules (lines). If data from another published or unpublished source are used, obtain permission and acknowledge fully. A table shall as far as possible be self-explanatory and understandable without reference to the text of the article.
Figures: All illustrations are to be considered figures. Figures should be submitted in triplicate and numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. Letters, numbers, and symbols must be clear, in proportion to each other, and large enough to be legible when reduced for publication.
The author should refer to the journal and decide whether a figure is to cover, one, one-and-a-half, or two columns of the journal when printed and then plan the figure accordingly. Photographs should be submitted as near to their printed size as possible. If magnification is significant, indicate it by a bar on the print, not by a magnification factor in the figure legend. Line drawings should be drawn in India ink or printed on a high-quality printer on appropriate paper. They should be drawn in proportion to each other, so that letters, numbers, and symbols in different figures will be the same size after reduction. Use sans-serif fonts for lettering the axes, and only capitalize the first letter. Do not attempt to hand-letter line drawings and photographs.
All figures should have a label pasted on the back indicating the number of the figure, the name(s) of the author(s), and the top. Do not write directly on the backs of photographs or damage them by using paper clips. Pack them so that they will not be bent or damaged in the post. If photographs of persons are used, either the subjects must not be identifiable, or written permission to use the photographs must accompany the manuscript.
Each figure should have a legend containing sufficient information to make the figure intelligible without reference to the text. All the legends must be typed together, double-spaced, on a separate sheet(s). If a figure has been published previously, acknowledge the original source and submit written permission from the copyright holder to reproduce it.
Color figures must be submitted as color negatives or positive transparencies and, when necessary, accompanied by drawings marked to indicate the region to be reproduced. The authors will be charged for the extra cost of color illustrations. Grants to cover part of this cost may be given by the Foundation on application to the Editor.
Acknowledgements: Acknowledge only persons who have made substantive contributions to the study. Authors are responsible for obtaining written permission from everyone acknowledged by name because readers may infer their endorsement of the data and conclusions. The source of financial support should be acknowledged here.
References: The list of references shall be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet(s), and the references shall be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. The reference list will therefore not be in alphabetical order. The reference list must include all authors referred to in the text, and in the tables or legends. The accuracy of the reference list must be verified before the manuscript is submitted for publication. Identify references in the text, tables, and legends by Arabic numerals in parentheses. In the text, references shall be made by giving the name of the author followed by the appropriate number in parentheses, e.g. 慔ansen (1) has reported...? 慔ansen & Olsen (2) have reported...? or by simply giving the appropriate number in parentheses, e.g. 慉s has recently been reported (1, 2) ..? When there are three or more authors, in the text only the name of the first author shall be given, followed by 慹t al.? The reference list should follow the style set forth in Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. The names of journals should be abbreviated in accordance with the style used in Index Medicus. Some examples follow:
- Troedson M, Derand T. Photoelastic experiments on facings laminated to teeth. Acta Odontol Scand 1995;53:270-4.
- Lund JP, Sessle BJ. Neurophysiolgical mechanisms. In: Zarb GA, Carlsson GE, Sessle BJ, Mohl ND, editors. Temporomandibular joint and masticatory muscle disorders. 2nd ed. Copenhagen: Munksgaard; 1994. p. 188-203.
Abbreviations: Use standard abbreviations. The following source may be consulted: Scientific style and format. The CBE manual for authors, editors, and publishers. 6th ed. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press; 1994. Any non-standard abbreviations (to be avoided if possible) should be explained in the text the first time they are used. Avoid abbreviations in the title. Quantities and units should be expressed in accordance with the recommendations of the Syst閙e International d'Unit閟 (SI). Tooth designations should be in accordance with the two-digit system (ISO 3950-1977).
Proofs and offprints One set of proofs will be sent to the authors concerned. It should be returned duly corrected with the least possible delay. Printer抯 errors should be marked in red, and other alterations in blue. Authors will be liable to pay for any alterations not due to printer抯 errors which they make. Offprints can be ordered by filling out the form accompanying the proofs. Authors will be charged NOK 600 for each printed page in excess of four pages.
Electronic manuscripts When a new or revised manuscript is submitted to the Editor, it must be accompanied by a diskette containing an electronic file identical to the manuscript. The diskette should be labeled with the author抯 name and the name of the computer platform and version of the word processing system used. Styled Microsoft Word files in PC format are preferred. For the final version Taylor & Francis can receive files from any word processing system. Graphic elements should be kept as separate files in EPS or TIFF format. Halftones and color photos should be included separately. For further information and support, please contact us by e-mail at post@tandf.no.
