About the journal

'Acta Haematologica' is a well established and internationally recognized journal featuring balanced, wide-ranging coverage of current hematology research. A wealth of information on such problems as anemia, leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, hereditary disorders, blood coagulation, growth factors, hematopoiesis and differentiation is contained in first-rate basic and clinical papers. In particular, the journal has established itself as a special platform for noteworthy case reports of practical value to the clinical hematologist. These are supplemented by short state-ofthe-art communications, reviews and correspondence as well as occasional special issues devoted to 'hot topics' in hematology.

Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate (with three sets of illustrations of which one is an original), typewritten double-spaced on one side of the paper, with a wide margin.

Conditions

All manuscripts are subject to editorial review. Manuscripts are received with the explicit understanding that they are not under simultaneous consideration by any other publication. Submission of an article for publication implies the transfer of the copyright from the author to the publisher upon acceptance. Accepted papers become the permanent property of 慉cta Haematologica?and may not be reproduced by any means, in whole or in part, without the written consent of the publisher. It is the author抯 responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce illustrations, tables, etc. from other publications.

Rapid Communication

Manuscripts intended for rapid communication must present new findings of sufficient importance to justify their accelerated acceptance. They should follow the general arrangement of research papers except that the separate sections should not be formally titled. They should not be more than three pages in length (including figures, tables and references). Proofs are checked by the Main Editor and not sent to the authors. Review will be rapid, and once accepted, the paper will be included in the next planned issue. If manuscripts require significant change after editing they will be treated as brief communications and returned to the authors for correction.

Brief Communication

The general arrangement for brief communications is the same as for research papers except that the manuscript is not divided into separate sections formally entitled introduction, methods, results, discussion. No abstract is required. These should not be more than 3 pages in length.

Letter to the Editor

Comments and responses to previously published articles and other short correspondences are welcome. They should be limited to 1 or 1 1/2 manuscript pages with a general arrangement as specified for Brief Communications.

Arrangement

Recommendation for Usage of Units and Abbreviations: The Editorial Board of 慉cta Haematologica’ supports the recommendations of the 慖nternational Committee for Standardization in Hematology?for using the SI (Système International d扷nités) equivalents in haematological literature. The standard abbreviations used for measurements of weight, length, volume, and time (i.e. mg, cm, ml, min) are used without definition. The abbreviations listed on the opposite page also require no definition. Please note that punctuation is not needed. When using other abbreviations, spell out the name in full at the first mention, and follow with the abbreviation in parentheses.

Title page: The first page of each paper should indicate the title, the authors?names, the institute where the work was conducted, and a short title for use as running head.

Full address: The exact postal address of the corresponding author complete with postal code must be given at the bottom of the title page. Please also supply phone and fax numbers, as well as e-mail address.

Key words: For indexing purposes, a list of 3–10 key words in English is essential.

Abstract: Each paper needs an abstract of up to 10 lines.

Footnotes: Avoid footnotes. When essential, they are numbered consecutively and typed at the foot of the appropriate page.

Tables and illustrations: Tables and illustrations (both numbered in Arabic numerals) should be prepared on separate sheets. Tables require a heading and figures a legend, also prepared on a separate sheet. For the reproduction of illustrations, only good drawings and original photographs can be accepted; negatives or photocopies cannot be used. Due to technical reasons, figures with a screen background should not be submitted. When possible, group several illustrations on one block for reproduction (max. size 180 x 223 mm) or provide crop marks. On the back of each illustration, indicate its number, the author抯 name, and 憈op?with a soft pencil. Electronically submitted b/w half-tone and color illustrations must have a final resolution of 300 dpi after scaling, line drawings one of 800-1200 dpi.

Color Illustrations

Up to 6 color illustrations per page can be integrated within the text at the special price of CHF 660.– / USD 545.00 per page. Color illustrations are reproduced at the author’s expense.

References

In the text identify references by Arabic numerals [in square brackets]. Material submitted for publication but not yet accepted should be noted as 憉npublished data?and not be included in the reference list. The list of references should include only those publications which are cited in the text. Do not alphabetize; number references in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. The surnames of the authors followed by initials should be given. There should be no punctuation other than a comma to separate the authors. Please cite all authors, 慹t al?is not sufficient. Abbreviate journal names according to the Index Medicus system. (Also see International Committee of Medical Journal Editors: Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals. N Engl J Med 1997;336:309?15.)

Digital Object Identifier (DOI)
S. Karger Publishers supports DOIs as unique identifiers for articles. A DOI number will be printed on the title page of each article. DOIs can be useful in the future for identifying and citing articles published online without volume or issue information. More information can be found at www.doi.org

Page Charges

Authors are charged CHF 138.– / USD 98.00 per printed page for the first 6 pages and CHF 275.– / USD 196.00 for each additional page, including tables, illustrations, and references. 1 printed page is equal to approximately 3 manuscript pages.

Galley Proofs

Unless indicated otherwise, galley proofs are sent to the first-named author and should be returned with the least possible delay. Alterations made in galley proofs, other than the correction of printer抯 errors, are charged to the author. No page proofs are supplied.

Reprints

Order forms and a price list are sent with the galley proofs. Orders submitted after the issue is printed are subject to considerably higher prices.
Guidelines for the Electronic Submission
of Manuscripts and Images

We welcome the electronic submission of manuscripts and illustrations.

Please note that you still have to send the required number of manuscript copies as stated in the 'Guidelines for Authors' of each journal, even though you submit your data electronically. This must also be observed with regard to illustrations, where originals/printout and copies are required.

The printout of your manuscript must be double-spaced and must match the file on disk exactly. In case of any discrepancies, we will consider the printed version as the final one.

Technical Information

Disk Submission

Please store only data pertinent to the manuscript you are submitting. It is advisable to include your fonts (Macintosh users need to include both screen and printer fonts).

Important: Do not save your paper with illustrations integrated! It is of crucial importance that you remember to store all illustration data separately.

For text only, use:

  • 3.5 inch disk
MS-Word format is preferred, Macintosh-OS format is acceptable
For text and illustrations, use:
  • 3.5 or 5.25 Magneto Optical Disc
  • CD-ROM (DOS or hybrid)
  • Iomega Zip/DOS (100 MB)
  • 44 MB, 88 MB or 200 MB SyQuest

Online Submission

We are currently evaluating online options.

Compressing / Stuffing

It may be appropriate to compress extensive data. Please use ZIP format, which you can download from www.pkware.com; Macintosh users should go to http://www.maczipit.com.

Data Description

Please always supply the following information with your data:
  • the title of the journal or book for which it is submitted
  • a short version of the paper's title
  • your name, postal and e-mail address, fax and telephone number
  • hard and software used, including the version
  • the complete list of the file names
All file names should consist of 8 characters before the dot identifying the file and 3 characters after the dot identifying the application (FILENAME.APP).

Text

Software

The preferred word-processing package is MS-Word. Other commonly used PC text programs as well as ASCII formats are accepted.

Revisions, Copy Editing

Please update your data when you revise subsequent to the reviewer's or editor's decision and mark revisions clearly as such.

All manuscripts accepted for publication by Karger are subject to copy editing. Changes introduced by the copy editor and / or questions will be marked in the manuscript/printout so please be sure to check the galleys against the manuscript.

The copy edited manuscript and your disk will be returned to you along with the galley proofs.

Do's and Don'ts

Apart from the general rules on style and arrangement as set out in the 'Guidelines for Authors' please note the following:
  • Please do not use any special page layout or worry about unsightly line and page breaks.
If you would like to see what your manuscript looks like with embedded tables and illustrations, remember that we need text and illustrations as separate files!
  • Enter your text continuously flush left. Do not use hard returns ('enter') within a paragraph, only at its end.
  • Do not justify.
  • Do not use footer and header functions.
  • Do not split words at the end of a line.
  • Do not use indentations anywhere in your manuscript, including the references. Mark the beginning of a paragraph by inserting an extra blank line. Use a hard return ('enter') to mark the end of a paragraph.
  • You may use the automatic page numbering function.
  • Headings should be arranged left. Do not center headings, space them or set them in uppercase.
  • Use the same style for headings of the same ranking throughout the text.
  • You may use boldface and italics as well as sub- and superscript where appropriate.
  • Use block letters (UPPERCASE) only for abbreviation. Do not s p a c e individual words for emphasis.
  • Insert one -- and only one -- space after each punctuation mark, e.g. at the end of a sentence and with reference numbers, i.e. [22, 27, 35].
  • Distinguish hyphen and dash as follows:
    hyphen high-resolution
    en-dash 1890--1990
em-dash the incident -- as responses showed -- was perceived...
minus sign at a temperature of --75?/TD>
  • Use your word-processing program to insert Greek letters and mathematical symbols etc.

Templates

In the near future we will be able to offer you user-friendly document templates for MS-Word Version 6.0 and higher.

Tables
  • Tables are part of the text. Place them at the end of the text file.
  • A table consists of heading, head and body and, if necessary, footnotes. Use a line to separate the individual parts.
  • Do not use spaces in tables, use the tabulator.
  • Within tables format operation data (e.g. 15.1 ?7.23) on one line in the same column.
  • Do not use boldface or screens in tables.

Illustrations

General Information

If your data does not correspond with the following guidelines it may be much more economical for us to use the original/print for traditional reproduction.

Always include originals/prints when submitting digital images in as many copies as indicated in the 'Guidelines to Authors'.

Important: Illustration data must be stored as separate files. Do not integrate your figures in your text.

Legends

The legends to your figures are part of the text and should be listed at the end of your text file.

Line Drawings
  • Use a common program to generate drawings: CorelDraw for Windows, Freehand and Illustrator for Macintosh.
  • When preparing your line drawing make sure the size of the drawing corresponds to its importance and complexity and that the size and weight of all elements are balanced.
  • Keep in mind that it may have to be scaled down: Do not use 'hairlines', minute type or very fine details. Screens should be used sparingly. Fine background screens are not recommended as they do not scale down well.
  • Please check all text elements very carefully to exclude typing errors and inconsistencies.
  • We prefer line drawings in a standard format (TIF, EPS, WMF etc.). If this is not possible export them in their original format and include as much information as possible on the program you used.
  • Save your line drawings as separate files, not embedded in the text.

Black and White Half-Tone Images
  • For processing and retouching scanned half-tone images, Photoshop is recommended.
Please save the original scan as well as your processed version.
  • Export black and white half-tones as TIF or EPS format, as close as possible to their anticipated size in print.
  • Save the half tones as separate files, not embedded in the text.

Color Illustrations
  • For processing and retouching scanned half-tone images, Photoshop is recommended.
Please save the original scan as well as your processed version.
  • Export black and white half-tones as TIF or EPS format, as close as possible to their anticipated size in print.
  • Save the half tones as separate files, not embedded in the text.

Scans
  • Scanned line drawings must be digitalized with a resolution of at least 800, better 1000 dpi (dots per inch) after scaling.
  • Scanned half-tone images should be digitalized with a final resolution of 300 dpi, a 12 bit grayscale accuracy and a density range of 2.8. Screen values must lie between 5% and 95%.
  • Scanned color illustrations must be digitalized in RGB mode with a resolution of at least 300 dpi, a 32 bit accuracy and a density range of 2.8.
  • Summary:
Original Scan mode Final resolution Format
Line drawing Line 800-1200 dpi TIF, EPS, WMF
Half-tone illustration Grayscale (12bit) 300 dpi TIF, EPS
Color illustration RGB (32 bit) 300 dpi TIF, EPS
Please make sure that your original has the resolution values in this table after scaling, otherwise the print quality will not be sufficient.
