About the journal

Acta Biotheoretica is devoted to the promotion of theoretical biology, encompassing mathematical biology and the philosophy of biology, paying special attention to the methodology of formation of biological theory.
Papers on all kind of biological theories are welcome. Interesting subjects include philosophy of biology, biomathematics, computational biology, genetics, ecology and morphology. The process of theory formation can be presented in verbal or mathematical form. Moreover, purely methodological papers can be devoted to the historical origins of the philosophy underlying biological theories and concepts.
Papers should contain clear statements of biological assumptions, and where applicable, a justification of their translation into mathematical form and a detailed discussion of the mathematical treatment. The connection to empirical data should be clarified.
Acta Biotheoretica also welcomes critical book reviews, short comments on previous papers and short notes directing attention to interesting new theoretical ideas.

Indexing/Abstracting Services

Acta Biotheoretica is indexed/abstracted in Biological Abstracts; BIOSIS Previews; CAB Abstracts; Current Contents/Agricultural, Biology & Environmental Sciences; Ecological Abstracts; Elsevier BIOBASE/Current Awareness in Biological Sciences; Geobase/Geo Abstracts; Index Medicus/MEDLINE; The ISI Alerting Services; PASCAL Database; Reference Update; Science Citation Index; Science Citation Index Expanded; Zoological Record

Instructions to Authors

Each year a volume will be published in four issues. Papers presented to Acta Biotheoretica must be written in English and should always be preceded by an abstract. This abstract must not exceed 200 words. It should give information on the scope of the paper, methods used, important findings and conclusions. It should stand on its own and not refer to the main text.

It is advisable to be as concise as possible and not to exceed 10,000 words. Original studies have preference, but review articles are certainly not excluded. Moreover, Acta Biotheoretica provides a section for original theoretical ideas. These ideas will be briefly refereed. The number of words should not exceed 1,000.

Manuscripts should be submitted in twofold, type-written, with double-spacing and ample margins. The original drawings of any illustrations, together with one set of photocopies must be included. Tables and explanations of figures should be given on separate sheets. For clarity, citations in the text and literature list are given in the examples below.

Complete manuscripts should be sent to:

The editor, Acta Biotheoretica
P.O. Box 9516
2300 RA Leiden
The Netherlands

It would be appreciated if authors could send an electronic copy of their manuscript on a disk, as it makes our work easier. Please, state which wordprocessing software (including version number) has been used; WordPerfect, MS-Word, Word or straight ASCII-files can be processed easily.

Reference style

In the text citations should be made in chronological order. Publications with three or more authors are referred to with the name of the first author followed by et al.. Where applicable, references to books should contain a page or chapter number.

For example:

(1) Joshi (et al., 1992) claim that (2) Growth trajectories of Venturia canescens in the final four stadia (Harvey et al., 1994) show (3) This problem is attacked with the method of singular perturbation (Britton, 1987, Ch. 8) (4) as is well-known (Lack, 1947; Parker and Courtney, 1984; Skinner, 1985; Charnov and Skinner, 1984, 1985, 1988).

In the reference list, authors should be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the paper. Names of journals must be given in full, without abbreviations. Please adhere to the following style:
