About the journal
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica An International Journal of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, Pain and Emergency Medicine The Official Journal of the Scandinavian Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica publishes papers on original work in anaesthesiology, intensive care and subjects related to their basic sciences, on condition that they are contributed exclusively to this Journal. Case reports and short communications may be considered for publication if of particular interest; also letters to the Editor, especially if related to already published material. The editorial board is free to discuss the publication of reviews on current topics, the choice of which, however, is the prerogative of the board. Every effort will be made by the Editors and selected experts to expedite a critical review of manuscripts in order to ensure rapid publication of papers of a high scientific standard.
Instructions to Authors

Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Editor-in-Chief Sven Erik Gisvold Department of Anaesthesia St Olav Hospital University Hospital of Trondheim N-7006 Trondheim Norway Tel. +47-73-868108 Fax +47-73-868117 sven.e.gisvold@medisin.ntnu.no
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica publishes original work in the fields of anaesthesia, intensive care, pain, and emergency medicine. This includes clinical or laboratory investigations, review articles, case reports and letters to the Editor. Manuscripts will be reviewed on the understanding that they have not been published, simultaneously submitted or accepted for publication elsewhere. It is expected that the work presented has been performed in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration and that necessary permission has been obtained from the appropriate ethics committee. Reports of investigations in animals will not be accepted for publication unless the text states that the study was approved by the appropriate animal investigation committee. Authorship and copyright. In accordance with "Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals" (British Medical Journal 1991: 302: 338-341), it is requested that all persons designated as authors should qualify for authorship. Each author should have participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for the content. By submitting the manuscript the authors automatically agree to assign exclusive copyright to the journal if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication. The work shall not be published elsewhere in any language without the written consent of the journal. The articles published in this journal are protected by copyright which covers translation rights and the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute all the articles printed in the journal. No material published in the journal may be stored on microfilm or videotape or in electronic databases and the like without the written permission of the journal. When the manuscript has been accepted for publication the corresponding author will receive a Copyright Assignment form from the Editorial Office to be returned signed on behalf of all co-authors. Please click Here to download the Copyright Assignment Form in a PDF format to print.
Manuscripts. Manuscripts should be prepared and submitted in accordance with: "Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals" (The Vancouver style), published in British Medical Journal 1991: 302:338-341. The manuscript should normally be divided into the following sections: a) The title page (pg. 1) with a concise and informative title, the names of the authors (last name, initials, no titles), the name and location of the institutions where the work was carried out, a short title of no more than 40 letters and spaces, and the name and address (including tel., fax. and e-mail address) of the author to whom correspondence should be addressed. b) Abstract and key-words (on a separate page, abstract not exceeding 250 words). Abstracts should be structured as follows: background, methods, results, conclusion. Each part of the abstract should start on a new line, indented two characters. c) Introduction (not headed) starts on the third page. d) Methods. Statistical methods should be presented at the end of this section. If unusual or complex statistical methods are used, an explanation should be included. e) Results. f) Discussion. g) Acknowledgements, if any. h) References.
Letters To The Editor - will be considered for publication. Letters should encourage scientific discussion on topics pertaining to anaesthesiology and intensive care, pain and emergency medicine. They should be addressed to the Editor, indicating that they are regarded as correspondence and not as original articles. Letters should be submitted in triplicate, including a computer diskette. They may contain 1-2 tables or figures and should not exceed 500 words. The editors reserve the right to edit letters for clarity and brevity.
Manuscript Submission. Manuscripts should if possible be sent on one newly formatted 3.5-inch floppy disk; 4 printed, double-spaced copies including figures and tables must accompany the disk. The paper manuscript and the file on the disk must be the same. Label the disk clearly with the journal name, author(s) and the title, file contents, computer system (DOS, Windows or Macintosh), word processor (Word, WordPerfect etc.) and version used. Please note that Microsoft Word is preferred. Do not convert your manuscript to ASCII format. Include only the files corresponding to the manuscript. Please include a working e-mail address for future correspondence.
E-mail Submissions. Manuscripts may also be e-mailed. Attach all documents as IBM-compatible (e.g. Word 5, Word 7, powerpoint) files. You must also include a return e-mail address and full postal address, telephone and fax number. Send it to either sven.e.gisvold@medisin.ntnu.no or Ann-Jorid.Gronli@medisin.ntnu.no. The cover letter with authentic signatures must be sent by regular mail.
Language. All papers will be published in English and must conform to accepted standards of English style and usage. British or American spelling may be used, but the same spelling should be used throughout the article.
Key words. Below the abstracts provide 3-10 key words or short phrases that will assist indexers in cross indexing the article. Use terms from the medical subject headings (MESH) list of Index Medicus. To avoid duplication, the key-words should be given in American spelling. See: Green N M. Keywords in anaesthesiology, 3rd edn. New York: Elsevier Science Publishing Company Inc., 1988.
References. Start the reference list with a new page. Keep the number of references low. Number references consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in text, tables, and legends by Arabic numbers in parentheses. Examples: 1. Journal articles Loft S, Jensen V, R鴕sgaard S, Dyrberg V. Influence of moderate alcohol intake on thiopental anaesthesia. Acta Anaesthesiol Scand 1982; 26: 22-6. 2. Books Taylor TH, Goldhill DR. Standards of care in anaesthesia. Oxford: Butterworth-Heinemann, 1992. 3. Chapter in a book Safar P. Resuscitation after brain ischemia. In: Grenvik A, Safar P, eds. Brain failure and resuscitation. New York: Churchill Livingstone Inc, 1981; 155-84.
Unpublished observations, written personal communications and manuscripts submitted but not accepted may not be used as references but may be referred to in the text (in parentheses) as unpublished observations. Manuscripts accepted but not yet published may be included in the references. The journal should then be designated, following by "in press" in parentheses.
Abbreviations and symbols. Extensive use of abbreviations is discouraged. Use only standardized terms which have been generally accepted. Any unfamiliar abbreviation must be defined when first used. Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica uses "Units, symbols, and abbreviations. A guide for biological and medical editors and authors", 1988, The Royal Society of Medicine, 1 Wimpole Street, London. With regard to drugs, generic names should normally be used instead of registered trademarks.
Nomenclature. Chemical, physical, and clinical units should always be strictly defined. Units of measurement should be expressed and written in accordance with the Syst鑝e Internationale d'Unit閟 (SI-units), except for blood pressures which should be expressed as mmhg.
Illustrations. Illustrations should be submitted as photographs with glossy enlargements showing good detail and contrast. Good, original laser-prints are also acceptable. Figures should be planned to fit the proportions of the printed page. Any lines, numbers or lettering should be large enough for the necessary reduction. Two sets of original photographs should be included. On the back of each illustration should be the name of the journal, the name of the first author, and the figure number as well as the title of the paper. All figures should have legends and these should be written on a separate sheet and numbered correspondingly. They should be written so that the general meaning of each illustration can be understood without reference to the text. When recognisable photographs of patients are submitted, written consent from the patient must be included. Coloured illustrations should be submitted as diapositives. It is the policy of Acta Anaesthesia Scandinavica for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF from the Internet. The web address for the form is: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/Upw3000_X_CoW.pdf If you are unable to access the internet, or are unable to download the form, please contact Ann-Jorid Gr鴑li at: ann-jorid.gronli@medisin.ntnu.no and they will be able to e-mail or FAX a from to you. Once completed, please return the form to the Production Editor at the address below:
Lorna Faith Blackwell Publishing 23 Ainslie Place Edinburgh EH3 6AJ Fax: +44 131 226 3803 mailto: lorna.faith@edn.blackwellpublishing.com
Any article received by Blackwell Publishing with colour work will not be published until the form has been returned.
Tables. Tables should be used to clarify important points and to present numerical data that are necessary for the understanding of the results. Avoid unnecessary double presentation of results (in figures and tables). Each table should be typed on a separate sheet. The table should have a heading including the table number and, a meaningful indication of the table content. Tables may also have an explanatory footnote if necessary. Please indicate in the margin of the manuscript approximately where the tables and figures should be presented.
Covering letter. Manuscripts must be accompanied by a covering letter signed by all co-authors. The letter should include information about prior or duplicate publication or submission elsewhere of any part of the work. It should also include a statement that the manuscript has been read and approved by all authors. In addition, the letter should contain any other information that may be helpful to the Editor.
Proofs. Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file. Only minor revisions are allowed without extra cost. Proofs must be returned to the publisher within 3 days.
Offprints. Offprints may be ordered on the offprint order form which will accompany the proofs.
Supplements. Monographs of large original work, proceedings of symposia, etc. may be published as supplements, the full cost being paid by the author. After acceptance, they are not subject to revision by the Editorial Board. The quality of language must meet the standards maintained by the journal, and all the above-mentioned instructions should be followed. All costs for production, postage to the subscribers, and translation or linguistic revision must be paid by the author. Supplements are sent free of charge to the subscribers.
