The journal publishes, in a strictly practice-oriented manner, scientific and technical contributions, short communications, discussion and position papers as well as other information on all aspects relevant to quality and reliability in chemical measurement. The journal gives special attention to border crossing and transnational problems and to problem solving for practitioners, e. g. accreditation practice and implementation of quality assurance schemes in all laboratories involved in chemical measurement. The journal also aims at providing an information forum for the exchange of views and to foster cooperation between all national and international bodies operating in the fields of accreditation, certification, validation, quality assurance and traceability.

The journal will focus on the following topics:
- accreditation
- certification
- ISO/IEC 17025
- ISO 9001:2000
- GLP/GMP
- quality assurance
- traceability
- measurement uncertainty
- validation
- calibration
- proficiency testing
- reference materials
- definitions
- quantities and units

Instructions to Authors

General
The content of submitted manuscripts must fall within the scope of the journal. Original papers and short communications will be evaluated by two referees. Other contributi-ons will be handled by the Editors-in-Chief
in cooperation with the Editorial Board, act-ing as peer reviewers if necessary. Papers are expected, as far as possible, to be comprehensible to both non-specialist readers and practitioners; papers should be as concise a possible without omitting necessary data. In the case of original contributions and short communications, authors must submit papers reporting original, unpublished work that is not being considered for publication elsewhere. All submitted papers must not infringe on the copyright of third parties. Manuscripts must be accompanied by the 揅opyright Transfer Statement?(the form is regularly published in this journal).

Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate and in English. Authors from countries outside Europe may submit just one copy of their papers.Language editing will be offered to all non-native speakers for original papers and short communications free of charge. Authors bear full responsibility for the content of their published papers, including any corrections made by the editors during the reviewing process. Authors will be advised separately how to handle the page proofs; in any case, the corrected proofs should be returned to the publisher without delay.
Offprints: One complimentary copy is supplied.Orders for offprints can be placed by returning the order form with the corrected proofs. When you order offprints, you are entitled to receive in addition a pdf file of your article for your own personal use.
Manuscript preparation
1. General layout of text: Papers should be typed with wide margins on A4 or quarto paper of adequate density. The text should be double spaced throughout, including references, figure legends, table captions, and footnotes. Words should not be underlined for emphasis. Appropriate typefaces will be assigned during the editing process. All typed pages must be numbered consecutively, beginning with the title page.
2. Length of contributions: Original papers should consist of no more than 15 manuscript pages (double spaced; including references, tables, and figures); other types of publication, e.g. on accreditation practice or legislation, should not exceed nine typewritten pages; short original communications must not exceed three typewritten pages (approx. 1200 words).
3. Placement of tables and figures: This should be indicated in angled brackets in the left-hand margin of the manuscript.
4. Footnotes: Footnotes to the text should be numbered consecutively. Footnotes to the tables should be marked by lower-case letters (except for statistical data, e.g. P values, which are indicated by asterisks).
5. Manuscripts in electronic form: In order to speed up publication, authors are invited to send the final revised version of their papers on diskette together with the hard-copy print out to the Editor. For instructions see: 揟ech-nical Instructions: Manuscripts and Illustrati-ons  in Electronic Form?published regularly in this journal.
6. Supplementary material
Authors may supply Supplementary material (e.g. figures, tables, text passages, sequences, sequence alignments) to be made electronic-ally available via the Springer server when the paper is published. Before inclusion on the server, the material will be checked by the referees. Authors that plan to submit such material will find the detailed instructions on the above server and in the issues.
7. Composition of papers
As a rule, manuscripts should contain the following: title page, abstract, introduction, main body of the paper, acknowledgements, references, tables (with titles), figure legends, figures.
The title page should contain: the name(s) of the author(s), with all first names written out; the institute(s) at which the work was carried out, with all author affiliations in-dicated;  the author to whom correspondence is to be sent; telephone, fax and e-mail numbers.
Abstract: Every original paper should be preceded by an abstract. The abstract should be suitable for direct publication in current awareness publications or information retrie-val systems, and should include the main points of the paper. ?Key words: A list of not more than 5 key words must also be included. These words should correspond to the main terms in the article/title. ?The Introduction should be clear and brief and should include the relevant references. In this section, the background and the nature of the subject matter should be presented. ?When describing experiments the methods by which the results were obtained must be clearly described; data should be given in ta-ble form and descriptions in telegraphic style. The same data should not be presented in both tables and figures. In general, SI units must be used whenever possible. Chemical formulae and names as well as the names of organisms must be unambiguous and in accordance with the relevant interna-tional recommendations, cf. 揑UPAC (1993) Quantities, Units and Symbols Trade. Black-well Scientific, Oxford?and 揑SO (1993) In-ternational Vocabulary of Basic and General Terms in Metrology? Geneva. Trade names should be avoided; abbreviations and un-common symbols should be explained at first mention.
Acknowledgements of financial support, technical assistance etc. may be given at the end of the main body of the paper. ?References must be numbered cons-ecutively as they are cited. Citations in the text should be by numbers in square brackets
[1] on the line of typing. Book titles are gi-ven, but titles of journal articles are not. Re-ferences should follow the examples below:
1. Smith JP, Bereton MP (1995) J Chem Soc 320:325?27
2. Determann G (1968) Gel chromatography, 2nd edn. Springer, Berlin Heidelberg New York
3. Brown FR, Jackson D (1987) Analytical chemistry. In: White FC, Red SA (eds) Modern chemistry. Springer, Berlin Heidelberg New York, pp 167?80 Tables (not screened) may be used to re-duce the amount of text or to make assimila-tion easier. They should be submitted on separate sheets and numbered consecutively throughout. Each table should have a brief title and, if necessary, short explanations may be given.  ?Figures (not screened) should also be sub-mitted on separate sheets. The same data should not be given in both tables and graphs. The figure legends should be presented together on a separate sheet. Line drawings are preferable to photographs. Photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Please submit high-quality glossy prints or figures of laser printer quality in the desired final size. Inscriptions should be clearly legible. As a rule, figures are reduced to the column width (8.6 cm). After reduction, the smallest type should be at least 2 mm high. Half-tone illustrations, if any, should be well contrasted and trimmed at right angles in the desired final size. Inscriptions should be about 3 mm high.
