About the journal

Scope and Aims

Scope: All aspects of pure and applied mycological research and news.

Aims: The flagship journal of the International Mycological Association. IMA Fungus is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access, full colour, fast-track journal. Papers on any aspect of mycology are considered, and published on-line with final pagination after proofs have been corrected; they are then effectively published under the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants. The journal strongly supports good practice policies, and requires voucher specimens or cultures to be deposited in a public collection with an online database, DNA sequences in GenBank, alignments in TreeBASE, and validating information on new scientific names, including typifications, to be lodged in MycoBank. News, meeting reports, personalia, research news, correspondence, book news, and information on forthcoming international meetings are included in each issue.

Ownership: International Mycological Association (IMA).

Editorial arrangements: Editor-in-Chief is appointed for a term of five years, and all Officers and elected members of the IMA Executive Committee will serve as Associate Editors during their terms of service (four years). This will ensure a subject and geographical spread.

Frequency: Hard copy printed twice per year (June and December).

Content: It is envisaged that the journal will have the following sections:

  • Editorial: Usually one per issue.
  • Society News: From the IMA regional groups, affiliated international mycological organizations, and member societies.
  • Mycological Research News: Highlighting exciting and very recent new mycological research reported elsewhere in the scientific literature.
  • Mycological Reflections: Commentaries and opinions.
  • Mycopersonalia: Brief obituaries for well-known international mycological figures, notes on achievements of persons receiving IMA Medals, etc.
  • Review Articles: By invitation, substantial and in-depth on topics of interest to a wide range of mycologists; and one at most per issue.
  • Original Articles: Unsolicited and encouraged, handled by the most pertinent Associate Editor, and, if the subject matter is considered of appropriately wide interest and ground-breaking, always peer-reviewed.
  • Mycological Meetings: Forthcoming international mycological congresses and workshops.
  • New Mycological Publications and Websites:  A mixture of detailed book reviews and briefer notices on works of interest to a broad spectrum of mycologists, also drawing attention to new websites and CD/DVDs.

    • font = arial capital regulair, size 12 pixels
    • thickness of white lines separating the pictures: 15 pixels

Please send the photoplate as a psd file with layers

What to sent together with the text:

    • pdf file with the complete plate as it must be published;
    • the file in psd or tiff with layers;
    • all separate pictures used in the plate as separate files without letters and scale bars.
Instructions for IMA GENOME-F [International Mycological Association Fungal Genome announcements]

IMA GENOME-F is a new addition to IMA Fungus.  The advent of inexpensive sequencing technologies now enables mycologists to quite literally sequence the genome of their favourite fungus.  This has resulted in an exponential increase in the number of fungal genomes which have been sequenced.  While some research groups have the resources to attempt extensive characterisation of these genomes many researchers either are unable to undertake such studies or have sequenced these fungal genomes with a very specific aim which  means that they have interrogated only a small portion of the genome.   IMA GENOME-F aims at providing researchers with a vehicle to announce the genome sequence of a particular fungal species.  In this way these genomes will be properly archived and available through standard literature searches.

These genome announcements are short, providing an explanation of the value of the genome sequence as well as details of the technology used to sequence the genome, the assembly that was performed as well as some summary statistics about the genome such as size, completeness, probable number of Open Reading frames and the number of contigs of the current assembly.  The genome coverage should be in the order of 20X and available to the scientific community.  We recommend that it should be submitted to a database such as NCBI.

  2. The corresponding author should confirm that: (a) all named authors have agreed to publication of the work; and (b) the manuscript does not infringe any personal or other copyright or property rights.
  3. Papers cited as “in press” should be provided for the benefit of the referees.
  4. The content should be structured as follows: ABSTRACT, INTRODUCTION, MATERIALS AND METHODS, RESULTS or TAXONOMIC PART, DISCUSSION, ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS and REFERENCES. Key words and a Running Head should also be provided.
  5. English-English is preferred, and used for all non-article material. Authors of articles can use American-English, provided that it is consistent within their contributions. Words of non-English origin, like bona fide, prima facie, in vitro, in situ, should be placed in italic, together with scientific names of any rank (e.g. Ascomycota, Dothideales, Mycosphaerellaceae, Mycosphaerella nubilosa).
  6. Common abbreviations are as follows: h, min, s, mL, µL, mg/L, °C, Fig., d, wk, but also ITS, RPD, RFLP, rDNA, 18S etc.
Authorities of fungal taxa should be omitted from the general text, unless novelties and synonymies are listed, or nomenclatural issues discussed. In these cases, authorities for taxa should follow the list of authors’ names, see http://www.ipni.org/index.html.
  7. Experimental procedures must be reproducible and must follow Good Cultural Practice (Mycological Research 106: 1378–1379), with sequences lodged at GenBank (ex-type identifiers added to culture-collection field or type identifiers to specimen-voucher field in the sequence record), alignments in TreeBase, voucher specimens in Leiden (L), or another recognized on-line herbarium (Index Herbariorum or World Directory of Collections and Cultures of Microorganisms acronym, with accession numbers where allocated, and accompanying ex-type and other cultures in long-term culture collections. For new taxa or names a MycoBank number is required (see www.MycoBank.org).
  8. Collections must be cited as:
Specimens examined. COUNTRY, location, substratum, date (e.g. 10 Dec. 1993), collector (e.g. S. Uper & F. Ungus) HERBARIUM number (acronym according to Index Herbariorum), holotype, culture ex-type COLLECTION xxx. (thus only country in small caps and specimen collector italics; everything else in roman type).
  9. Reference citation in text: References in the text should be chronological, and given in the following form: “Smith & Jones (1965) have shown ...”, or, “some authors (Zabetta 1928, Taylor & Palmer 1970, Zabetta 1970) consider that ...”. The names of collaborating authors are joined by an ampersand (&). Where there are three or more authors, names should be cited by the first name only, adding “et al.”, e.g. “Bowie, Black & White (1964)” are given as “Bowie et al. (1964)” or “(Bowie et al. 1964)”. Where authors have published more than one work in a year, to which reference is made, they should be distinguished by placing a, b, etc. immediately after the date, e.g. “Dylan (1965a, b)”. Reference citations in text should be in ascending order of year first, followed by authors’ names. Each reference should include the full title of the paper and journal, volume number, and the final as well as the first page number. In the case of chapters in books, the names of editors, first and last page numbers of the articles, publisher and place of publication are needed.
    Examples:
Black JA, Taylor JE (1999a) Article title. Studies in Mycology 13: 1–10.
Black JA, Taylor JE (In press) Article title. Fungal Biology.
Black JA, Taylor JE, White DA (1981) Article title. In: Book title. (KA Seifert, W Jones & P. Jones, eds): 11–30. Press, Country.
