About the journal

Pediatric Physical Therapy is the first and only peer-reviewed journal devoted to this discipline. The Journal provides a forum for scientific and professional exchange among researchers and practitioners throughout the world that represent subspecialties of the discipline, including early intervention, neonatology, pediatric sports and fitness, school physical therapy, acute care for seriously ill children, and the prevention of primary and secondary conditions that lead to disabling conditions.
Official Journal of the Section on Pediatrics of the American Physical Therapy Association, The Dutch Association for Pediatric Physical Therapy, Physiotherapia Paediatrica, The New Zealand Society of Physiotherapists Pediatric Special Interest Group, and The Pediatric Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.
Scope Pediatric Physical Therapy is an indexed international journal, that publishes peer reviewed research related to the practice of physical therapy for children with movement disorders. The editorial board is comprised of an international panel of researchers and clinical scholars that oversees a rigorous peer review process. The journal serves as the official journal for the pediatric physical therapy professional organizations in the Netherlands, Switzerland, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States. The journal includes articles that support evidenced based practice of physical therapy for children with neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory and developmental conditions that lead to disorders of movement, and research reports that contribute to the foundational sciences of pediatric physical therapy, ranging from biomechanics and pediatric exercise science to neurodevelopmental science. To these ends the journal publishes original research articles, systematic reviews directed to specific clinical questions that further the science of physical therapy, clinical guidelines and case reports that describe unusual conditions or cutting edge interventions with sound rationale. The journal adheres to the ethical standards of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors.
Unique Features Pediatric Physical Therapy is the first and only journal devoted exclusively to pediatric physical therapy. It provides a forum for scientific and professional exchange among researchers and practitioners throughout the world that represent subspecialties of the discipline, including early intervention, neonatology, pediatric sports and fitness, school physical therapy, acute care for seriously ill children, and the prevention of primary and secondary conditions that lead to disabling conditions. The international review panel is deeply committed to high standards and rigor in the peer review process with an eye toward providing feedback that would strengthen the authors’ reports. The increasing number of submissions from around the world enables a rich exchange of information from both developed and developing countries. The journal provides a range of supplemental digital materials such as video and audio podcasts, and is committed to providing high quality translations that would broaden the reach of the journal. Digital materials are formatted for use on personal digital devices, allowing clinicians to access research information in daily practice.
Instructions to Authors
Pediatric Physical Therapy is the official journal of the Section on Pediatrics of the American Physical Therapy Association which advances the science and practice of pediatric physical therapy. It publishes relevant research and clinical reports which document the contemporary clinical practice of pediatric physical therapy. Manuscripts may come from any country, but they must be in English. Each article is subjected to double blinded peer review. The Editor will assist authors whenever necessary to make manuscripts acceptable for publication. The Editor reserves the right to make literary corrections.
Articles are received with the understanding that the manuscript is an original work that has neither been previously published nor is under consideration by another publication. The Editorial Board adheres to the “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts (URM) Submitted to Biomedical Journals” available at the website of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE): http://www.icmje.org.
COVER LETTER The Editor must receive a cover letter that indicates that the work is original, has not been published, nor under review by any other journal. The cover letter should also include a statement addressing conflict of interest.
COPYRIGHT Copyright of published manuscripts will be held by Lippincott Williams and Wilkins and the Section on Pediatrics of the American Physical Therapy Association. All authors must sign and submit a copy of the Journal’s Copyright Release Form when the manuscript is submitted. The copyright form can be found on the journal’s Editorial Manager website in the list of resource files.
CONFLICTS OF INTEREST Authors must state all possible conflicts of interest in the Title Page of the manuscript, including financial, consultant, institutional and other relationships that might lead to bias or a conflict of interest. If there is no conflict of interest, this should also be explicitly stated as none declared. All sources of funding should be acknowledged in the Title Page of the manuscript. All relevant conflicts of interest and sources of funding should be included on the title page of the manuscript with the heading “Conflicts of Interest and Source of Funding:”.
For example: Conflicts of Interest and Source of Funding: A has received honoraria from Company Z. B is currently receiving a grant (#12345) from Organization Y, and is on the speaker’s bureau for Organization X – the CME organizers for Company A. For the remaining authors none were declared.
In addition, each author must complete and submit the journal’s copyright transfer agreement, which includes a section on the disclosure of potential conflicts of interest based on the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals.”
- Each author must download the form in PDF format, complete the form electronically and provide to the lead author for submission to the PED PT Editorial Manager site.
- All author forms must be completed by the time of revised manuscript submission.
- Each author will be expected to complete and sign the copyright transfer agreement form electronically. For help or more information about electronically signing this form, visit our online FAQs.
All manuscripts must be submitted on-line through the journal’s web site at http://ped-pt.edmgr.com/. See submission instructions below in the section entitled “ON-LINE MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION.”
PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS Authors should consult the latest edition of the American Medical Association (AMA) Manual of Style, available from Oxford University Press (www.oup.com). The manual includes details of acceptable style and format, and specifics related to the preparation of manuscripts. It is the author’s responsibility to prepare the manuscript according to AMA style.
Manuscripts should be prepared using a word processing program; Microsoft Word is preferred. Pages should be formatted for 8 ½ by 11 inch pages and have 1-inch margins on the sides, top and bottom. Double-space every line.
When submitting materials online, you will be required to upload a number of files including: a cover letter; a title page with acknowledgments (optional); the text of the manuscript along with references; and a separate file for each figure and table.
Pages in the manuscript file must be numbered consecutively, beginning with the first page of the text. Each figure (photo, line drawing or chart) and each table should be saved as a separate file. Number each of the tables in the order in which they appear in the manuscript text. For example, table 1, table 2, etc and do the same for the figure files (figure 1, figure 2, etc).
Blinded Copies For purposes of more objective reviewing, do not include any identifying information within the manuscript file or the tables and figures. The author's name should not appear in this file, nor should the location where the study obtained subjects or received review for ethical treatment of human subjects. Carefully review the manuscript for references to the locations where subjects were recruited, data collected or human subjects approval was granted, and black out this identifying information in the text. Manuscripts submitted that contain identifying information will be returned to the author for blinding. Acknowledgments should be placed in the title page file, on a separate page, following the title page, as specified below.
ORGANIZATION OF MANUSCRIPTS Title Page The title page should include the title of the manuscript, author name(s), and professional affiliation of each author, including the department, institution, city, state and country of origin. In addition, the title page must contain a conflict of interest statement. The statement “The author(s) declares no conflict of interest,” should appear just after the list of author affiliations.
A section titled "Correspondence:" should follow that includes the corresponding author’s name, surface-mail address and email address. Do not include telephone or fax numbers.
If the author received funding for the work reported in the manuscript. This should be noted in a section titled: "Grant support:” and should state the source of funding, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH); Wellcome Trust; Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI); etc.
Finally a note should be included if the work was completed while one or more of the authors were students in training. This should include the name of the individual who completed the work as a student, the degree sought and the institution awarding the degree, including city, state and country.
An example of the title page format can be found here.
On a separate page within the title page file, please include any acknowledgments that should appear with the manuscript. Including acknowledgments is optional, but may include a list of contributors to the study, who are not eligible for authorship as delineated by the ICMJE, or expressions of appreciation to individuals who contributed in some way to the conduct of the study. Title these comments “Acknowledgments.” Please note that the acknowledgment of grant support should be included on the title page of the manuscript not within the acknowledgment section.
Please save the title page and acknowledgments as one file. This file will be submitted as the title page file when uploading your materials into Editorial Manager.
Abstract The abstract should be written in 150 words or less. Abstracts for research papers should include headings indicating Purpose, Methods, Results and Conclusions. Abstracts for other types of manuscripts should include Purpose, Summary of Key Points, a Statement of Conclusions and Recommendations for Clinical Practice. Do not include the abstract within the manuscript file. The abstract can be saved as a separate file and copied and pasted into the abstract window when uploading your materials into Editorial Manager.
Video Abstract After an article has been Accepted for Publication, authors can prepare a Video Abstract and submit this digital file along with the final draft of the manuscript. Guidelines for preparation of the Video Abstract, along with links to sample Video Abstracts, can be found here – http://journals.lww.com/pedpt/Documents/LWW_Toolkit_-_How_to_Create_a_Video_Abstract.pdf.
Text The main text should be 15 pages or less using a 12 point font. Double-space the manuscript and number all pages. The 15 page limit does not include the title page, the abstract, references, tables, figures, figure legends, or appendices.
No identifying information should be included in the text file. Please remove all references to the names of any institutions or location of the study. The name of the institution granting human subject approval should be obscured. Do not use authors’ initials to indicate who may have carried out parts of the study. When making reference to past work or publications please obscure the complete citation within the reference list as you must assure that the blinded reviewer cannot discern the author. Alternatively, you may make reference to your prior work but do not identify it as your own work, rather cite this work as though the author was someone other than yourself.
ORGANIZE THE TEXT USING SIDE HEADINGS For research reports include Introduction and Purpose, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusions. The introduction and purpose portion of the manuscript should end with a very clear purpose statement that prepares the reader for the focus of the study. The method section follows and should start with a brief description of the study design, followed by a description of the subjects of the study. The tests and measures, or instruments used to collect data should be delineated, and their reliability reported. The data should be presented in the results section, without interpretation. Interpretation of the data should then be included in the discussion section of the paper. The discussion should be limited to salient points directly related to the data collected, and results obtained. The clinical implications of the findings should be clearly addressed. Recommendation for future study should be specific and salient, addressing ways to strengthen the research conducted to date. The conclusion should be a statement that generalizes the results obtained from the sample studied to the population that was focus of the study. The conclusion should not include a restatement or summary of the results.
For case reports include Introduction, Description of the Case, Description of Intervention, Description of Outcomes, and Discussion. Authors are advised to consult the work of McEwen (Ed., Writing Case Reports a How-To Manual for Clinicians. Alexandria, VA: American Physical Therapy Association; 1996) in preparing the case report.
Review manuscripts are accepted if they are prepared as systematic reviews. These should include Introduction and Purpose, Method Used to Conduct the Review including documentation of the databases, search terms and procedures used to conduct the search. The PRISMA statement (Centre for Reviews and Dissemination, University of York. PRISMA Statement. http://www.prisma-statement.org/ Accessed July 29, 2011) should serve as a guide for preparing the systematic review. Inclusion and exclusion criteria for studies included in the review should be stated. And the method of judging study rigor should be described. The report of the review should also include Results, Conclusions and Implications for Research and Clinical Practice.
Critically Appraised Topic (CAT) submissions are welcomed. A CAT is a standardized, one page summary and critical appraisal of research evidence organized to answer a clinical question. The CAT is one written format for sharing information related to evidence-based practice. The framework for preparing these submissions is delineated here.
Perspectives manuscripts provide information that is both scholarly and visionary in its approach. Typically perspective papers are written by individuals with acknowledged expertise in the area in which the perspective is written.
Individuals interested in submitting a manuscript that does not fit within the framework of those described above should contact the Editor.
References Following AMA Style, indicate references by superscripts, numbered consecutively in the text, the tables, and figure legends. When inserting reference numbers remember that the reference number appears after periods and commas, but before colons and semicolons. Manuscripts not conforming to this style will be returned to the author for correction prior to review. The reference list itself should be numbered to match the consecutive appearance of citations within the text. Materials not cited within the text of the manuscript, tables or figures should not be included in the reference list. The reference list should begin on a new page following the text. Follow the instructions in the AMA Manual of Style, and double space references throughout. Reports of research should limit the number of references to approximately 15 to 20 relevant sources.. Review articles will likely include more extensive reference lists. Use abbreviations for journals that reflect current practice in Index Medicus.

Appendices Number these consecutively. Use appendices for material that is not suited for figures, tables, or text, but that is essential for the reader to understand the content of the manuscript. At the discretion of the editor, if a manuscript is accepted, appendices may appear online only and not in the print version of the manuscript.
Figures Artwork should be created or scanned and saved as either a tagged image file format (TIFF), an encapsulated PostScript (EPS) file, or a PowerPoint (PPT) file. Line art must have a resolution of at least 1200 dots per inch (dpi) and photographs and other scanned images must have a resolution of at least 300 dpi. Color images must be created or scanned and saved as CMYK files. It is important to understand that the figures need to be created for publication according to these guidelines. Figures prepared otherwise will appear with reduced quality when published.
Any artwork that cannot be successfully submitted as an electronic file should be submitted to the Editor on a 3½ inch high density disk, a CD-ROM, or an Iomega Zip disk and accompanied with high resolution laser prints of each figure. Send figures through the mail protected between two pieces of cardboard. Signed photographic release forms must accompany photographs of individuals and should be submitted with the Copyright Form.
Each figure must be saved as a separate file with a file name that indicates the figure number. If text labels are used in the artwork, they must be embedded in the figure file. The figure number and title should not be included in the figure file. That information should be submitted with the Figure Legends inserted at the end of the manuscript file.
Figure Legends: Include a legend for each figure. Figure legends should be brief and specific. They should include the title of the figure and should be inserted into the manuscript file following the references and any appendices. Do not prepare legends for tables.
Tables Each table should be saved in a separate file. Title all tables with a table number that corresponds to its order of appearance within the text. If a table extends beyond a single page, repeat the table number and title on the second page, followed by the word "Continued". Assure that any abbreviations used in the table are written out in full in a footnote listed below the table.
Supplemental Digital Content (SDC) (including Video Abstract for Accepted manuscripts) Authors may submit SDC via Editorial Manager to LWW journals that enhance their article's text to be considered for online posting. SDC may include standard media such as text documents, graphs, audio, video, etc. On the Attach Files page of the submission process, please select Supplemental Audio, Video, or Data for your uploaded file as the Submission Item. If an article with SDC is accepted, our production staff will create a URL with the SDC file. The URL will be placed in the call-out within the article. SDC files are not copy-edited by LWW staff, they will be presented digitally as submitted. For a list of all available file types and detailed instructions, please visit http://links.lww.com/A142.
SDC Call-outs Supplemental Digital Content must be cited consecutively in the text of the submitted manuscript. Citations should include the type of material submitted (Audio, Figure, Table, etc.), be clearly labeled as "Supplemental Digital Content," include the sequential list number, and provide a description of the supplemental content. All descriptive text should be included in the call-out as it will not appear elsewhere in the article. Example: We performed many tests on the degrees of flexibility in the elbow (see Video, Supplemental Digital Content 1, which demonstrates elbow flexibility) and found our results inconclusive.
List of Supplemental Digital Content A listing of Supplemental Digital Content must be submitted at the end of the manuscript file. Include the SDC number and file type of the Supplemental Digital Content. This text will be removed by our production staff and not be published. Example: Supplemental Digital Content 1.wmv
SDC File Requirements All acceptable file types are permissible up to 10 MBs. For audio or video files greater than 10 MBs, authors should first query the journal office for approval. For a list of all available file types and detailed instructions, please visit http://links.lww.com/A142.
ONLINE SUBMISSION CHECKLIST To prepare for online submission you will need to assemble several separate electronic files. The following items should be gathered as you prepare for online submission:
- A file containing the cover letter. This letter must include a statement that indicates that the work is original, has not been published, nor is the work under review by any other journal. The cover letter should also include a statement addressing conflict of interest.
- A file entitled the “Author Status Card” that can be obtained from the Editorial Manger website at the time you submit your manuscript.
- A file that contains the Title Page and Acknowledgements.
- The manuscript file that contains the Abstract, Text, References, Figure Legends, and Appendices.
- Figure files, if drawings, graphs, or photographs are a part of the submission – with each figure saved as a separate file and named Figure 1, Figure 2, etc. to correspond to the order in which the figure is mentioned in the text. It is very important to review the publisher’s instructions for the submission of figures. The specifications, particularly as they relate to the resolution of graphic and photographic images, are critical to assuring the quality of the images portrayed in print and online. Images created at low resolution do not appear crisp when published. Plan ahead when preparing images to assure that they will pass the publisher’s screen. Please refer to the section above entitled: Figures.
- Table files, if tables are a part of the submission – with each table saved as a separate file and named Table 1, Table 2, etc., to correspond to the order in which the table is mentioned in the text.
- You should also be prepared to supply the names and titles/degrees of your co-authors and their professional work affiliations.
- The Copyright Transfer Agreement must be downloaded (click here), completed electronically, and submitted electronically. Each author must complete and digitally sign a copyright release form. For help or more information about electronically signing this form, visit our online FAQs.
ONLINE SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPT All manuscripts must be submitted on-line through the Web Site: http://ped-pt.edmgr.com/.
First time users: After accessing the website, please click on the Register button on the main menu and provide the requested information. You will receive an email with your username and password after you have registered successfully. Please keep this information for future reference.
Users of the site who have been assigned a user name and password need only log in. A member of the Journal’s Review Panel who may be submitting a manuscript for the first time, should use his/her assigned user name and password; and after clicking the log-in button, log in to the system as an author.
You will need to download two files from the website and complete the forms contained within the files as a part of the manuscript submission process. Those files are the Author Status Card and the Copyright Transfer Agreement form. The Author Status card is used to verify eligibility for journal awards. The Copyright form should be filled out and signed by all authors and scanned and/or submitted electronically.
You will be asked to fill in author information and also to copy and paste or type the abstract of your paper into a text box. The abstract must also be submitted as the first section of the manuscript. You will then be asked to upload files in the specific order outlined in the section above entitled “ONLINE SUBMISSION CHECKLIST.” You will be permitted to submit your manuscript for an initial review without submitting the copyright release form. However, if the outcome of a review is to accept or revise the work, the work will not be accepted until copyright forms are submitted. After you have submitted your manuscript you will be able to track the progress of your manuscript through the review process by accessing the Website. If you experience any problems please contact the editor by email at Ann.VanSant@temple.edu.
Open access LWW’s hybrid open access option is offered to authors whose articles have been accepted for publication. With this choice, articles are made freely available online immediately upon publication. Authors may take advantage of the open access option at the point of acceptance to ensure that this choice has no influence on the peer review and acceptance process. These articles are subject to the journal’s standard peer-review process and will be accepted or rejected based on their own merit.
Authors of accepted peer-reviewed articles have the choice to pay a fee to allow perpetual unrestricted online access to their published article to readers globally, immediately upon publication. The article processing charge for Pediatric Physical Therapy is $3,000. The article processing charge for authors funded by the Research Councils UK (RCUK) is $3,800. The publication fee is charged on acceptance of the article and should be paid within 30 days by credit card by the author, funding agency or institution. Payment must be received in full for the article to be published open access.
- Authors retain copyright
Authors retain their copyright for all articles they opt to publish open access. Authors grant LWW a license to publish the article and identify itself as the original publisher.
- Creative Commons license
Articles opting for open access will be freely available to read, download and share from the time of publication. Articles are published under the terms of the Creative Commons License Attribution-NonCommerical No Derivative 3.0 which allows readers to disseminate and reuse the article, as well as share and reuse of the scientific material. It does not permit commercial exploitation or the creation of derivative works without specific permission. To view a copy of this license visit: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0.
- Compliance with NIH, RCUK, Wellcome Trust and other research funding agency accessibility requirements
A number of research funding agencies now require or request authors to submit the post-print (the article after peer review and acceptance but not the final published article) to a repository that is accessible online by all without charge. As a service to our authors, LWW identifies to the National Library of Medicine (NLM) articles that require deposit and transmits the post-print of an article based on research funded in whole or in part by the National Institutes of Health, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, or other funding agencies to PubMed Central. The revised Copyright Transfer Agreement provides the mechanism. LWW ensures that authors can fully comply with the public access requirements of major funding bodies worldwide. Additionally, all authors who choose the open access option will have their final published article deposited into PubMed Central.
RCUK and Wellcome funded authors can choose to publish their paper as open access with the payment of an article process charge (gold route), or opt for their accepted manuscript to be deposited (green route) into PMC with an embargo.
With both the gold and green open access options, the author will continue to sign the Copyright Transfer Agreement (CTA) as it provides the mechanism for LWW to ensure that the author is fully compliant with the requirements. After signature of the CTA, the author will then sign a License to Publish where they will then own the copyright. Those authors who wish to publish their article via the gold route will be able to publish under the terms of the Attribution 3.0 (CCBY) License. To view of a copy of this license visit: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/. Those authors who wish to publish their article via the green route will be able to publish under the rights of the Attribution Non-commercial 3.0 (CCBY NC) license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.0/).
It is the responsibility of the author to inform the Editorial Office and/or LWW that they have RCUK funding. LWW will not be held responsible for retroactive deposits to PMC if the author has not completed the proper forms.
