About the journal

The "Journal of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Sciences" is the official journal of the Japanese Society of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery and the Asian-Pacific Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, and the Japan Biliary Association.
The journal succeeds the "Journal of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery" with its well-established reputation and 16-year history. The newly named journal builds upon that tradition with the expanded scope of disseminating knowledge in broader fields not limited to surgery. Also welcomed are articles on radiology (including interventional radiology), pathology, endoscopy, biochemistry, and physiology--in all aspects of the field of hepatic, biliary, and pancreatic diseases. All contributions, which are published as original articles, topics, review articles, technical notes, images of interest, rapid communications, letters to the editors, and other articles, should be aimed at promoting international scientific collaboration.

Registration of clinical trials
As of January 1, 2009, the "Journal of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Sciences" requires all clinical trials that prospectively assign human subjects to medical interventions, comparison groups, or control groups for the purpose of examining the potential health effects of such interventions, to be registered in one of several free, publicly accessible, non-profit electronically searchable databases such as the one administered by the National Library of Medicine (NLM), which is located at http://www.clinicaltrials.gov.
Trials that begin after January 1, 2009 must register before enrollment of the first study subject, and trials that began before the deadline must register prior to editorial review. Submitted manuscripts must include the unique registration number in the abstract as evidence of registration. For details regarding the required minimal registration data set, please go to the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) site at http://www.icmje.org/#clin_trials.

Preparation of manuscripts
All manuscripts must be written in English, typed double-spaced with wide margins throughout. Manuscripts that have been extensively modified in the editorial process will be returned to the author for retyping. Incomplete or improperly prepared manuscripts will be returned to authors without review.
A separate title page should be provided. Abstract, text, acknowledgments, references, tables, legends, and figures should begin on separate sheets and follow in that order. Pages must be numbered, starting with the title page and continuing through the references. Place the number in the upper right-hand corner of each page. Standard abbreviations and units should be used. Define abbreviations at first appearance, and avoid their use in the title and abstract. Use generic names of drugs and chemicals.
Title page
The title page should include:
• A brief, specific, and informative title
• The name(s) of the author(s)
• The affiliation(s) and address(es) of the author(s)
• The e-mail address, telephone, and fax numbers of the corresponding author
• 3–5 key words or phrases for indexing
Abstract
Please provide a structured abstract of no more than 200 words which should be divided into the following sections:
- Background/Purpose
- Methods
- Results
- Conclusions
No abstract necessary for images of interest, rapid communication, and letter to the editors.
Text
The text of articles except review articles, images of interest, and rapid communications should be divided into the following sections: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion.
Citations of articles in languages other than English
If an article in a language other than English is cited, a sentence such as the one shown below should be included in the text in your own words to help readers to understand the main point of the article.
e.g.: As Shiratori et al reported in 1983, XXXXXXXXXXXXXX (annotation of the article) [2].
References
Number references consecutively in the order cited in the text, not alphabetically. Accuracy of reference data is the author’s responsibility. Personal communications and unpublished data should not be included in the reference list but should be cited in parentheses in the text. If such a citation is from someone other than the authors, a letter should be submitted in which the direct quotation is given with the author’s signature. References should list the first six authors only, followed by “et al” if there are other coauthors; the complete title; the abbreviated journal name according to Index Medicus; the year of publication; the volume number; and inclusive page numbers. For articles published in non-English, follow the style of example [2]. If such an article has an English abstract, see also example [2].

All figures are to be numbered using Arabic numerals. Figure parts should be denoted by lowercase letters. If illustrations are supplied with uppercase labeling, lowercase letters will still be used in the figure legends and citations. Figures should always be cited in text in consecutive numerical order. For each figure, please supply a figure caption. Make sure to identify all elements found in the figure in the caption.
Identify any previously published material by giving the original source in the form of a reference at the end of the caption.
For more information about preparing your illustrations, please refer to the artwork guidelines available at the end of this document.

The editorial board re-serves the right to accept or reject letters for publication. It is understood that, if accepted, letters may be edited as long as the writer's views are not misrepresented.
If the printed pages of any article exceed the above-mentioned specifications, the author will be requested to cover the additional publication costs.
Electronic supplementary material
Electronic supplementary material will be published in the online version only. It may consist of
• Information that cannot be printed: animations, video clips, sound recordings
• Information that is more convenient in electronic form: sequences, spectral data, etc.
• Large original data, e.g. additional tables, illustrations, etc.
Submission:
• Supply all supplementary material in standard file formats.
• To accommodate user downloads, please keep in mind that larger-sized files may require very long download times and that some users may experience other problems during downloading.
Audio, Video, and Animations:
• Always use MPEG-1 (.mpg) format.
Text and Presentations:
• Submit your material in PDF format; .doc or .ppt files are not suitable for long-term viability.
• A collection of figures may also be combined in a PDF file.
Spreadsheets:
• Spreadsheets should be converted to PDF if no interaction with the data is intended.
• If the readers should be encouraged to make their own calculations, spreadsheets should be submitted as .xls files (MS Excel).

Collecting Multiple Files:
• It is possible to collect multiple files in a .zip or .gz file.
Numbering:
• If supplying any supplementary material, the text must make specific mention of the material as a citation, similar to that of figures and tables (e.g., ". . . as shown in Animation 3").
• Name your files accordingly, e.g., Animation3.mpg.
Captions:
• For each supplementary material, please supply a concise caption describing the content of the file.
Processing of supplementary files:
• Electronic supplementary material will be published as received from the author without any conversion, editing, or reformatting.
Electronic supplementary material
After acceptance
During the production phase the following issues have to be clarified:
Offprints
Offprints of each article are available in lots of 100; to order these, fill out the order form received with the proofs.
Color in print
Online publication of color illustrations is free of charge. For color in the print version, authors will be expected to make a contribution towards the extra costs (60,000 yen for each page). Otherwise the figures will be printed in black and white. Please note that, in such cases, it is authors’ responsibility to prepare figures to be illustrative enough to convey the necessary information even after they are converted into black and white.
Online First
The article will be published online after receipt of the corrected proofs. This is the official first publication citable with the DOI. After release of the printed version, the paper can also be cited by issue and page numbers. After online publication, further changes can only be made in the form of an Erratum, which will be hyperlinked to the article.
Proof reading
Authors are informed by e-mail that a temporary URL has been created from which they can obtain their proofs.
The purpose of the proof is to check for typesetting errors and the completeness and accuracy of the text, tables and figures. Substantial changes in content, e.g., new results, corrected values, title and authorship, are not allowed without the approval of the Editor.
Artwork guidelines
Electronic figure submission
Supply all figures electronically. Indicate what graphics program was used to create the artwork. For vector graphics, the preferred format is EPS; for halftones, please use TIFF format. MS Office files are also acceptable. Use of double-byte characters should be avoided. Vector graphics containing fonts must have the fonts embedded in the files.
Name your figure files with “Fig” and the figure number, e.g., Fig1.eps.
Line art
Definition: Black and white graphic with no shading. Do not use faint lines and/or lettering, and check that all lines and lettering within the figures are legible at final size. All lines should be at least 0.1 mm (0.3 pt) wide. Line drawings should have a minimum resolution of 1200 dpi. Vector graphics containing fonts must have the fonts embedded in the files.
Halftone art
Definition: Photographs, drawings, or paintings with fine shading, etc. If any magnification is used in the photo-graphs, indicate this by using scale bars within the figures themselves. Halftones should have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
Combination art
Definition: a combination of halftone and line art, e.g., halftones containing line drawing, extensive lettering, color diagrams, etc. Combination artwork should have a minimum resolution of 600 dpi.
Color art
Color art is free of charge for online publication.
If black and white will be shown in the print version, make sure that the main information will still be visible. Many colors are not distinguishable from one another when converted to black and white. A simple way to check this is to make a xerographic copy to see if the necessary distinctions between the different colors are still apparent.
If the figures will be printed in black and white, do not refer to color in the captions.
Color illustrations should be submitted as RGB (8 bits per channel).
Figure lettering
To add lettering, it is best to use Helvetica or Arial (sans-serif fonts). Use lowercase letters to denote figure parts. Keep lettering consistently sized throughout your final-sized artwork, usually about 2–3 mm (8–12 pt). Variance of type size within an illustration should be minimal, e.g., do not use 8-pt type on an axis and 20-pt type for the axis label. Avoid effects such as shading, outline letters, etc. Do not include titles or captions in your illustrations.
Figure placement and size
When preparing your figures, size figures to fit in the column width. Figures should be 86 mm, 131 mm, or 176 mm wide and not higher than 234 mm. The publisher reserves the right to reduce or enlarge figures.
