About the journal
Atmospheric Science Letters (ASL) is a wholly electronic journal. Its aim is to provide a fully peer reviewed publication route for new shorter contributions in the field of atmospheric and closely related sciences. Through its ability to publish shorter contributions more rapidly than conventional journals, ASL offers a framework that promotes new understanding and creates scientific debate - providing a platform for discussing scientific issues and techniques.
We encourage the presentation of multi-disciplinary work and contributions that utilise ideas and techniques from parallel areas. We particularly welcome contributions that maximise the visualisation capabilities offered by a purely on-line journal. ASL welcomes papers in the fields of:
- Dynamical meteorology
- Ocean-atmosphere systems
- Climate change, variability and impacts
- New or improved observations from instrumentation
- Hydrometeorology
- Numerical weather prediction
- Data assimilation
- Physical processes of the atmosphere
- Land surface-atmosphere systems
Although the main part of the journal is its fully peer-reviewed research articles, ASL also has sections related to articles of general interest, scientific meetings reports, book reviews, news and events. Submissions in all of these areas are welcomed by the Editorial team.
ReadershipAtmospheric scientists, meteorologists, climatologists, environmental scientists, physical geographers, geophysicists
Keywords Atmosphere; dynamical meteorology; ocean-atmosphere systems; climate change; hydrometeorology; numerical weather prediction; land surface-atmosphere systems

Instructions to Authors
ASL's online submission system
To facilitate even faster peer-review times ASL use an online submission system that allows authors to upload their files through the ASL wesbite. In addition the system will allow authors to check the status of their paper throughout the peer review process.
New users will need to create an account within the system, a 3 step process that takes a matter of minutes to complete. Log-in information is sent via email immediately upon completion. Manuscript submission takes place in just 7 screens and is a simple, intuitive process. Visit the following URL to start submitting today:

General submission instructions
Authors should indicate a suitable Editor or Editorial Board Member to whom the paper could be allocated. However, the Journal reserves the right to reallocate manuscripts to the most appropriate Editor. Authors should also suggest the names of up to five individuals who could serve as referees and supply their contact details where known.
Authors must also supply by mail:
- a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
- Permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form . Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript. Permission is required irrespective of authorship or publisher except for documents in the public domain. To obtain or query permission for material published by Wiley please email: permreq@wiley.co.uk
Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by the Journal.
Manuscript Style. The language of the Journal is English. Text of papers should be between 1,500 and 3,500 words, 3,500 words being the maximum limit, including references, keywords and an abstract of no more than 100 words. An equivalent length of document, for guidance, would be between three and five A4 pages of single spaced text in 12pt font size. Please include the total word count in a covering letter when submitting.
The title page must list the full article title, short title of up to 70 characters, and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including email, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
File formats. Submissions are welcome with the file extensions .DOC and .RTF. In addition to the text, the paper may contain up to five tables and figures as .TIFF, .GIFF or .EPS colour images, or animation or movie loop sequences (see format details below). Authors are encouraged to make use of the facilities that are available to publications on the internet, i.e. links to other on-line reference points and web-based sources of information. We do not recommend submitting LaTeX files but if you do we require an .eps or .pdf file in addition to the source files.
Please note: This journal does not accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents at this time. Please use Word's "Save As" option to save your document as a .doc file type. If you try to upload a Word 2007 document you will be prompted to save .docx files as .doc files.
Animations and movies Please submit animations and movie files in one of the three preferred formats: .GIF, .MPEG or .AVI. We prefer to not receive files that require plug-ins, such as Flash files (.fla suffix). There is a general upper size limit of 1 MB, and 2000 pixels for image files (width or length). The recommended resolution for animated GIF files is 100 x 100 dpi. Files that exceed the size limits will not be uploaded to the ASL homepage. Authors should include a "still" image of the first frame.
Reference style . References should be quoted in the text as name and year within brackets and listed at the end of the paper alphabetically. Where reference is made to more than one work by the same author published in the same year, identify each citation in the text as follows: (Collins, 2003a, Collins, 2003b). Where three or more authors are listed in the reference list, please cite in the text as (Collins et al., 2003).
All references must be complete and accurate. Where possible the DOI for the reference should be included at the end of the reference. Online citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:
- Kidson JW. 1997. The utility of surface and upper air data in synoptic climatological specification of surface climatic variables. International Journal of Climatology 17 : 399-413.
- Isaaks EH, Srivaslava RM. 1989. Applied Geostatistics . Oxford University Press: Oxford.
- Diaz HF, Hoerling MP, Eischeid JK. In press. ENSO variability, teleconnections and climate change. International Journal of Climatology DOI: 10.1002/joc.631.
Copyright . To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement , transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication.
Once the paper has been accepted, authors should send the completed Copyright Transfer Agreement by post to: ASL Content Editor, John Wiley & Sons, Ltd, The Atrium, Southern Gate, Chichester, West Sussex, PO19 8SQ, UK. Late receipt of the signed agreement will delay publication.
Pre-Submission English-language Editing Authors for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission to improve the English. A list of independent suppliers of editing services can be found at www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/english_language.asp Japanese authors can also find a list of local English improvement services at http://www.wiley.com.jp/journals/editcontribute.html All services are paid for and arranged by the author, and use of one of these services does not guarantee acceptance or preference for publication.
Further Information . Proofs will be sent by PDF to the author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of corrections is preferred, preferably within two days of receipt. Free access to the final PDF offprint of your article will be available via author services only (unless otherwise stated). Please therefore sign up for author services if you would like to access your article PDF offprint and enjoy the many other benefits the service offers.
