About the journal

Aims & Scope

Waves in Random and Complex Media (formerly Waves in Random Media) is a broad interdisciplinary journal that reports theoretical, applied and experimental research related to any wave phenomena.

The Journal is relevant to scientists and engineers working in the field of wave propagation, scattering and imaging in random or complex media. Papers on theoretical developments, experimental results and analytical/numerical studies are considered for publication as well as deterministic problems when also linked to random or complex media. Topics include studies of waves in random and/or complex media, such as tissue or metamaterials, nonlinear, chaotic or fractal media, as well as relevant inverse problems.

Examples are:

  • Propagation, diffraction of classical waves
  • Quantum and nonlinear effects in complex media
  • Scattering and inverse scattering, backscattering enhancement, multiple scattering, rough surface and volume scattering
  • Surface waves and surface excitation, including plasmonics
  • Statistical properties of waves
  • Electromagnetics of metamaterials and photonic bandgap structures

Examples of specific applications include optical properties of photonic crystals, applications of microwaves to remote sensing (e.g. FOPEN) amd medical imaging.

All published research articles in Waves in Random and Complex Media have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and anonymized refereeing by at least two expert referees.

Taylor & Francis makes every effort to ensure the accuracy of all the information (the "Content") contained in its publications. However, Taylor & Francis and its agents and licensors make no representations or warranties whatsoever as to the accuracy, completeness or suitability for any purpose of the Content and disclaim all such representations and warranties whether express or implied to the maximum extent permitted by law. Any views expressed in this publication are the views of the authors and are not the views of Taylor & Francis.

Instructions to Authors

Instructions for Authors

For further information about Waves in Random and Complex Media please visit the journal homepage.

1. Introduction

It is essential that authors prepare their manuscripts according to established specifications. Failure to follow them may result in your paper being delayed and the effectiveness of the search capabilities offered by electronic delivery will depend upon the care used by authors in preparing their manuscripts. Therefore, contributors are strongly encouraged to read these instructions carefully before preparing a manuscript for submission, and to check the manuscript for compliance with these notes before submitting it for publication.

2. Submitting a Paper to Waves in Random and Complex Media

All submissions should be made online at Waves in Random and Complex Media's Manuscript Central site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Papers can be created, using a standard program such as MSWORD or LaTeX (if you create a LaTeX file please be sure to use the below LaTeX style guide and Class file). Figures should be uploaded as separate files. Source files are required for typesetting of all accepted manuscripts. Authors are therefore asked to send MS Word or LaTeX source files from first submission onwards. PDF files are acceptable only if accompanied by MS Word or LaTeX source files.

3. General Guidelines

Waves in Random and Complex Media considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Waves in Random and Complex Media, that they have not been published already, and that they are not under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs that Waves in Random and Complex Media incurs and their papers will not be published.

Regular papers submitted to Waves in Random and Complex Media must report original research and will be subjected to review by referees. The Journal also publishes Letters to the Editor and Topical Reviews.

There are a limited number of colour pages within the annual page allowance. Authors should restrict their use of colour to situations where it is necessary on scientific, and not merely cosmetic, grounds. In addition, authors may pay to publish colour illustrations, but please consult the publisher regarding cost before submission. Figures which appear in black-and-white in the print edition of the Journal will appear in colour in the online edition, assuming colour originals are supplied.

Writing your paper

  • For all manuscripts, non-discriminatory language is mandatory. Sexist or racist terms must not be used.
  • A typical article will not exceed 8,500 words or 14 typed pages. Papers that greatly exceed this will be critically reviewed with respect to length. Authors should include a word count with their manuscript.
  • Each paper should have one to six keywords.
  • Papers are accepted only in English.
  • Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout including the reference section, with wide (3 cm) margins.
  • All the authors of a paper should exclude their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses from the main body of manuscripts, to allow for double-anonymous peer-review. This information will be completed elsewhere during the online submission.
  • Abstracts of not more than 200 words are required for all papers submitted and should precede the text of a paper - see Notes on Style.
  • Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgments; appendixes (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual sheets); figure caption(s) (as a list).
  • Section headings should be concise and numbered sequentially, using a decimal system for subsections.
  • Units are not to be italicized.
  • When using a word which is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark authors must use the symbol ?or TM or alternatively a footnote can be inserted using the wording below:

This article includes a word that is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark. Its inclusion does not imply it has acquired for legal purposes a non-proprietary or general significance, nor is any other judgement implied concerning its legal status.

4. Copyright

It is a condition of publication that authors vest or license copyright of their articles, including abstracts, in Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the material elsewhere after publication providing that prior permission is obtained from Taylor & Francis. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.

Exceptions are made for authors of Crown or US Government employees whose policies require that copyright cannot be transferred to other parties. We ask that a signed statement to this effect is submitted when returning proofs for accepted papers.

For details on copyright permission click here. Copies of the permission letters should be sent with the manuscript to the Editors.
