About the journal

The advent of new technologies and growing recognition of the enormous degree of microbial diversity has revolutionized our understanding of microbiology as a discipline. Microbiology is moving into a new era that focuses less on specific organisms and more on the processes and mechanisms that link them. Nature Reviews Microbiology embraces this new era by encompassing the discipline in its broadest sense. We take an integrated approach to microbiology, bridging fundamental research and its clinical, industrial and environmental applications to create a single information resource for all who share an interest in microbial life. Nature Reviews Microbiology publishes the highest-quality reviews and perspectives highlighting important developments in our understanding of bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa, their interaction with their environments, how these organisms are harnessed in human endeavour and their impact on society. Also featured are timely summaries of significant research papers, as well as monthly updates on the latest developments in microbial genomics, post-genomic biology and infectious diseases. In line with our ongoing ambition to overcome the traditional barriers between bacteriology, virology, mycology and protozoan biology, articles are tailored to appeal to microbiologists of every persuasion and at every level. The scope of the journal encompasses, but will not be limited to, the following fields pertaining to bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa:
- Biochemistry, physiology and molecular biology
- Genetics and genomics
- Ecology, evolution and biodiversity
- Cellular microbiology
- Environmental microbiology
- Pathogenesis and host defence
- Clinical and diagnostic microbiology
- Infectious diseases
- Antimicrobial therapies and vaccines
- Epidemiology and public health microbiology
- Applied and industrial microbiology
- Microbiology education
- Microbiology and society

Chief Editor: David O'Connell, PhD
David's scientific career began at University College Dublin and the University of Calgary, where he investigated biochemical aspects of electron transfer in Desulfovibrio vulgaris. After obtaining a PhD, he moved to a postdoctoral position at Trinity College, Dublin in Tim Foster's lab. Here, his research focused on the virulence strategies of Staphylococcus aureus, in particular the fibrinogen-binding receptor ClfA. When the weather got particularly wet and cold in Ireland, he 'wintered' in the lab of Magnus Höök at Texas A&M University where he applied techniques of protein chemistry to the study of staphylococcal pathogenesis. David moved into scientific publishing in August 1999, when he joined the Trends review journals as Editor of Trends in Microbiology, becoming Managing Editor in 2001. In January 2003, he joined the Nature Publishing Group to launch Nature Reviews Microbiology, allowing him to pursue his ambition to create a tertiary publication to serve the information needs of all microbiologists.
Associate Editor: Susan Jones, PhD
Susan brings an extensive background in bacterial gene regulation to Nature Reviews Microbiology. After completing a first degree in Microbiology and Virology at Warwick University, Susan carried out doctoral research with George Salmond that contributed to identifying a key role for homoserine lactone signalling molecules in bacterial virulence. Susan's wide-ranging postdoctoral experience includes research into cell-cycle regulation of chemotaxis genes in the model bacterium Caulobacter, and regulation of variable spirochaete virulence genes. Most recently, in Martin Buck's lab she studied regulation of transcription in Escherichia coli by an AAA+ protein that responds to membrane stress. Susan joined Nature Reviews Microbiology in February 2003.
Associate Editor: Sheilagh Molloy, PhD
Before embarking on a career in scientific publishing, Sheilagh studied for a BSc at the University of Aberdeen and then moved to the University of Liverpool where she carried out her PhD studies looking at DNA gyrase and its sites of action in Escherichia coli. Following a short postdoc in Edinburgh, she joined the Trends in Microbiology team in April 1999. After working as Assistant Editor on Trends in Microbiology for nearly 4 years, Sheilagh moved to join David and Susan on the launch team of Nature Reviews Microbiology in February 2003.
Locum Associate Editor: Shannon Amoils, MBBCh, MRCP (UK), MSc
Shannon qualified and practiced as a doctor in her native South Africa and after moving to the UK obtained a Master's degree in Immunology from Imperial College. As well as her experience at NPG, Shannon has also worked as a freelance editor for an online medical education site. Shannon started at Nature Reviews as the Assistant Editor for Nature Reviews Microbiology and Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology and during this time she proved to be an invaluable asset to both teams, and is now the locum Associate Editor on Nature Reviews Microbiology while Susan is on maternity leave.
