About the journal
Soil Use and Management provides an international forum for those applying scientific principles to understand and solve important soil problems as they affect crop production and environmental issues.
Published on behalf of British Society of Soil Science, Soil Use and Management aims to communicate an understanding of management techniques for the sustainable use of land. Papers taking a broad view of 'use' and 'management' covering agriculture, forestry and amenity provision are accepted.
Four issues per year - containing highly relevant, original research.
¡¤ Topics covered include:
¡¤ Environmental protection
¡¤ Soil-crop interactions
¡¤ Soil erosion and conservation
¡¤ Pollution control
¡¤ Restoration and reclamation of land
¡¤ Evaluation of soil surveys
¡¤ Development of methodology
The Journal publishes research papers, reviews, short communications and informed comment on the wide range of applications of soil science.

Instructions to Authors
Soil Use and Management provides an international forum for original papers in the field of practical uses of soil science. Papers are accepted on the understanding that the work has been submitted exclusively to the Journal and has not been published elsewhere unless otherwise stated.
The Journal publishes research papers, reviews, short communications and informed comment on the wide range of applications of soil science. Research papers and reviews should not exceed 5000 words (including space in tables and figures as word equivalents) and short communications 1000 words.
A broad view will be taken on `use', and `management' covering agriculture, horticulture, forestry, amenity and 'brown field' sites. Suitable topics will include soil-crop interactions, environmental protection, sustainable land use, soil conservation, pollution control, restoration and reclamation of land, evaluation of soil surveys and development of methods. Papers should show how research has contributed to the understanding or solution of practical problems.
Structure of papers All submissions should be double spaced on line numbered paper following the style of recent issues of the Journal and provide:
Title page, with author(s) names and affiliations with fax number and e-mail address of the corresponding author;
Abstract, preferably no more than 200 words accurately and informatively summarizing the paper;
Introduction, giving the context of the paper with a short review and clear objectives;
Main text, preferably subdivided by headings such as Methods, Results, Discussion, and a short Conclusion (not for repetition of abstract).
Three categories of subheading are available: Heading capital in bold centred with new paragraph; Italics on left with new paragraph; Italics on left with text running on.
References (see details later).
Tables There should be no more than necessary. Each table should be on a separate page with sequential numbering, caption on separate sheet (e.g. Table 1. Nitrogen uptake by wheat.), footnotes (superscript a, b, c, etc.) and presented to be self explanatory without reference to the text of the paper. All decimals and numbers should be aligned in columns. Numerical results presented as means with relevant standard errors and/or statistically significant differences, quoting probability levels. The number of figures in means should not exceed that denoting reasonable accuracy. Do not include vertical lines.
Figures These should be sharp and clear in black on white paper and should not repeat data in tables. Captions should be typed on a separate sheet (e.g. Figure 1. The effect of cover crops on measured nitrate leaching after barley.). In text refer to Figure 1. Figures should be approximately the intended final size with lettering and lines of sufficient thickness and quality. They should be designed to fit into one or two columns. Computer generated figures should not contain grey tints or complicated hatching. Submit figures on hard copy and on disk if possible.
Black and white photographs are acceptable if they are essential. They should be on good quality paper at the intended final size with any required lettering or numbering (e.g. scale bar) already inserted. Colour photographs can be published but the cost will be charged to the authors.
References Citations of authors in the text should be made by naming up to the first two authors, or if there are more, using the first name and et al. and the year of publication in parentheses. Where there is more than one reference, they should be listed in date order and separated by semicolons, e.g. (Webster 1985; Webster & Catt 1986; Davies et al. 1998). If there are two or more papers by the same author(s) in the same year, then a, b etc. should be added after the year (1999a,b).
The references must then be listed in the REFERENCE section at the end of the paper, and conform to the following styles:

Disks When a paper has been accepted, the author needs to submit to the editorial office a computer disk containing the final version of the paper together with the final manuscript. Please (1) Submit the text in a common format ?Word '97 for Windows, WordPerfect 5.1 for Windows are preferred; if using Mac please save in PC format. Specify which software(s), including version, were used for the text and figures. (2) Label the disk clearly with the author's name, short title of the paper and the Journal's name (SUM). (3) Keep a backup file.
Proofs Authors will receive page proofs which should be corrected and returned promptly.
Offprints 50 copies of each paper are provided free to the author (or major author). Additional copies may be obtained on payment. Orders must be made at proof stage.
Copyright Papers are accepted on the understanding that the work has been submitted exclusively to the Journal. Authors will be supplied with a copyright form which must be completed and returned to the publisher. Papers will not be published until the signed copyright disclaimer has been received.
Manuscripts The original and two copies of the complete paper should be sent to the Editor:
