About the journal

Simulation Practice And Theory is the new international journal in the field of simulation, publishing original high-quality applied, research and tutorial papers across all facets of the discipline.

AIMS

Emphasis is placed on providing a diverse combination of studies on different applications of simulation - from biology and medicine, through astrophysics and astronautics, to earthquake and civil engineering.

In order to make papers accessible for readers of all disciplines, they are presented in the following major steps:

modelling;

computational implementation of the derived model;

mathematical problems encountered;

techniques applied.

Theoretical papers are only included if they are of practical value for application-oriented readers. Articles on a new theory, method or algorithm therefore deal with its objectives; its potential benefits; any experience gained; any innovation achieved through a specific approach.

Special issues detail progress achieved in a particular field of interest, e.g. a significant application of simulation, simulation methodology or simulation tools.

SCOPE

Simulation Practice And Theory addresses the following interest areas:

Parallel and distributed simulation;

Supercomputing in simulation;

Environment, pollution and ecology;

Mechanical, electrical, chemical and control engineering;

Biology and medicine;

Education and training;

Economics, business and management;

Astrophysics and astronautics;

Type of contributions

The journal welcomes the following types of contributions:

any application area of systems simulation (industry, economics, management, agriculture, biology, ecology, energy systems, education, training,etc.),

simulation methodology (system modelling, system design, solution methods, algorithms, formula manipulation, etc.),

progress on software tools (simulation environments, simulation languages, model specification, distributed computing,etc.), as well as on hardware tools (parallel and massively parallel computers, opto- electronic interconnects and optical computing, etc.).

To whom can I submit my manuscript?

Web Submission Site:

Authors are encouraged to submit their papers electronically by using online manuscript submission at http://www.elsubmit.com/esubmit/simpat. Authors interested in online submission are requested to go to the website and upload their manuscript and its associated artwork. An electronic (PDF) proof is generated and the reviewing process is carried out using that PDF. It is crucial that all graphical and tabular elements be placed within the text, so that the PDF is suitable for reviewing. This will also allow the preferred position of placement to be indicated; however please note that due to journal conventions, it may not be possible to meet all requirements for placement of artwork. Moreover, the PDF file may be edited after acceptance to follow journal standards. Authors and editors send and receive all correspondence by email via the website and no paper correspondence is performed.

Electronic submission
Please send your paper by e-mail to
simpra@elsevier.com.. Use the phrase "SIMPAT submission" in the subject line. You must send a printable format PDF or PS preferably. Word is acceptable if the file is not too big and sent as an attachment to the e-mail. The printable format will be used for the reviewing process.

If you wish to submit hardcopies of a new manuscript, it may be sent to:

General Author Instructions

Each paper should be introduced by three to five keywords as well as by a selfcontained abstract of no more than 100 words not counting the formulas.

Please make sure that the paper is submitted in its final form. Corrections in the proof stage other than printer's errors should be avoided: costs arising from such corrections will be charged to the authors.

Footnotes should be avoided if possibleand be brief. They should be numbered consecutively. References should be listed alphabetically, as in the following examples: books [1], articles in journals [2], papers in a contributed volume [3,4], unpublished papers [5].

[1] E. Borger, Computability, Complexity, Logic (North-Holland, Amsterdam, 1989).

Figures should be provided in a form suitable for photographic reproduction and reduction. Lettering should be uniform of size corresponding to the anticipated reduction.

Handwritten lettering on figures is not acceptable. Figures should be identified by arabic numerals and the captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet rather than lettered on the figures themselves. Photographs and coloured pictures must be of impeccable quality. Please note that for colour photographs the publisher will charge the printing costs to the author. A final accepted manuscript can be submitted in paper only (typed on one side in doublespacing with wide margins). An accepted article can also be submitted in electronic form (a LaTeX file, or as a file from other word processors).

Upon acceptance: Electronic Submissions: LaTeX documents.

Only the final accepted manuscript can be submitted on disk, along with a paper-printed version which is identical to the file. Please label the disk with your name, and mention which word processor you have used. LaTeX files of papers that have been accepted for publication may be sent to the Publisher by e-mail or on a diskette (3.5"or 5.25" MS-DOS). If the file is suitable, proofs will be produced without rekeying the text. The article should be encoded in ESP-LaTeX, standard LaTeX, or AMS-LaTeX (in document style "article"). The Elsevier-LaTex package, together with instructions on how to prepare a file, is available from the Publisher. This package can also be obtained through Elsevier Science FTP-server, or using anonymous FTP from the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network (CTAN) at sites in the USA in the United Kingdom and in Germany.

Illustrative material (original figures or high-quality glossy prints, or photographs showing a sharp contrast) should be included separately. No changes from the accepted version are permissible, without the explicit approval by the Editors. The Publisher reserves the right to decide whether to use the author's file or not. If the file is sent by e-mail, the full name of the journal should be mentioned in the subject field of the message to identify the paper. Authors should include an ASCII table (available from the Publisher) in their files to enable the detection of transmission errors. The files should be mailed to Paulette de Boer, Elsevier Science B.V., P.O. Box 103, 1000 AC Amsterdam, Netherlands. Fax: +31 20 4852 616. For the purpose of further correspondence the manuscript should end with a complete mailing address, preferably including e-mail address, of at least one of the authors.

Upon acceptance: Electronic submission: Non-LaTeX documents.

Only accepted manuscript can be submitted on disk, along with a paper-printed version which is identical to the file. Please label the disk with your name, and mention which word processor you have used.

The word-processed text should be in single column format. Keep the layout of the text as simple as possible; in particular, do not use the word-processor's options to justify the text or to hyphenate the words.

The electronic text should be prepared in a way very similar to that of conventional manuscripts (see also Guide for Authors). The list of references, tables and figure legends should be compiled separately from the main text. Do not reserve space for the figures and tables in the text; instead, indicate their approximate locations, either directly in the electronic text or on the manuscript.

The final text should be submitted both in manuscript form and on diskette. Use standard 3.5" or 5.25" diskettes for this purpose. Both double density (DD) and high density (HD) diskettes are acceptable.
It is recommended to store the main text, list of references, tables and figure legends in separate text files with clearly identifiable file names (for example, with extensions .TXT, .REF, .TBL, .FIG).
The format of the files depends on the word-processor used.
Texts made with DEC WPS PLUS, DisplayWrite, First Choice, IBM Writing Assistant, Microsoft Word, Multimate, PFS:Write, Professional Writer, Samma Word, Sprint, Total Word, Volkswriter, Wang PC, WordMARC, WordPerfect, Wordstar, or files supplied in DCA.RFT format can be readily processed. In all other cases the preferred text format is ASCII.

Essential is that name and version of the word-processing program and the type of computer on which the text was prepared is clearly indicated on the diskette label or the accompanying checklist.

The manuscript may contain parts (e.g. formulas or complex tables) or last-minute corrections which are not included in the text on diskette; however, if this is the case then the differences with the diskette version should be clearly marked on the manuscript.

Illustrative material (original figures or high-quality glossy prints, or photographs showing a sharp contrast) should be included separately.

Keyword Instructions

Important Notice: please add one to five keywords to your article.

Keywords are essential for the accessibility and retrievability of your article. Keywords assigned to articles will be assembled in a keyword index which will be printed in the last issue of each volume for each journal, and in cumulative indexes. In addition, it is planned to make keywords available on Internet.

To maximize the consistency with which such keywords are assigned by different authors, the following guidelines have been drawn up.

Each keyword (which can be a phrase of more than one word) should describe one single concept. Often words like "and" or "of" should be avoided.

Avoid very general keywords which become meaningless once in a keyword list. Examples to avoid are "action", "computer", "mathematics". Check whether the keywords as a whole describe the outlines of the article.

Use natural language: for instance "automatic error recovery" rather than "error recovery, automatic".

Try to use nouns and adjectives as much as possible (i.e. use "automatic error recovery" rather than "recovering errors automatically"). Do not use nouns in the plural form. Use English rather than American spelling (regardless of the spelling used for the article itself).

Avoid the use of abbreviations as much as possible, unless an abbreviation is so well-established that the full term is rarely used (e.g. use "laser" instead of "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation", but use "computer aided design" instead of "CAD").

Although these guidelines are not mandatory, they should be adhered to where possible.
