About the journal

Separation and Purification Technology is an international journal providing a comprehensive coverage of all aspects of separation and purification of homogeneous gaseous and liquid solutions and heterogeneous mixtures, such as emulsions or gas/solid, liquid/solid, and solid mixtures. Separation and Purification Technology welcomes in particular contributions focused on applications in the environmental protection industry, the recycling of valuable materials from industrial wastes, and the treatment of separation and purification problems in emerging technologies including energy storage and conversion systems, raw material and renewable energy exploitation, biotechnology and chemical or petrochemical processing.

The papers published in Separation and Purification Technology should have either theoretical significance or practical utility or both. They may be presented in the form of full articles, short communications or state-of-the-art reviews.

All contributions will be reviewed by two or more referees to ensure both scientific quality and technical relevance. Revisions of manuscripts may thus be required.

Information regarding manuscript submission can be obtained from any one of the editors.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscript
1. Manuscripts should be written in English.
2. Submit the original and three copies of your manuscript. Enclose the original illustrations and three sets of copies. Electronic manuscripts are also acceptable.
3. Manuscripts should be typewritten and double spaced. Leave a margin of at least 3 cm on each side of the paper. Corrections should be made in the text, not in the margins. Instructions to the copy editor should be made on a separate sheet, not in the margins.
4. The use of nomenclature and symbols adopted by IUPAC is recommended (Quantities, Units and Symbols in Physical Chemistry, Blackwell Scientific, Oxford, 1988).
5. Manuscripts should be organized in the following order:
a. Title
b. Name of author and affiliation (the corresponding author should be indicated together with the appropriate fax, telephone and e-mail numbers)
c. Abstract
d. Five keywords for indexing
e. Contents of paper
f. Introduction
g. Text
h. Acknowledgements
i. Appendices
j. References
k. Tables
1. Figure captions
m. Figures

Elsevier reserves the privilege of returning to the author for revision accepted manuscripts and illustrations which are not in the proper form given in this guide. Submission of an article is understood to imply that the article is original and unpublished and is not being considered for publication elsewhere. Upon acceptance of an article by the journal, the author(s) will be asked to transfer the copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.

Abstract
1. The abstract should be no longer than 500 words.
2. The abstract should be a concise and factual description of the contents and conclusions as well as an indication of any new findings.

Tables
1. Authors should take notice of the limitations set by the size and lay-out of the journal. A table should not exceed the printed area of the page. If this seems impossible, try reversing columns and rows.
2. Large tables should be avoided. Fold-outs will not normally be accepted. If many data are to be presented, an attempt should be made to divide these over two or more tables.
3.Tables to be treated as artwork, eg. those containing complex chemical structures, from which prints need to be made, should not be folded.
4. Tables should be numbered using Arabic numerals according to their sequence in the text. The text should include references to all tables.
5. Tables should be typewritten on separate pages, added to the manuscript. They should never be included in the text.
6. Each table should have a brief and self-explanatory title.
7. Column headings should be brief, but sufficiently explanatory. Units of measurements should be added between parentheses.
8. Vertical lines should not be used to separate columns. Leave some extra space between the columns instead.
9. Explanations, essential to the understanding of the table, should be given in footnotes at the bottom of the table.

Illustrations
1. All illustrations should be supplied on separate sheets, not stuck down and not folded.
2. Illustrations should be numbered using Arabic numerals according to their sequence in the text. References to each figure should be made in the text.
3. Each illustration should be identified on the reverse side (or, in the case of line drawings, on the lower frontside) by its number, the name of the author, and the title of the paper.
4. Illustrations should be designed with the format of the pages of this journal in mind. Fold-outs will not normally be accepted. Illustrations should be of such a size as to allow a reduction of 50%.
5. Lettering should be in black, waterproof drawing ink or by printed labels. Make sure that the size of the lettering is large enough to allow a reduction of 50% without becoming illegible. The lettering should be in English. Use the same kind of lettering throughout.
6. Use bar scales on all illustrations instead of numerical scales that must be changed with reduction.
7. Each illustration should be accompanied by a caption. Put the captions on a separate list, added to the manuscript.
8. Photographs are only acceptable if they have good contrast and intensity. Sharp and glossy copies are required. Reproductions of photographs already printed cannot be accepted.
9. Colour illustrations cannot usually be included, unless paid for by the author.

References
1. All references made to publications in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the information given in the text is exactly the same as that given in the reference list.
References to the literature should be made according to the numerical system described below.
2. In the text refer to the subject or to the author's name (without initial), followed by the reference number in square brackets.
3. If reference is made in the text to publications written by more than two authors, the name of the first author should be used, followed by "et al.". Note that in the reference list the names of authors and co-authors should be given in full.
4. References should be arranged in the order in which they appear in the text.
5. Use the following system for arranging the references:
(i) For journals
N. Levy, N. Garti and S. Magdassi, Colloids Surfaces A: Physiochem. Eng. Aspects, 97 (1995) 91.
(ii) For monographs
B.E. Conway, Ionic Hydration in Chemistry and Biophysics, Elsevier, Amsterdam, 1981.
(iii) For edited books
R.D. Thomas, in E. Buncel and J.R. Jones (Eds.), Isotopes in the Physical and Biomedical Sciences, Vol. 2, Elsevier, Amsterdam, 1991, Chapter 7.
(iv) For conference proceedings, symposia, etc. A.G. Marshall, in P.G. Kistemaker and N.M.M. Nibbering (Eds.), Advances in Mass Spectrometry, Proc. 12th International Mass Spectrometry Conference, Amsterdam, 26-30 August 1991, Elsevier, Amsterdam, 1992, p.37.
6. Abbreviations of journal titles should conform to those adopted by the Chemical Abstract Service (Bibliographic Guide for Editors and Authors, The American Chemical Society, Washington, DC, 1974). If the correct abbreviation is not known, the title should be given in full.
7. Reference to a personal communication should be followed by the year, e.g. A.N. Other, personal communication, 1989.

Formulae
1. Formulae should be typewritten, if possible. Leave ample space around the formulae.
2. Subscripts and superscipts should be clearly indicated.
3. Greek letters and other non-Latin or handwritten symbols should be explained in the margin where they are first used. Take special care to clearly show the difference between zero (0) and the letter O, and between one (1) and the letter 1.
4. Give the meanings of all symbols immediately after the equation in which they are first used.
5. For simple fractions use the solidus (/) instead of a horizontal.
6. Equations should be sequentially numbered (on the right-hand side of the equation and in parentheses). In general, only equations explicitly referred to in the text need be numbered.
7. The use of fractional powers instead of root signs is recommended. Also powers of e are often more conveniently denoted by exp.

Footnotes
1. Footnotes should only be used if absolutely essential.
2. If used, they should be indicated in the text by superscript numbers, and kept as short as possible.

Electronic manuscripts
Nowadays, most authors of scientific articles use word processors to prepare their manuscripts. Elsevier encourages authors to submit their articles to Separation and Purification Technology on floppy disk. To distinguish between traditional hard copy (paper) manuscripts and those submitted on floppy disk, the latter will be referred to as compuscripts.
Articles prepared using any of the most popular word-processing packages are acceptable, but please note the following points:
1. Please follow the general instructions for style and organization of a manuscript given above.
2. The disk should be formatted to be MS-DOS or Apple Macintosh compatible. Take care in the formatting of your disk (3.5" preferred) and ensure that only the relevant files are on it.
3. The names of the text files, the word-processing package and version used, together with the article title and authors' names, should be indicated on the disk.
4. Submit an original printout and two copies to one of the Editors (n.b. do not send your disk until your article has been accepted in final form). Since we cannot guarantee the usability of all formats, if the disk proves to be unusable, we will typeset your article using the hardcopy printout to avoid a delay in publication.
5. If no revision of your article is needed, send the original disk that contains only the files exactly matching your hard copies to the Editor as soon as your article is accepted.
6. If your paper requires revision, the original hardcopy will be returned to you by the Editor. The revisions must then be incorporated onto the disk. The revised disk, together with three revised hard copies, should then be resubmitted to the Editor.

Guide to Online Submission

Introduction

Welcome to the Elsevier online submission service. This service has been designed to be as easy as possible to use. Authors can upload their article as a LaTeX, Microsoft?(MS) Word?/I> or WordPerfect?/I>. It is also possible to submit an article in PostScript or Adobe?Acrobat?PDF format, but if the article is accepted it will be necessary to send in the original source files.

The system generates an Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the article which is used for the reviewing process. Authors, Reviewers and Editors send and receive all correspondence by e-mail and no paper correspondence is necessary. Note: articles are converted into PDF for the review process but may be edited after acceptance to follow journal standards.

What to submit?
Journal specific guidelines on types of article accepted and how to prepare your article can be found in the Author Gateway journal page, in the Guide for Authors.

File Formats
Word Processor Formats
Please submit your article as a file in one of the following formats:

  • MS Word 6
  • MS Word 97
  • MS Word 98 for Macintosh?
  • MS Word 2000
  • WordPerfect 6.1 or higher
  • RTF

Important notes on word processor file preparation

  • For review purposes you must submit your article as a SINGLE FILE. You need to embed all your figures and tables within this file.
  • Fonts: Please choose Times, Times New Roman, Courier, Arial or Helvetica fonts as much as possible. Other fonts (e.g. Chinese, Japanese and Korean (CJK) character fonts) may cause the PDF conversion to fail. If your manuscript does not correctly convert to PDF, replace the font(s) where necessary and try again.
  • Most formatting codes will be removed or replaced on processing your article so there is no need for you to apply excessive layout styling. In addition, avoid options such as automatic word breaking, justified layout, double columns, automatic paragraph numbering (especially for numbered references). However, do use bold face, italic, subscripts, superscripts, etc.
  • For the production of your article you will also have to submit your graphic files separately as high resolution graphics. (See also the section on Electronic Artwork below.)

LaTex
For general instructions on how to prepare an article using LaTeX, see the Latex file guidelines. In addition, please note the following:

  • Include all your graphics in the LaTeX file, e.g. with the \includegraphics from the graphics package.
  • Submit any special class (or style) files and other macro files with your article. We are using an up-to-date TeX installation (TeXLive5d), so you need not include any of the standard packages.

PDF
If possible, please submit the original LaTeX or word processor files: this website will take care of converting them into a PDF file.

If you wish to create your own PDF, download the ES_review.joboptions to the "Settings" folder of your Acrobat Distiller and choose the "ES_review" joboptions before converting your file.

Note: This joboptions file is for Adobe Distiller v4.05 and later. If you are still working with an older version, or if you need more help, see. PDF settings .

File naming
To avoid confusion, please make sure your file has a short, descriptive name. Short means less than 30 characters and descriptive means names like figure1.tif and smith-article-version1.doc.

Electronic Artwork
For the production of your paper in the journal we need high-resolution graphic files in either TIFF or EPS. For information on how to prepare your artwork for electronic submission, see http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork.

The online submission process

1.       Find the journal on the Author Gateway by searching or browsing

2.       Read the 'Guide for Authors' for specific instructions on submitting a paper to that journal

3.       Click on the 'online submisssion' link in the right hand journal services box

4.       Log in if you are already a registered user (if you are not already a registered user you need to 'create a profile' by submitting your contact details and choosing a username/password combination). This creates a completely secure environment to send your paper to us online.

5.       Once you are logged in you are taken to the Journal's submission page where you choose to 'Submit New Paper'. You are taken through the following steps:

                         i.            Enter data related to your manuscript (Title, Authors, Keywords etc.)

ii.            Choose the accepting Editor. (if the Journal has more than one Editor, you will find a drop-down list with the names of all the Editors of this Journal to whom you may submit your article. The journal Guide for Authors will give you more information on how to decide which Editor to choose)

iii.            Upload your manuscript file(s). See the section on File Formats for more information.

iv.            The website creates a PDF from your source file(s). You must check this PDF as it will be sent to the reviewers. If the PDF is not OK edit and resubmit your source file(s) or contacts author support for advice - PDF/PostScript source can be submitted as well as LaTeX/Word Processor files.

                       v.            Upload your figures separately for the production process and select how you want your figures to appear in print (colour or black and white). If the figures are too large (>5 Mb) you may send manually direct to the editor.

vi.            Check your submission details are correct and press submit to send your files to the journal editor

6.       You will receive an acknowledgement email to say the paper is under review

7.       Until the review process is completed you will not be able to update your submission from the website. If you have made a mistake you must contact the editor.

If revision is required:

1.       You will receive an email from the editor

2.       You can revise your paper by using the link in the email which takes you back to the online submission service (when revising your paper all the previous information is retained - no retyping is needed but it can be updated and new files attached). Alternatively you can access the paper directly from the Journal's online submission page or from 'my home' on the Author Gateway.

3.       Make any changes necessary and add or remove figures/other files

4.       A revised PDF is created which is sent to the editor at the end of the process and you receive an acknowledgement email

5.       Once your new version is submitted you will not be able to make any further revisions from the website

After submission
For information on the status of your article, please contact the Editor to whom you submitted your article. There is an email link to the editor in the journal's online submission service or on 'my home' in the Author Gateway.

Final decision:
You will receive an email containing the final decision of the Editor, containing editorial comments.

After acceptance
Once your paper has been accepted you can track its progress from your home page on the Author Gateway. It will automatically move from the 'Online Submissions' section of 'my home' to 'Accepted Papers'. From here you can view the progress of your paper through the production process to the final published article. We will also email you with the major milestones, including a direct link to your article when it appears on ScienceDirect. For more information on tracking go to Getting Published with Elsevier.
