About the journal
Scripta Materialia, the companion journal to Acta Materialia, is an International journal for the Science of Materials. Its purpose is to provide a medium for the rapid publication of cutting edge short papers which advance the understanding of structural, nanostructured, and functional materials, both crystalline and amorphous, across all materials classes. Emphasis is placed on those aspects of the science of materials that address: (i) the relationship between the microstructure of materials and their properties, including mechanical (from both the defect and continuum viewpoints), electrical, magnetic and chemical properties; (ii) the relationship between the microstructure of materials and the thermodynamics, kinetics and mechanisms of processes occurring within solids; (iii) the synthesis and processing of materials, with emphasis on microstructural mechanisms and control. (iv) advances in the characterization of the microstructure and properties of materials.
Scripta Materialia encourages the submission of letters of opinion, and of comments, particularly concerning work published in Acta Materialia and Scripta Materialia. The journal also publishes Viewpoint Sets, which are a series of short articles focused on topics of current interest within the scope of the journal and co-ordinated by invited editors.
Instructions to Authors
Introduction: Short, timely and cutting-edge reports will be considered for rapid publication in Scripta Materialia. Papers should be directed to those aspects of the science of materials defined in the scope presented on the inside front cover. Manuscripts must be written in good English. Poorly written papers will be automatically returned for rewriting before review.
Submission of papers. Papers should now be submitted electronically through www.actamat-journals.com. Prior to submitting your paper, please follow instructions given below. Back to the contents list
General guidelines for online submission: Elsevier Science can accept text files in most standard word-processing formats but Microsoft Word 97 is preferred. Alternatively, they can be in either PostScript or PDF format. Graphics should be high-resolution and the preferred formats are either TIFF or JPEG. For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork please refer to the following website: http://www.elsevier.com/locate/authorartwork.
Please follow the instructions below to for guidance on the style of the journal. Most formatting codes are removed or replaced when your article is prepared for publication so there is no need for you to use excessive layout styling. However, please do not use options such as automatic word breaking, justified layout, double columns or automatic paragraph numbering (especially for numbered references). Do use bold face, italic, subscripts, superscripts, etc., as appropriate. When preparing tables, if you are using a table grid, please use only one grid for each separate table and not a grid for each row. If no grid is being used, use tabs to align columns instead of spaces.
All online submissions must be accompanied by a covering letter detailing what you are submitting. Please indicate the author to whom correspondence should be addressed (in the case of multiple authors) and include a contact address, telephone/fax numbers and e-mail address. Please include details of any previous or concurrent submissions and also any information that will support your submission (e.g. original or confirmatory data, relevance, topicality). Please note that when your manuscript is received at Elsevier it is considered to be in its final form. Therefore you need to check your manuscript carefully before you submit it online. Limitations on length of papers: The maximum length of manuscripts is 6 journal pages. To conform with this page limit, please refer to the following guidelines: Back to the contents list
Calculating the length of the manuscript: Working on an average of 700 words per page the article should be no longer than 4200 words in total, including all text (title, abstract, figure legends, references, etc.). However if figures/tables or equations are being used, you need to subtract the equivalent number of words. These can be calculated as follows: For figures/tables one column wide (<7cm wide) allow 20 words per cm height. For example if you had a figure (to the scale in which it is to be published) of 10cm x 7cm (one column width), the total number of words this would be equivalent to is 200. For figures/tables two columns wide (<15cm wide) allow 40 words per cm height. For example if you had a figure (to the scale in which it is to be published) of 10cm x 15cm (two columns width), the total number of words this would be equivalent to is 400. Please allow 20 words for each equation used. To establish the number of text words required for a 6 page article, subtract the number of words calculated for each figure table and equation from 4200. As an example, the total number of text words left would be as follows:
Figure: 10cm x 15cm (column width) = 400 words Table: 8cm x 7cm (column width) = 160 words Equation: 20 words Remaining words available for text: 4200 - (400+160+20) = 3620 words.
The authors should supply, upon manuscript submission, the detail of the above estimation of the maximum number of words allowable for the text of their article, and supply the actual number of text words in their manuscript. Manuscripts exceeding this length will automatically be returned to the authors for shortening. In case of doubt regarding whether the article will meet the 6 printed page limit, authors are encouraged to prepare a camera-ready manuscript following the format of the current journal page. Please ensure that your manuscript is paginated, as this will help both editors and reviewers to process it promptly. Back to the contents list
Abstract: The text should start with a short abstract no longer than 4 lines and containing less than 50 words. Back to the contents list
Keywords: Authors should list a maximum of five keywords which appropriately represent the contents of their manuscripts. The list of keywords should appear on the title page of each paper, following the title, author names and author affiliations, placed in that order. The keywords must be selected from the Keywords List in the most recently published issue of the journal (also available here); however, authors may provide one keyword (out of five) which is not listed in the Keywords List. Back to the contents list
Units: SI units must be used exclusively. Use only standard SI symbols and abbreviations in text and illustrations. Back to the contents list
Figures: For electronic submission, all figures must be in digital form (minimum 300 dpi). Scale marks should be printed in all micrographs. Please see http://authors.Elsevier.com/locate/authorartwork for more information. Back to the contents list
Colour: If, together with your accepted article, you submit usable colour figures then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in colour on the web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether or not these illustrations are reproduced in colour in the printed version. For colour reproduction in print, the cost of printing in color, in 2002, will be US $425 per printed color page. You will receive information regarding the total costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please see http://www.elsevier.com/locate/authorartwork.
Please note: Because of technical complications which can arise from the conversion of colour figures to 'grey scale' (for the printed version should you not opt for colour in print) please submit in addition usable black and white prints corresponding to all the colour illustrations. Back to the contents list
References: References should be indicated in the text by consecutive numbers in parentheses, e.g. [1,2], as part of the text, with the full reference being cited in a numbered list at the end of the text. References should contain the names of the authors together with their initials, the title of the journal, volume number, first page number, and year, as illustrated below. References to books should contain the publisher's name and location.

Paper submissions by mail: Paper submissions by mail will be accepted temporarily; however, processing will be slower than for electronic submissions. To submit by mail, send an original and two copies of the manuscript, containing original and good quality micrographs respectively. Manuscripts submitted on paper must be formatted and submitted following the instructions given above. Authors should provide figures that need no reduction for printing. Preferably, figures should be prepared in single column size (7 cm in width). Scale marks should be printed in all micrographs. Digital images are encouraged (minimum 300 dpi). The corresponding author of a multiple-authored paper must sign upon submission a statement that all authors have agreed to the submission of the paper. All papers must be accompanied by a cover letter giving the author's affiliations and the corresponding author's fax number and e-mail address. The address for mail submission is: Scripta Materialia Office, c/o Prof. A.
