Instructions to Authors
Standard Abbreviations
Initial Manuscript Submission. Submit two copies of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) to one of the three co-editors: Professor Paul Griffiths, Editor-in-Chief, Department of Virology, Royal Free and University College Medical School, Royal Free Campus, Rowland Hill Street, London NW3 2PF; Dr Brian W. J. Mahy, US Editor, National Center for Infectious Diseases C12, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1600 Clifton Road NW, Atlanta, GA 30333, USA; Professor Yoshiyuki Nagai, Asia Editor, Toyama Institute of Health, Nakataikou-yama 17-1, Kosugi-machi, Imizu-gun, Toyama 939-0363, Japan.
Authors must also supply:
- an electronic copy of the final version (see section below),
- a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
- permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. Submitted material will not be returned to the author unless specifically requested.
Electronic submission. The electronic copy of the final, revised manuscript must be sent to the Editor together with the paper copy. Disks should be PC or Mac formatted; write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the journal. We are able to use most word processing packages, but prefer Word or WordPerfect. Illustrations must be submitted in electronic format where possible. Save each figure as a separate file, in TIFF or EPS format preferably, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint.
Manuscript Style. The language of the journal is English. All submissions including book reviews must have a title, be printed on one side of the paper, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 3cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text.
- The title page must list the full title, and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including email, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
- Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
- Supply a summary of up to 250 words for all articles, except the Classic papers. A summary should be of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and be understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.
- Standard abbreviations (published in each issue) can be used with out definition. All other abbreviations must be defined in the text on first use. Please supply a list of these abbreviations.
Reference Style. References should be cited by numbers in square brackets and listed at the end of the paper in the order in which they appear in the text. All references must be complete and accurate, and must use Index Medicus journal abbreviations. To check for correct abbreviations please see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/jrbrowser.cgi. On-line citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:
- Niederau C, Heintges TM, Lange S, et al. Long-term follow-up of HBeAg-positive patients treated with interferon alfa for chronic hepatitis B. N Engl J Med 1996; 334:1422-1427.
- Goodman J. Infections caused by herpes simplex viruses. In Infectious Diseases, Hoeprich P, Jordan C, Ronald A (eds). Lippincott: Philadelphia, 1994; 100-121.
- Black D. Introduction to Medicine. Basil Blackwell: Oxford, 1997;1-10.
- The Oncology Website. http://www.mit.com/oncology/ [24 April 1999].
Illustrations. Supply each illustration on a separate sheet. Write the lead author's name and the figure number on the reverse, and make sure that the top is clearly indicated. Supply original photographs; photocopies or previously printed material will not be used. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies). Tints are not acceptable. Lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. The artwork must be sized to the text width of 79mm/single column, 164mm/double column.
The cost of printing colour illustrations in the journal will be charged to the author at £600 per page. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley InterScience site.
Copyright. To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in each volume of Reviews in Medical Virology. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editor or publisher, or may be printed from this website.
Further Information. Proofs will be sent to the author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. If at any stage the Review does not conform to expectation it will be rejected. Note that commissioning does not guarantee publication. 25 complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.
