About the journal
Quality and Reliability Engineering International
Quality and Reliability Engineering International is a journal devoted to practical engineering aspects of quality and reliability. A refereed bimonthly technical journal, it covers the development and practical application of existing theoretical methods, research and industrial practices. Articles in the journal will be concerned with case studies, tutorial-type reviews and also with applications of new or well-known theory to the solution of actual quality and reliability problems in engineering. Papers describing the use of mathematical and statistical tools to solve real life industrial problems are encouraged, provided that the emphasis is placed on practical applications and demonstrated case studies. The scope of the journal is intended to include components, physics of failure, equipment and systems from the fields of electronic, electrical, mechanical and systems engineering. The areas of communications, aerospace, automotive, railways, shipboard equipment, control engineering and consumer products are all covered by the journal. Quality and reliability of hardware as well as software are covered. Papers on software engineering and its impact on product quality and reliability are encouraged. The journal will also cover the management of quality and reliability in the engineering industry. Special issues on a variety of key topics are published every year and contribute to the enhancement of Quality and Reliability Engineering International as a major reference in its field.

Instructions to Authors
Initial Manuscript Submission. Submit three copies of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) to one of the chief editors at the following addresses:
Finn Jensen FJRC Finn Jensen Reliability Consultancy Studio 4 Canal Warehouse Whipcord Lane, Chester CH1 4DG, U.K.
Douglas C. Montgomery Department of Industrial Engineering Arizona State University Tempe, AZ 85287-5906, U.S.A.
Authors must also supply:
- an electronic copy of the final version (see section below),
- a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
- permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. Submitted material will not be returned to the author unless specifically requested.
Electronic submission. The electronic copy of the final, revised manuscript must be sent to the Editor together with the paper copy. Disks should be PC or Mac formatted; write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the journal. We are able to use most word processing packages, but prefer Word or WordPerfect and TeX or one of its derivatives.
Illustrations must be submitted in electronic format where possible. Save each figure as a separate file, in TIFF or EPS format preferably, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint.
Manuscript style. The language of the journal is English. All submissions including book reviews must have a title, be printed on one side of the paper, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 3cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text. For articles, no maximum length of contribution is prescribed, but authors should write as concisely as possible. A section of 'Letters to the Editor' each limited to 1000 words provides a forum for the discussion of recent problems.
- The title page must list the full title, short title of up to 60 characters, and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including email, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
- Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
- Supply a summary of up to 200 words for all articles [except book reviews]. It should be a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and should be understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.
- Include up to eight keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes.
- Include also a brief biography of each author.
Reference style. References should be cited by numbers within square brackets and listed at the end of the paper in the order in which they appear in the text. All references must be complete and accurate. Online citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:
- Pecht M, Dasgupta A, Barker D. The reliability physics approach to failure prediction modeling. Quality and Reliability Engineering International 1990 6: 273-276.
- Kuo W, Chien WTK, Kim T. Reliability, Yield and Stress Burn-in; Kluwer: Norwell, MA, 1988; pp 35-70.
Illustrations. Supply each illustration on a separate sheet, with the lead author's name and the figure number, and the top of the figure indicated, on the reverse. The amount of lettering on drawings should be reduced as far as possible by transferring it to the caption. Supply original photographs; photocopies or previously printed material will not be used. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies). Tints are not acceptable - hatching should be used instead; lettering must be of a reasonable size that would be clearly legible upon reproduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Supply artwork at the intended size for printing, maximum size 155 mm ??210 mm.
The cost of printing colour illustrations in the journal will be charged to the author. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley InterScience site.
Copyright. To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in one issue of each volume of Quality and Reliability Engineering International. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editor or publisher, or may be printed from this website.
Further Information. Proofs will be sent to the author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. Twenty-five complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered on an offprint order form which will accompany the proofs. There is no page charge to authors.
