About the journal
Progress in Quantum Electronics

Progress in Quantum Electronics is an international review journal devoted to the dissemination of new, specialized topics at the forefront of quantum electronics and its applications. The journal publishes papers dealing with theoretical or experimental aspects of contemporary research such as advances in the physics, technology and engineering of subjects of relevance to quantum electronics.
Authors are encouraged to write articles of relevance to a wide readership including both those established in this field of research and non-specialists working in related areas.

Instructions to Authors
Introduction Progress in Quantum Electronics is published six times a year. Potential authors are invited to submit brief descriptions of proposed articles to one of the Editors, prior to the preparation of full-length manuscripts.
Editors: Professor P.T. Landsberg, Faculty of Mathematical Studies, University of Southampton, Highfield, Southampton SO17 1BJ, UK; Fax: +44 23 8059 5147; E-mail: ptl@maths.soton.ac.uk
Professor M. Osinski, Center for High Technology Materials, University of New Mexico, 1313 Goddard SE, Albuquerque, NM 87106, USA; Fax: +1 505 277 7245; E-mail: osinski@chtm.eece.unm.edu.

To qualify for publication, articles must be previously unpublished and not be under consideration for publication elsewhere. To ensure the widest readership, papers must be written in English.. For authors who regard English as a foreign language, it is essential to have it checked most carefully by a good English speaker, who should also ensure that the correct technical terms are used.
Preparation of Manuscript Authors are urgently requested to ensure they comply with these recommendations.
Articles should be reasonably self-contained, but they should not repeat material readily found in textbooks. At the same time they should be pedagogical in the sense that relatively new ideas and formulae are explained so that they can be understood by someone not working in precisely the field of the article. There must be a good subdivision into sections to aid a reader with special interest in only one or two sections. The connection of the subject matter, if not obvious, with quantum electronics should be made clear in the first section.
General: Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper and be submitted in triplicate. Spelling should follow the shorter Oxford English Dictionary or in the case of American authors Webster's New International Dictionary. Good quality printouts with a font size of 12 or 10 pt are required. The corresponding author should be identified (include a Fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. All pages should be numbered consecutively in the top right-hand corner. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible. An electronic copy of the paper should accompany the final version. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication.
Text: Follow this order when in the manuscript: Title, Author(s), Affiliation(s), Abstract, Keywords and PACS codes, Contents List, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Figure Captions and then Tables. Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text (see below).
Abstract: An abstract should precede the text, giving a brief account of the most relevant aspects of the paper (100-200 words).
Keywords: Please supply one or more PACS-1999 codes and up to 5 keywords of your own choice in order to indicate the main topics discussed in the paper and to provide basic terms for indexing. PACS codes can be looked up at our web page http://www.elsevier.nl/locate/pacs.
Contents List: A contents list should precede the article.
Footnotes: The use of footnotes is discouraged. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes if required (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers.
Abbreviations and Units: Figures should always be used for quantities connected with units (e.g. 10 cm, 5.5 kg). Decimals, not fractions should be used with metric units. SI units are preferred. In the text, the greatest care must be taken to observe consistency in the use of abbreviations for units and other expressions.
Symbols: All special symbols (including vectors) must be identified. It is not always possible for the publisher to sort them out with complete accuracy. Authors are advised to use the simplest possible notation, and to avoid obscure or multi-accented letters which might have to be especially manufactured, resulting in delays.
Headings: Headings and sub-headings should be arranged to follow a consistent pattern in the typescript indicating their relative orders of importance, and are best distinguished from the rest by underlining.
References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to references by a number in square brackets on the line (e.g. Since Akhmanov [1]), and the full reference should be given in a numerical list at the end of the paper. Please do not give excessive citations which would detract from the essential earlier papers, and always also bear in mind, both in subject matter and references, earlier articles in Progress in Quantum Electronics. [1] S.A. Akhmanov, in: F.T. Arechi (Ed.), Laser Handbook, North-Holland, Amsterdam, 1972, p. 115. [2] R.G. Brewer, J.R. Lifshitz, Physics Letters 23 (1967) 79. [3] V. Vedral, M.B. Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet. Line drawings: Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations. Photographs: Photographs are expensive to reproduce and should only be included when they undoubtedly contribute to a better understanding of the text. Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable. Colour: Figures may be published in colour, if this is judged essential by the editor. Authors will be charged for colour at current printing costs.
Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).
Electronic submission Authors should submit an electronic copy of their paper with the final version of the manuscript. The electronic copy should match the hardcopy exactly. Always keep a backup copy of the electronic file for reference and safety. Full details of electronic submission and formats can be obtained from http://www.elsevier.nl/locate/disksub or from Author Services at Elsevier Science.
Proofs Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofs are to be returned to: Log-in Department, Elsevier Science, Stover Court, Bampfylde Street, Exeter, Devon EX1 2AH, UK.
Offprints Twelve copies of the issue will be supplied free of charge. Additional copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted.
Copyright All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Science Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, without the author relinquishing his/her proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of a similar nature, and translations.
