About the journal
Physical Therapy
Physical Therapy accepts a manuscript for consideration with the understanding that the manuscript, including any original research findings or data reported in it, has not been published previously and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, whether in print or electronic form. Reports of secondary analyses of data sets should specify the source of the data.

Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts submitted to Physical Therapy should address issues of relevance to physical therapy and should do so in accordance with submission guidelines. The Editor in Chief reserves the right to return, without review, any manuscript that does not meet Journal criteria. All submissions accepted for peer review are privileged communications. Author identity is kept confidential from reviewers, unless otherwise indicated. All correspondence is sent to the author who submits the article.
Authors should use their judgment in determining whether statements of hypotheses are necessary. The Journal welcomes papers that contribute to the literature, even if they report statistically nonsignificant findings. Authors of such papers should pay particular attention to the need to (1) justify the study, (2) make a case as to why the alternative hypothesis was viable before data were collected, and (3) address the possibility of a Type II statistical error. The reliability and validity of measurements used must be documented. Authors should specifically define all variables.
What Type of Manuscript Are You Submitting?
A manuscript is considered for review by Physical Therapy if it fits into one of the following categories of peer-reviewed articles:
Case Report: A report describing any element of practice not previously documented in the literature. Most case reports focus on a patient or a group of patients, but they also can focus on institutions, facilities, education programs, clinical sites, or other definable units. Issues addressed may include patient management, ethical dilemmas, use of equipment or devices, or administrative strategies. References are needed to support rationales and approaches. Author should supply a one-sentence description of the case in addition to an abstract. Extensive reviews of the literature are not appropriate. Type of review: Review by Editor for Case Reports. Masked review by 2-3 reviewers and 1 Editorial Board member.
Research Report: Any original research, regardless of the methods used. Included in this category are research using quantitative or qualitative methods and research using single-subject designs. Type of review: Masked review by 2-3 reviewers and 1 Editorial Board member.
Technical Report: An original report that describes and documents the specifications or mechanical aspects of a device used by physical therapy practitioners in intervention or measurement. Evaluation of the device should be part of the report. References should be minimal, with major emphasis on the description of the methods used to evaluate the device. Type of review: Masked review by 2-3 reviewers and 1 Editorial Board member.
Literature Review: A critical analysis of literature on a specific topic of interest to physical therapists, written by acknowledged experts and by invitation only. Although the review may further a viewpoint or a theoretical approach, this should not be the major purpose of the paper. Authors may nominate themselves through communication with the Editor in Chief; forward your CV along with a cover letter to the Managing Editor. Type of review: Nonmasked review by 2-3 reviewers and 1 Editorial Board member.
Perspective: A scholarly paper expounding on a specific clinical approach to patient care (on either a theoretical or practical basis) or addressing professional issues in physical therapy, health care, and related areas, written by acknowledged experts and by invitation only. Authors may nominate themselves through communication with the Editor in Chief; forward your CV along with a cover letter to the Managing Editor. References should be sufficiently extensive to support the opinions put forth in the paper. Type of review: Nonmasked review by 2-3 reviewers and 1 Editorial Board member.
Update: A brief review of a topic of importance to physical therapy practice. Updates are highly focused and supported by the scientific literature. They do not present new data or perspectives or involve application to specific patients or groups of patients. Although references are required, extensive reviews of the literature are not appropriate. If literature is scarce on a given topic, the author may want to consider writing a case report. Length: Up to 12 double-spaced pages (not including references). No abstract required. Type of review: Review by Editor for Updates. Nonmasked review by at least 1 content expert.
Evidence in Practice: An article that uses a patient example to illustrate how evidence is gathered and used to guide clinical decision making. The article focuses on a single clinical question to illustrate how online technology can be used to find evidence regarding the effectiveness of interventions or other aspects of patient management. Extensive reviews of the literature are not appropriate. Authors may nominate themselves through communication with the Editor for Evidence in Practice. Type of review: Review by Editor for Evidence in Practice and an Editorial Advisor. Nonmasked or masked review by 1-2 content experts.
Exclusivity and Duplicate Publication
Physical Therapy accepts a manuscript for consideration for exclusive publication with the understanding that the manuscript¡ªincluding any original research findings or data reported in it¡ªhas not been published previously and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, whether in print or electronic form. Reports of secondary analyses of data sets should specify the source of the data.
Physical Therapy discourages authors from submitting more than one manuscript on related aspects of the same study. However, if a related manuscript has been or will be published by or submitted to another journal or to Physical Therapy, we ask authors to upload a copy of that manuscript when they are submitting their current article.
If authors violate this policy or engage in other misconduct, the Editor in Chief reserves the right to reject the manuscript and may refer the matter to the author¡¯s academic institution or other appropriate entity.
Prior Disclosure
Prior disclosure of any part of the contents of any manuscript in a widespread and substantive form, print or electronic, may make the manuscript ineligible for publication in Physical Therapy. Note: Publication of abstracts and presentations at meetings do not constitute prior disclosure. During the submission process, you will be prompted to indicate whether your manuscript has been presented orally at a scientific meeting or at a professional forum. Authors who need clarification of this policy should contact the Managing Editor before releasing or distributing information from the manuscript that they want to submit.
Copyright
Authors agree to execute copyright transfer as requested during the submission process. Authors will be prompted to upload a signed copyright release form. Manuscripts published in Physical Therapy become the property of APTA and may not be published elsewhere, in whole or in part, in print or electronic form, without the written permission of APTA, which has the right to use, reproduce, transmit, derivate, publish, and distribute the contribution, in the Journal or otherwise, in any form or medium.
Commercial/Financial Associations and Conflict of Interest
All funding sources supporting the work should be acknowledged. During the submission process, authors will be required to enter this information. They also will be prompted to upload a disclosure statement, signed by all authors. This information will be held in confidence by the Editor in Chief during the review process and, if the paper is accepted for publication, will be shared with readers as appropriate.
Permissions
Protection of participants. During the submission process, authors of Research Reports will be asked to provide the name of the institutional review board, institutional animal care and use committee, or other similar body that approved the study. Within the manuscript, authors must include a statement in the "Method" section that they obtained informed consent of participants, when required for protection of human subjects. If patients would be able to recognize themselves in the report, authors of Case Reports should document patients¡¯ consent. In addition, Case Report authors should include a statement about meeting the HIPAA (Health Insurance and Portability and Accountability Act) requirements of the institution for disclosure of protected health information.
Photograph release. Authors must obtain and submit written permission to publish photographs in which subjects are recognizable. This statement must be signed by the subject, parent, or guardian. You will be prompted to upload this statement during the submission process.
Reprinted tables and figures. Authors must obtain and submit written permission from the original sources, in the name of APTA, to publish illustrations, photographs, figures, or tables taken from those sources. Authors will be prompted to upload these permissions during the submission process.
Manuscript Preparation
For format and reference style, consult the American Medical Association [AMA] Manual of Style, 9th ed, published by Williams & Wilkins (Baltimore, Md). Do not use AMA style to format tables; instead, refer to recent issues of Physical Therapy.
Physical Therapy adheres to the use of "people-first" language. A subject should not be referred to by disability or condition (eg, "patients with stroke," not "stroke patients"), and terms that could be considered biasing or discriminatory in any way should be removed.
All manuscripts must be formatted double-spaced, with pages numbered. Fifteen pages or fewer are preferred. Use a 10- or 12-point font. State the purpose in the introduction. Refer to recent issues for examples of acceptable text headings. Remember that most manuscripts undergo a masked review process; therefore, avoid mention of author names or affiliations within the article.
If the manuscript is not submitted in the proper format, the review process may be delayed until the format is corrected.
Manuscript elements:
Titles of articles should not be general or vague and should reflect measured variables. Instead of using "physical therapy" to refer to the intervention used in your study, use a more specific term (eg, "strengthening exercises").
Abstract of 150 words or fewer. Remember to double space. Research Report and Technical Report abstracts should include the following major headings: Background and Purpose, Subjects, Methods, Results, and Discussion and Conclusion. Abstracts for other types of papers should include purpose, summary of key points, and conclusions or recommendations. Abstracts for Case Reports should include Background and Purpose, Case Description, Outcomes, and Discussion. (Abstracts are not published with Updates.)
Do not include author names and affiliations on your title and abstract page! This information will be captured in designated fields when you submit your paper online.
Acknowledgments and funding sources. Please include your acknowledgments and information about your funding sources in your cover letter.
Manufacturer's information in a footnote for all equipment and products mentioned in the text. Place at bottom of the page on which the item is mentioned, include full address with ZIP code, and use consecutive symbols (*, †, ‡, ¡ì, ||, #, **, ††, ‡‡, ¡ì¡ì, ||||, ##).
Measurements, expressed using the International System of Units. (English units may be given in parentheses.)
References, indicated by numerical superscripts that appear consecutively in the text. Please do NOT use programs such as End Notes, as that may cause loss of data in the uploading of the manuscript. Present references in consecutive order on a separate sheet at the end of the manuscript. Follow AMA style for references, with the following exception: In the reference list, include all authors' names for works with up to four authors; if there are five or more authors, list the first three names followed by "et al." Cite the reference number in the text each time an author is mentioned. Use Index Medicus for journal abbreviations. References should be listed in the order of appearance in the manuscript, not in alphabetical order.
Tables should be numbered consecutively and placed together in a separate file. Refer to recent issues for acceptable table formats.
Figures should be numbered consecutively and placed together in a separate file. Type all legends on one sheet. Line drawings, graphs, and charts can be submitted in various formats. Lettering should be large, sharp, and clear, and abbreviations used within figures should agree with Journal style. Color photographs are permissible, in sharp focus and with good contrast.
Appendixes should be numbered consecutively and placed at the end of the paper. Use appendixes to provide essential material not suitable for figures, tables, or text.
Reprints
Authors are invited to order reprints of their articles. A reprint order form is sent to the corresponding author at the time of publication, along with a copy of the issue in which the article appears. Readers should contact the corresponding author of the article to obtain reprints.
Ready to Submit
At Physical Therapy Manuscript Central, you will be prompted to enter data into 10 screens and then will upload your manuscript. Technical assistance is available by clicking on an icon; you also may contact Karen Darley or Jan Reynolds if you have any questions.
