About the journal

 ORGANISMS DIVERSITY & EVOLUTION

Organisms, Diversity and Evolution is published by the Gesellschaft fr Biologische Systematik (GfBS) and the Urban & Fischer Verlag. The journal consists of a printed version and an electronic supplement. It is devoted to the understanding of organismal diversity and addresses an international audience. Manuscripts should be written in English.

The journal accepts four kinds of papers:

  • papers for a news section reserved for discussion, and up-to-date reports about the development of national and international science policies as far as relevant to research in biological systematics.
  • review papers

  • original research papers of high quality of systematic, phylogenetic and evolutionary contents on all organismal groups, recent and fossil. Papers emphasizing general aspects of systematic, phylogenetic and evolutionary research, having a widely integrative approach, or dealing with interorganismal relationships will be preferred. Species descriptions will be accepted as part of manuscripts with information of general interest. Additional information to printed papers (e.g. sequence alignments, colour plates, videos, 3D-illustrations, etc.) can be published in electronic form.
  • purely taxonomic papers to be published in the electronic supplement by GfBS. Extended abstracts of these publications will be contained in the printed journal. The electronic supplement is available on the internet (http://www.senckenberg.de/odes) independent of the printed journal to everyone interested and will be permanently preserved on an archive-server of the Deutsche Bibliothek / Frankfurt am Main (http://deposit.ddb.de).

Manuscripts submitted to the journal and to the electronic supplement will be subjected to critical peer review.

Instructions to Authors

Papers submitted for publication in ODE should deal with real taxa (be it at the species or at a higher systematic level) and should include comparative aspects. Papers on theoretical aspects of systematics are also welcome. Exclusively descriptive and/or taxonomic works will usually be published in the electronic supplement without consideration of the number of pages. Papers may appear as original scientific papers, as "Scientific Notes", or as "Views & News". All manuscripts will be peer-refereed. Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate to the Chief Editor dealing with the respective taxon (see list of Chief-Editors). Final acceptance of items for publication is the responsibility of the corresponding Chief-Editor. Manuscripts not compatible with the following guidelines will not be sent to reviewers.

Manuscript preparation. Manuscripts must be written in English and not exceed 20 printed pages (approx. 60 manuscript pages or 112.000 bytes). Non-native speakers should ask a native speaker for help in preparing their manuscripts

Manuscripts must be typed, double-spaced (including footnotes, figure captions, references etc.) on standard A4 (or 8.5" x 11") paper with a 2.5 cm margin all around. Please submit the original manuscript and two complete copies. After a manuscript has been accepted for publication a version on computer diskette (see disk submission instructions below) will be welcome. Details can be obtained from the Managing Editor and at http://www.urbanfischer.de/journals/ode.

Manuscripts should be organized as follows: Title, Author(s), Address(es), Abstract (in English, max. 300 words), Key words (max. 6), Text, Acknowledgements, References, Appendix, Tables (each with an Arabic numeral and with a heading), Figure Captions, Figures (separately numbered and identified). All pages should be numbered consecutively. Footnotes should be avoided. Do not for any reason use upper case letters for entire words. You may use italics in the text or underline where italics are intended. Measurements should always be given in the metric system and carried out to the same decimal, i.e. 5.3-6.0 mm (not: 5.3-6 mm). All illustrations must be referred to in the text. Additional information such as original data, alignments and color plates can be submitted for publication in the electronic appendix (see disk submission instructions).

DNA/RNA sequences must be deposited in gene-bank and the paper must include the respective accession number.

Scientific Names. The systematic position of taxa listed in the title must be indicated (e.g.: Lepidoptera: Zygaenidae). Only genus and species names should be printed in italics followed by the author of the taxon when first mentioned.

References. Cited works should be referred to as follows: Schrimpler (1993), Schmidt & Meier (1991), Tremewan et al. (1977) for three or more authors. All authors of a paper should be cited in the list of references. References "in press" shall only be cited when they have been accepted for publication. Names of persons who provide unpublished information should include initials in the text, e.g. (W. F. Miller, pers. comm. 1967 [for information obtained orally]) or (J. J. Jacobs, in litt. 1993) [for information obtained in writing]).
List references alphabetically by author under References. Do not italicize or underline words in titles other than genus group and species group names. The World List of Scientific Periodicals should be strictly followed for abbreviations of names of the periodicals.

Examples
Maschwitz, U., Dumpert, K. & Sebastian, P. (1985): Morphological and behavioural adaptations of homopterophagous Blues (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae). Entomologia Gen. 11: 85-90.

Wright, C. A. & Southgate, V. R. (1981): Coevolution of digeneans and molluscs, with special reference to schistosomes and their intermediate hosts. Pp. 191-205 in: Forey, P. L. (ed.) The Evolving Biosphere. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge.

Minelli, A. (1993): Biological Systematics - the State of the Art. xvi+387 pp., Chapman & Hall, London etc.

Nomenclature. Taxonomic information must conform to the requirements of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature and the Code of Botanical Nomenclature, or the Bacterial Code, newest edition. Specimens belonging to type material must be indicated in the text and labelled appropriately.

Illustrations. Mount originals for line drawings and halftones on heavy paper. Submit two clear copies of all illustrations for reviewers and the originals. Grouped illustrations should be mounted in the same proportions (length and width = 1.29:1) as the printed part of the page (171 x 225 mm; column width: 83 mm), but allow enough space for the figure caption. Figure numbers should be neat, uniform, and scaled to 4-6 mm after reduction. Place plate number, the author's name and indication of top on the back of each plate. Halftones should be photographic prints of high contrast on glossy paper. If two or more photographs are on a single plate, they must be mounted with edges touching (i.e. trim off all white edges of photographs).
Figure numbers for photographs should be placed on a white circle. Always indicate the absolute size by a scale bar with the length stated. Do not mix drawings and halftones on the same plate. For best results illustrations should not be reduced to less than 1/3 of original size.

Figure Captions. Figure captions should be submitted on a separate page and placed after References. They should be concise, precise guides to the interpretation of each figure. Coloured illustrations can be printed only if part of the costs are covered by the author (DM 900,- per plate and page).

Digital images see disk instructions.

Tables
Tables should be typed double-spaced on separate sheets. They should have a brief descriptive title and be self-explanatory. Tables should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals as they are mentioned in the text. No vertical rules should be used. Explanatory material and footnotes should be inserted below the table and designated with lowercase letters in the order in which they are referenced in the table.

Scientific Notes, Views & News. These should not exceed one printed page (including illustrations). Organize manuscripts for Scientific Notes as follows: Title, Author Name(s), Text, Acknowledgements, References, Address(es), Tables, Figure Captions, Figures.

Reprints. Authors will receive 25 reprints free of charge; members of the GfBS can order 25 additional reprints free of charge. Additional reprints may be purchased by ordering when page proofs are returned.

Questions we ask our reviewers
Authors preparing manuscripts for ODE should keep in mind the following questions which referees for the journal are asked:

Is the paper of interest to systematic (incl. taxonomic) or evolutionary biologists?
Is it substantial and novel enough to justify publication?
Would the reader easily grasp the significance of the work from the introduction and discussion?
Do the conclusions follow from the information presented?
Can the paper be made clearer and more concise?
Could the title be shortened or made more informative?
Does the abstract indicate the methods used and the important results?
Are alternative interpretations sufficiently considered?
Are contents and length of the paper well balanced?
Are there any important references to the subject that have not been considered?
Are all tables and illustrations necessary?
Are the tables and figures sufficient?

Disk Submission Instructions

The Journal strongly encourages authors to deliver the final, revised version of their accepted manuscript (text, tables, and, if possible, illustrations) on disk.

Storage medium. 3-1/2" high-density disk in IBM MS-DOS, Windows, or (less preferred) MacIntosh format. For digital images use CD-ROMs.

Software. Microsoft Word is preferred, although manuscripts prepared with any other microcomputer word processor are acceptable. Do not use desktop publishing software such as Adobe PageMaker or Quark XPress If you prepared your manuscript with one of these programs, export the text to a word processing format. Please make sure your word processing program's "fast save" feature is turned off.

Format. Refrain from complex formatting; the Publisher will style your manuscript according to the Journal design specifications.

File names. Submit the text and tables of each manuscript as a single file. Name each file with your last name (up to eight letters). Text files should be given the three-letter extension that identifies the file format. MacIntosh users should maintain the MS-DOS "eight dot three" file-naming convention.

Illustrations. Submit as separate files from text files, on separate diskette or cartridges. If feasible, full color files should be submitted on separate disks from other image files, and all print reproduction requires files for full color images to be in a CMYK color space. 3-1/2" high-density diskettes, CD, Iomega Zip, and 5 1/4" 44- or 88-MB SyQuest cartridges can be submitted. At authors' request, cartridges and diskettes will be returned after publication. All illustration files should be in TIFF or EPS (with preview) formats. Do not submit native application formats. Journal quality reproduction will require greyscale and color files at resolutions yielding approximately 300 ppi. Bitmapped line art should be submitted at resolutions yielding 600-1200 ppi. These resolutions refer to the output size of the file; if you anticipate that your images will be enlarged or reduced, resolutions should be adjusted accordingly. Illustration files should be given the 2- or 3-letter extension that identifies the file format used (i.e., .tif, .eps).

Labels. Label all disks with your name, the file name, and the word processing program and version used.

Paper copy. The disk must be accompanied by hard copy printout. If the disk and paper copy differ, the paper copy will be used for typesetting and this may delay publication of the article. Once the paper has been accepted, firm quotes will be supplied by the publisher, and the author will have the opportunity to approve both costs and proofs prior to printing. Color prints, transparencies, zip disks, and CD-ROMs are acceptable for reproduction. The frame of the transparency should be marked to indicate the area that can safely be cropped to arrive at the critical image that is to appear in the final printing.
