Instructions to Authors

Submission of Papers

Authors are encouraged to submit their articles online via the electronic submission website http://www.elsubmit.com/esubmit/ndt. Several electronic formats are acceptable. In the manuscript for review, figures and tables must be embedded into the text. Figures must also be supplied separately as high-resolution files. An electronic (PDF) proof is generated and the reviewing process is carried out using that PDF. Authors and editors send and receive all correspondence by e-mail and no paper correspondence is performed. However, authors are legally obliged to sign and return a physical copyright transfer form by conventional mail. Full details can be obtained from the submission website.
[Note: online submissions are used to generate a PDF file for the review process but may be edited after acceptance to follow journal standards. It is important that all graphical and tabular elements be placed within the text, this will allow the preferred position of placement to be indicated; however, please note that due to journal conventions, it may not be possible to meet all requirements for placement of artwork.]

Authors can also submit their original manuscript and figures with two copies to the appropriate Editor. Editor-in-Chief - The Americas, Prof. D.E. Chimenti, Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics Department, 2019 Black Engineering, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa 50011, USA; Regional Editor - Asia and Pacific, Dr D.C. Price, CSIRO Telecommunications & Industrial Physics, PO Box 218, Lindfield, NSW 207, Australia; Regional Editor - Europe, Africa, Middle East, Dr G. Dobmann, Fraunhofer IzfP, Universität Gebaude 37, 66123 Saarbrücken, Germany, or Book Review Editor, Dr R. Hill, The Nottingham Trent University, Department of Chemistry and Physics, Clifton Lane, Nottingham NG11 8NS, UK.

Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher. A statement to this effect should be included in the covering letter which accompanies the manuscript. However, translated material, which has not been published in English, will also be considered - please contact the Editors for more details.

Review Process
All contributions are read by two or more referees to ensure both accuracy and relevance, and revisions to the script may thus be required. On acceptance contributions are subject to editorial amendment to suit house style. When a manuscript is returned for revision prior to final acceptance, the revised version must be submitted as soon as possible after the author's receipt of the referees' reports. Revised manuscripts returned after four months will be considered as new submissions subject to full re-review.

Types of Contributions
Contributions falling into the following categories will be considered for publication. Original high-quality research papers (preferably no more than 20 double line spaced manuscript pages including tables and illustrations). Short communications for rapid publication (no more than 10 double line spaced manuscript pages including tables and figures). NDT&E International also publishes book reviews, conference reports and a calendar of forthcoming events. Contributions of this type should be sent to the Publishing Editor.

Manuscript Preparation
General:
You should write in clear and concise English. Spelling should follow the Oxford English Dictionary. Authors whose native tongue is not English are assured that in-house editorial attention to their contributions will improve clarity and acceptability to readers. Four copies of each article are required. Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. Good quality printouts with a font size of 12 or 10 pt are required. Please number every sheet of paper. The corresponding author should be identified (include a Fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible. An electronic copy of the paper should accompany the final version. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return original material after use.

Abstracts: Self-contained abstract of approximately 100 words, outlining in a single paragraph the aims, scope and conclusions of the paper; one to five keywords, for indexing purposes taken from the list appearing at the back of each issue.

Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Figure Captions and then Tables. Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers. Note that trade names should have an initial capital letter.

Units and Abbreviations: All measurements and data should be given in SI units, or if SI units do not exist, in an internationally accepted unit. If you use any symbol or unit that may not be generally recognized, please include an explanatory footnote the first time it is used, to help the referees, editors and readers. It is also helpful to identify Greek symbols by name in the margin the first time they appear. Abbreviations and acronyms should only be used for unwieldy terms and names which occur frequently in the manuscript. Abbreviations should be used consistently throughout the text, and must be clearly defined in full on first use.

Mathematical and Technical Setting: Detailed mathematical discussion should be placed in an appendix. Equations and formulae should be typewritten wherever possible. Equations should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in parentheses on the right hand side of the page. Special symbols should be identified in the margin, and the meaning of all symbols should be explained in the text where they first occur. If you use several symbols, a list of definitions (not necessarily for publication) will help the editor. Type or mark mathematical equations exactly as they should appear in print. Journal style for letter symbols is as follows: variables, Italic type (indicated by underlining); constants, roman type; matrices and vectors, bold type (indicated by wavy underlining).

References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to references by a number in square brackets on the line, e.g. Since Peterson[1], and full references should be given in a numerical list at the end of the paper.

References should be given in the following form:

Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet. Please ensure that all illustrations within a paper are consistent in style and quality. A table is usually more effective than a graph or a paragraph of text for recording data.
Graphs and line drawings: Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.
The minimum amount of descriptive text should be used on graphs and drawings; label curves, etc. with single-letter symbols (i.e. a, b, c, etc.) and place descriptive matter in the figure caption. Scale grids should not be used in graphs unless required for actual measurements. Graph axes should be labelled with the variable written out in full, along the length of the axis, with the unit in parentheses (for example, Length of sample (mm)). Lower case letters should be used throughout, with an initial capital letter for the first word only.
Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Colour reproduction is available if the author is willing to bear the additional incremental reproduction and printing costs. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.
Colour illustrations: It is the policy of NDT&E International to encourage all authors to submit their graphical results in the form of black and white figures or drawings. On rare occasions it may be necessary for authors to express their results in a way that depends critically on colour. When this option cannot be avoided, the Elsevier Science policy on colour work will apply.
Colour illustrations will be approved for publication only if, in the opinion of the Editors, the figures cannot convey the necessary information in monochrome, nor can they be redrawn to do so. Colour reproduction is available in exceptional cases if the author is willing to bear the additional costs of reproduction and printing. Please contact Author Services at Elsevier Science for details.

Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).

Disk Submission
Authors should submit a disk copy of their paper with the final version of the manuscript. The disk copy should match the hardcopy exactly.
Always keep a backup copy of the disk file for reference and safety. Full details of disk submission and formats can be obtained from Author Services at Elsevier Science.

Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofs are to be returned to the Log-in Department of the relevant Elsevier Science site.

Offprints
Twenty-five offprints and a copy of the issue will be supplied free of charge. Offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints will incur a 50% surcharge.

Copyright
All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Science Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but does not relinquish the author's proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations. Includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any figures for which copyright exists.

Author Enquiries
Authors can keep a track on the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway.
