About the journal
Information conveyed graphically helps fix difficult concepts in the mind, but animation is an important additional dimension enabling an understanding of data that is virtually impossible to obtain viewing still images. The advent of faster and cheaper machines has accelerated the growth of scientific visualization whereby scientists can turn mountains of numbers into movies and display measurements of physical variables in space and time.
The field of Computer Animation is interdisciplinary and attracts those working in the science and arts applying animation techniques. The range of topics to be covered in the Journal will include scenario-making right through to the post production stage.
This Journal aims not only to publish research papers on the technological developments (both hardware and software) that will make animation tools more accessible to end-users. It will also publish on new application areas for animation films and will commission and encourage submissions of case studies to demonstrate to film makers what techniques have previously been drawn on and their results. Critiques of films and book reviews are also welcomed.
The journal contains three main sections:
- Research papers
This is the main section. It will cover research papers on innovative areas in Computer Animation.
- Film case studies, critics and software
In this section, authors will describe their work on the making of new computer-generated films. Showing how to make new innovative films, from the beginning (scenario) to the end (film or video with sound), will be the aim of this section and selected films will also be analysed and evaluated in detail according to both artistic and scientific criteria. This section is also open to commercial software for visualization and animation.
- Calendar of events, calls for papers and films
This section will provide information about the main events to come such as conferences, workshops, and festivals of computer-generated work throughout the world.
The Journal of Visualization and Computer Animation seeks papers in all fields of scientific visualization and computer animation. Contributions are solicited describing original research results and applications and experience in the following areas:

Instructions to Authors
Initial Manuscript Submission. - Submit two paper copies of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) to one of the two editors-in-chief:
Prof. Nadia Magnenat-Thalmann, MIRALab CUI, University of Geneva, 24 rue du G¨¦n¨¦ral-Dufour, CH 1211 Geneva 4, Switzerland
Prof. Daniel Thalmann, Computer Graphics Lab, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), CH-1015 Lausanne, Switzerland
Authors must also supply:
- an electronic copy of the final version (see section below),
- a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature (without the original signature, we are unable to accept the submission), signed by at least the first author,
- permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts, using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.
- any video or visual that can be added to the Journal website.
Submission of a manuscript will be held to imply that it contains original unpublished work and is not being submitted for publication elsewhere at the same time. Submitted material will not be returned to the author, unless specifically requested.
Electronic submission. Electronic submissions of papers have to be sent to the Editor by FTP or on a floppy disc or CD-ROM. All the parts of the electronic submission must be contained in one zipped file (WinZip preferably, but tarred and gzipped is also accepted) and named after the last name of the first author of the paper.
The Zipped file contains the following parts:
- One file named biographies.zip (or biographies.tar.gz). For every author of the paper, there should be 2 files, both marked with the last name of the relevant author:
- An ASCII formatted text file with a short biography of the author
- A digital photograph of the author. Only TIFF or EPS format is accepted.
- One file named paper.zip (or paper.tar.gz). For the content of this file, there are 2 options:
- The file contains 1 Word file (named after the last name of the first author), which contains the paper.
- The file contains a PDF file (named after the last name of the first author), which contains the paper. A zipped file (named after the last name of the first author), which contains all TeX sources. If you choose this option, it is crucial that both the files (PDF and zipped TeX sources) are included in the zipped paper file.
The exact style of the paper itself will be discussed later. Please note that these are the only two ways to correctly submit your paper. Any other file format for any of the files will not be accepted.
- One file named figures.zip (or figures.tar.gz). This file contains all figures in electronic format. All figures must be in TIFF or EPS format. Any other format is not accepted. The name of each figure must correspond to the figure reference in the paper. For example, if your paper contains a Figure 4, the file figure4.tiff or figure4.eps must be included in the zipped figures file. For figures, we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint.
The electronic submission can be sent on a disc or CD (write on the disk the software packages used, the name of the first author and the name of the journal) or by FTP. The FTP address is:
ftp2.miralab.unige.ch
The zipped file can be directly transferred to the main directory. Information about login will be given to you by email. If the zipped file is smaller than 1 Mb, you can also send it by email as an attached file to the editor (email address is: jvca@miralab.unige.ch).
Manuscript style. The language of the journal is English. All submissions (including book reviews) must have a title and the paper submission must be printed on one side of the paper. The manuscripts should be written in 12pt font, the whole document must be double-line spaced in one column format and have a margin of 3cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text.
- The title page must list the full title, short title of up to 60 characters and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including email, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
- Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
- Supply a summary of up to 200 words for all articles except book reviews. It should be a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and should be understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.
- Include up to six keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes.
- The paper should not contain numbered headings or reference to numbered headings in the text. This is due to the journal style.
Program material should be supplied as originals on plain paper, and will, wherever possible, be reproduced photographically to avoid errors. The house style is to set programs, and program words in running text, in 10 pt Courier New. 'Keywords' are not usually distinguished by bolder type except in the case of Algol68, where they are set in Courier Bold. This also applies to Ada unless upper case is used. Note: these typefaces may not provide constant spacing. Thus, if character vertical alignments are important, it is essential that program listings are provided in camera-ready form. Failing this, authors should specify their requirements clearly in marginal notes.
Reference style. References should be cited by superior numbers and listed at the end of the paper in the order in which they appear in the text. All references must be complete and accurate. Online citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:
- Sanna A, Montuschi P. A new algorithm for the rendering of CSG scenes. The Computer Journal 1997; 9: 555-564.
- Maillot P-G. Using quaternions for coding 3D transformations. In Graphic Gems, Glassner AS (ed.); Academic Press: Boston, MA, 1990; pp 498-515.
Illustrations. Supply each illustration on a separate sheet, with the lead author's name and the figure number, with the top of the figure indicated, on the reverse. Supply original photographs; photocopies or previously printed material will not be used. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies). Tints are not acceptable; lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Supply artwork at about twice the intended size for printing.
There will be a limited number of colour illustrations in each issue of the journal: authors are requested to use black and white illustrations wherever possible. Authors should supply colour illustrations electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, or as first generation 35 mm colour transparencies (or larger formats if available). Colour prints are also acceptable.
Copyright. To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in the first issue of each volume of The Journal of Visualization and Computer Animation. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editor or publisher, or may be printed from this website.
Further Information. Proofs will be sent to the author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. 25 complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.
Final Checklist. Please observe the following points before sending your manuscript to the editor. Directly sending the manuscript in a proper format will greatly reduce the time before the paper is published.
- Are figures and tables saved and printed on separate pages in the electronic and hardcopy submission?
- Have you included a signed Copyright Transfer Agreement?
- Are biographies included for every author?
- Are all figures in TIFF or EPS format, including the photographs in the biographies?
- Are all images provided separately and correctly named?
- Have you used 12pt font in the manuscript?
- Is the manuscript double-line spaced and in single column format?
- Are all author affiliations complete?
- Did you add keywords to the manuscript?
- Is the manuscript written without using numbered headings?
- Are the references listed in the order in which they appear in the text?
