About the journal

The journal publishes results of work in which the central theme is the mechanisms by which temperature affects living organisms. It is wide in scope and includes studies at the biochemical and physiological levels and also at the level of the organism. The following are examples of the subject areas covered:

*Studies on the mechanisms involved in acclimation and acclimatization to temperature in plants and animals, including the phenomena of hibernation, dormancy, aestivation and diapause.

*The mechanisms of cellular heat and cold injury, and of the resistance of organisms to extremes of temperature.

*Effects of temperature on growth and development, ageing and life-span.

 *Effects of temperature on micro-organisms.

*Behavioural and physiological regulation of body temperature.

*Medical applications of hypo- and hyperthermy, excluding descriptive clinical studies and case-histories.

 *Review articles.

Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher. Submission also implies that all authors have approved the paper for release and are in agreement with its contents.

The journal will publish papers containing the results of original work in which the central theme is the mechanisms by which temperature affects living organisms. It will be wide in scope and will include studies at the biochemical and physiological level and also at the level of the organism.

Manuscript Preparation

General: Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. Good quality printouts with a font size of 12 or 10pt are required. The corresponding author should be identified (include a Fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible. An electronic copy of the paper should accompany the final version. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return original material after use. English is the preferred language; where this is not possible, papers in French or German may be accepted and these should be submitted with an extensive English abstract and summary.

Authors in Japan please note: Upon request, Elsevier Science Japan will provide you with a list of people who can check and improve the English of their paper (before submission). Please contact our Tokyo office: Elsevier Science 9-15, Higashi-Azabu, 1-chome, Minato-ku, Tokyo 106, Japan; Tel: (+81) 3-5561-5033, Fax: (+81) 3-5561-5047, E-mail: info@elsevier.co.jp

Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Illustrations, Figure Captions and then Tables. The main text, in general, should follow the conventional form: Introduction and literature, Materials & Methods, Results, Discussion and Summary. Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers.

In general, it is not necessary to publish all the individual results of replicated experiments. A statement of the number, their main value, and some appropriate measure of their variability is usually sufficient. The methods of analysis followed should be indicated, but statistical details such as tables of analysis of variance should be given only if they are relevant to the discussion. A statement that the difference between the mean value of two groups is statistically significant should include an indication of the level of significance attained.

In preparation of manuscripts, authors are requested to comply with the terminology adopted by the Journal (see Bligh, J., Johnson, K., G. J. Appl. Physiol. 35, 941-961. Glossary of Terms for Thermal Physiology. The full Latin name must be given of all species used in the investigation.

Paper Length: Authors are requested to keep their communications as concise as possible. Footnotes should be avoided and italics should not be used for emphasis.

Abstracts: The abstract should preferably consist of numbered sentences that summarize the main facts and conclusions of the paper. Not more than 100 words should be used, and 50 words are preferable.

Keywords: Authors should provide a list of up to 10 keywords or phrases that can be used in a subject index to refer to the paper.

References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to the author's name (without initials) and year of publication (e.g. "Since Peterson (1993) has shown that..." or "This is in the agreement with results obtained later (Kramer, 1994)"). For three or more authors use the first author followed by "et al.", in the text. The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by authors' names. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors' names and dates are exactly the same in the text as in the reference list.
References should be given in the following form:

Journal Article: Bevelander, G., Benzer, P., 1948. Calcification in marine molluscs. Biol. Bull. 94, 176-183.

Book: Krogh, A., 1929. The Anatomy and Physiology of Capillaries. Yale University Press, New Haven.

Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet.
Line drawings: Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.
Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.

Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).

Units and Abbreviations: Only standard abbreviations should be used. Where specialized terms are given a specific abbreviation this should be indicated as a footnote to the paper. The Systeme Internationale (SI) system for units is preferred.

Electronic Submission

Authors should submit an electronic copy of their paper with the final version of the manuscript. The electronic copy should match the hardcopy exactly. Always keep a backup copy of the electronic file for reference and safety. Full details of electronic submission and formats can be obtained from http://authors.elsevier.com or from Author Services at Elsevier Science.

Proofs Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full.

Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofs are to be returned to the Log-in Department, Elsevier Science Ltd, Stover Court, Bampfylde Street, Exeter, Devon EX1 2AH, U.K.

Offprints Twenty five offprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Order for reprints (produced after publication of an article) will incur a 50% surcharge.
