About the journal

The Journal of Dermatological Science publishes high quality peer-reviewed manuscripts covering the entire scope of dermatology, from molecular studies to clinical investigations. Laboratory and clinical studies which provide new information will be reviewed expeditiously and published in a timely manner.

The Editor and his Editorial Board especially encourage the publication of research based on a process of bilateral feedback between the clinic and the laboratory, in which incompletely understood clinical phenomena are examined in the laboratory and the knowledge thus acquired is directly reapplied in the clinic. This continuous feedback will refine and expand our understanding of both clinical and scientific domains.

Although the Journal is the official organ of the Japanese Society for Investigative Dermatology, it serves as an international forum for the work of all dermatological scientists. With an internationally renowned Editorial Board, the Journal maintains high scientific standards in the evaluation and publication of manuscripts. The Journal also publishes invited reviews, commentaries, meeting announcements and book reviews. Short communications reporting new results are also encouraged, as are papers with negative scientific data, if they contribute to advances in dermatology. The Journal also welcomes highly speculative articles with or even without supporting data, assuming the speculation is reasonable; such papers should be less than 2 printed pages and submitted as Letters to the Editor.

Instructions to Authors

Submission of Manuscript. One original and three copies of both the manuscript and all illustrative material, should be submitted to:

Hiroshi Shimizu M.D., Ph.D., Editor-in-Chief, Professor and Chairman, Department of Dermatology, Hokkaido University Graduate School of Medicine, N15 W7, Kita-ku, Sapporo 060-8638, Japan, Fax 81-(0)11-706-7820, E-mail: jdsci@med.hokudai.ac.jp.

The entire manuscript should be typed double-spaced, including the Abstract, footnotes, references, legends and tables, with 3-cm margins. An accompanying letter should indicate the name, address, telephone and fax numbers of the corresponding author.

Types of Contributions
Original papers, review articles and letters to the Editor are welcomed. All manuscripts must be typed in English. Original Papers: Basic and clinical scientific studies should be organized as follows: Title Page (the name of the corresponding author and his or her e-mail address must be printed in the title page), Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References, Legends, Tables and Figures. All pages should be numbered consecutively starting with the title page as page one. Trade names must have an initial capital; the trivial name for a compound may be used if the formal, chemical name (as established by international convention) is given after the first use.

Review Articles: A specific field is reviewed through classical and up-dated literature. Review articles are usually invited: however, submitted review articles will be considered. Review articles should not exceed 3750 words,5-10 figures and contain no more than 50 references, except in exceptional circumstances. An abstract is required.

Letters to the Editor: These will report original data or may discuss published articles. Submission requirements for Letters to the Editor are the same as for regular manuscripts. Letters are not to exceed approximately 1000 words and two figures. Comments may be solicited from authors if the letter refers to an article in the journal. Letters that report original data will be reviewed. All Letters to the Editor are subject to editing and possible abridgment. Letters to the Editors will be covered by Medline.

Disk Submission
Authors should submit a disk copy of their paper with the initial and final versions of the manuscript. The disk copy should match the hardcopy exactly. Always keep a backup copy of the disk file for reference and safety. Full details of disk submission and formats can be obtained from http://www.elsevier.nl/locate/disksub or from Author Services at Elsevier Science.

Title page.
List the title of the paper, authors' names, department and name of institution of origin, city and country. Include an address to which proofs and reprint requests should be mailed. Short communications should be clearly marked as such.

Structured abstracts
The paper should be prefaced by an abstract aimed at giving the entire paper in miniature. Abstracts should be no longer than 250 words. In brief, the abstract should be divided into sections including the following:
(1) Background
(2) Objective
(3) Methods
(4) Results
(5) Conclusion

Footnotes.
Footnotes should be listed consecutively at the foot of the page on which they appear, and be designated by superior numerals.

References.
A maximum of 10 references may be listed. References should by typed double-spaced on a separate sheet of paper. They should be individually numbered in order of appearance in the text. In the text they should be referred to by the numbers in square brackets. Example: Earlier studies in this laboratory [7-9]...When the authors' names are mentioned in the text, list no more than two authors. When three or more authors are involved list only the first name followed by "et al." and the reference number.Example: Jones et al. [7]. The reference list, including all authors names and initials, should be typed on a separate sheet, double spaced and numbered in the order of appearance. The abbreviations of journal titles should conform to those adopted by Index Medicus.

Periodicals
should be referenced as follows: [1] Hashimoto K, Matsumoto K, Higashiyama M, Nishida Y, Yoshikawa K: Growth inhibitory effects of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 on normal and psoriatric keratinocytes. Br J Dermatol 123: 93-98,1993.
Multi-author volumes should be referenced as follows: [1] Hashimoto K,Matsumoto K. Yoshikawa K: The effect of D3 on human keratinocytes and its metabolism. In the Biology of the Epidermis. Edited by A Ohkawara, J McGuire. Elsevier Science Publishers BV, Amsterdam, 1992, pp. 123-131.
Monographs should be referenced as follows:[1] Siegel SS: Nonparametric Statistics for the Behavior Science. McGraw-Hill, New York,1956. References may be made to material "in press" as follows: Jensen CV; Nature (in press). Do not include references to personal communications, unpublished data or manuscripts either in preparation or submitted for publication. If essential, such material may be incorporated at the appropriate place in the text. Authors are responsible for bibliographic accuracy.

Tables.
Tables with legends must be typed (double-spaced) on separate sheets. The table number (in Arabic numerals) should be in the order of appearance in the text and a short title must be supplied. Footnotes in the table are designated by superscript a,b,c,etc.

Four sets of glossy prints in envelopes must be submitted with each manuscript. On the back of each figure the author should indicate, with a soft pencil: (1) the top and the number of the figure, and (2) the name of the first author. For textural placement all figures should be numbered in the order of appearance. Parts of the figure, such as A,B, etc.,should be labelled on the figure. Legends should be submitted on a separate sheet of paper, according to the following example: Fig 1. A short title. Additional explanation may be briefly given.

Color Figures.
The printing costs of color reproduction of figures are free of charge, subject to the Editor's discretion. Please note that only figures for which color printing is essential will be considered.
