Instructions to Authors

Guide for Authors

Information for Contributors

Submitting the manuscript

The Journal of Critical Care provides a forum for the publication of original peer-reviewed articles that cover all aspects of Health Services Research in Critical Care including biomedical research, epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy research, social sciences, technology development, and relevant legal and ethical concerns.

Manuscripts are accepted for consideration on the condition that they are contributed solely to the Journal of Critical Care. No substantial part of a paper may have been or may be published elsewhere, except for an abstract of 200 words or less. Manuscripts will be critically reviewed by the Editor with appropriate independent referees drawn from the Editorial Board and other experts. Acceptance of papers for publication is based upon the originality of the observation or investigation, the quality of the work described, and the clarity of the presentation. Papers will ordinarily be published in the order in which they are finally accepted for publication and not in the order of submission. Acknowledgments to other investigators for advice or data must be substantiated by written authorization specifically granting permission to authors.

Letters to the Editor: Letters to the Editor are welcomed and will be published if appropriate. They should be typewritten, double spaced, and generally should be no more than two typewritten pages in length.

Editorials, Reviews, and State of the Art: These will be solicited by the Editorial Board and must be prepared in a manner appropriate for other papers; they will be reviewed as are original articles submitted for consideration. A summary of no more than 200 words should precede all invited review articles.

The Journal of Critical Care subscribes, in general, to the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" (Ann Intern Med 108:258?265, 1988). However, authors must accept the responsibility of conforming to the exceptions to the instructions in "Information for Contributors." Articles, editorials, letters to the Editor, and other text material in the Journal of Critical Care represent the opinions of the authors and do not reflect the opinions of the Publisher or the institution with which the author is affiliated, unless the contrary is specified.

Authors submitting a manuscript do so with the understanding that if it is accepted for publication, copyright in the article, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms and media, shall be assigned exclusively to the Publisher. To comply with US copyright laws, authors of accepted manuscripts and letters will be requested to sign a copyright release form. The Publisher will not refuse any reasonable request by the author for permission to reproduce any of his or her contributions to the journal.

All correspondence concerning the manuscript should be addressed to the Editor.

Papers reporting human experimentation will be reviewed in accordance with the precepts established by the Helsinki Declaration. Copies of this declaration may be obtained by writing to the American Medical Association, 535 N Dearborn St, Chicago, IL, 60610. Such papers must include a statement that the human investigations were performed after-approval by a local Human Investigations Committee and in accord with an assurance filed with and approved by the Department of Health and Human Services where appropriate.

Preparing the manuscript

The original and two complete copies of the manuscript (including letters to the Editor) must be submitted. Manuscripts must be typewritten, double or triple spaced on good quality 8?by-11-inch white paper with margins of at least one inch. Please do not use erasable bond.

The first page of the manuscript should contain the following information: (1) title of paper; (2) author names; (3) name of the institution in which work was done; (4) acknowledgments for research support; (5) name and address of the author to whom communications should be directed.

The second page should contain a structured abstract of no more than 200 words and should contain the following information: (1) Purpose: Why was this study done? (2) Materials and Methods: What was the source of the data generated? How was it obtained? (3) Results: Findings should be objectively reported and statistical significance indicated (if appropriate). (4) Conclusions: Do not include a summary at the end of the paper. For all invited review articles, please submit a summary of no more than 200 words in lieu of a structured abstract.

Preparing illustrations and tables

All tables and figures must be cited in the text. The appropriate location of each table or figure should be indicated in the margin of the manuscript in pencil.

Tables are numbered with arabic numerals (Table 1, Table 2) in order of their text citation. Each table should be typed (double-spaced throughout) on a separate sheet of paper and should have a title. Maximum table width: 144 characters (ie, letters and spaces). Use spaces, not vertical rules, to separate columns.

Illustration legends are also numbered in arabic numbers (Fig 1, Fig 2). Legends should be typed double-spaced on manuscript paper not attached to the illustrations themselves. Legends should be sufficiently detailed to allow understanding without reference to the text.

Illustrations should be identified (in light pencil on the back) by the author's name as well as by figure number. TOP should be marked, and maximum cropping indicated. Line drawings should be submitted as glossy black and white prints of original artwork of professional quality. Laser jet quality graphs produced using professional software packages are also acceptable. Photocopied illustrations are not suitable for reproduction in the journal (they are, however, acceptable as duplicate copies). Maximum width of illustration after reduction: 6 inches. The cost of color plates must be borne by the author. Color prints are not acceptable for reproduction as black and white prints.

If any illustration has been previously published, a copy of the letter of permission from the copyright holder must accompany the illustration. The source of the illustration should be included among the References to the paper. The figure legend should conclude with "Reprinted with permission" followed by the reference number: Reprinted with permission. (23).

Failure to comply with specifications for preparing illustrations and tables may result in their return to the contributor for revision and a consequent delay of the review process.

References

References should be cited in the text by number. Not more than three authors need be cited per reference; if there are more than three authors, use "et al" after the third author's name. References should be compiled at the end of the article in numeric order, and should be styled as follows:
