Instructions to Authors

1. The editor welcomes original contributions and also commentaries and reviews. By submission of a manuscript an author certifies that the work is original and is not being considered simultaneously by another publisher. In order to safeguard authors' rights, the copyright of all material published is vested in Carfax Publishing Ltd. Those wishing to submit articles, commentaries or reviews for publication should send three copies to: Professor Asit K. Biswas, President, Third World Centre for Water Management, Manantial Oriente 27, Arboledas, Los Clubes, Atizapan, Estado de Mexico, 52958 Mexico.
Tel: 52-55-5379.5429
fax: 52-55-5379.5439
E-mail: akb@pumas.iingen.unam.mx or akbiswas@att.net.mx

2. Manuscripts should normally not exceed 6000 words; shorter is better. All manuscripts will be refereed and only those receiving favourable recommendation will be accepted for publication. Members of the international editorial board will be pleased to discuss or forward papers on behalf of authors.

3. Submit three copies, typed double spaced on one side of good quality A4 (or similar) paper with wide margins. Number the pages. Keep a copy yourself. The author's full name and postal address should be given on a title sheet; start the paper proper on page 2.

4. A short abstract of around 100 words should precede the introduction. The abstract should be clear and informative, giving an indication of the scope of and results contained in the paper.

5. Use capital letters for the main headings, lower case for subsections. Do not underline, italicise or otherwise annotate the text. Do not use footnotes; if explanatory notes are essential, refer to them in the text by superscripts 1, 2, 3, etc. The notes themselves should be gathered together at the end of the manuscript before the references section. All measurements should be in metric units, or state metric equivalents.

6. Do not insert tables and figures in the text, but gather them together at the end. Copies are acceptable for refereeing, but originals must be supplied immediately on acceptance of a manuscript. Refer to tables as Tables, numbered consecutively. Refer to all other illustrations (maps, charts, diagrams, photographs, etc.) as Figures, also numbered consecutively. Tables and figures should include short but informative captions; all captions should be gathered onto a separate sheet at the end of the manuscript. Note the format of the journal (see sizes below) in devising and sizing tables and figures.

(a) Photographs should be well-contrasted prints on glossy paper, unmounted and approximately final size. Mark (very lightly) the author's name, figure number and the 'top' on the back of each. If the lines on lettering must appear on the photograph, supply two copies of which one should be marked.

(b) Line diagram copies should be submitted at the size the author would wish them to appear, but originals should be 1.5 to 2 times final size. They must be in dense black ink on draughting film or equivalent. Maximum final sizes in the journal, including borders, are 12.5 cm x 20.5 cm (full page) and 12.5 cm x 10.25 cm (half page). Include lettering on the diagram, allowing for reduction, or supply a separate tracing paper overlay marked to ensure exact positioning and registration. Ensure that scales, keys and other critical labelling are included.

(c) Tables can be typeset or supplied ready for reproduction, in which case follow the guidelines for line diagrams. Plan each table with care to ensure compatibility with the page size and layout, and to avoid the need for reformatting.

7. References should be cited in the text by giving the last name of the author(s) followed by the year of publication in parentheses, e.g. Smith & Jones (1990); (Smith, 1992a, 1992b). For three or more authors, use the first author followed by et al.

8. The full references must be typed, double spaced, on a separate sheet at the end of the manuscript. They should include all authors' names and initials, year of publication, title of article or book, the full title of the journal, volume and page numbers and, for books and other documents, the publisher's name and place of publication, e.g.

Chau, K.W. (1993) Management of Limited Water Resources in Hong Kong, International Journal of Water Resources Development, 9, pp. 65-73.

Biswas, A. K. (1997) Water Resources: Environmental Planning, Management and Development (New York, McGraw Hill).

Pezzey, J. (1988) Market mechanisms of pollution control: 'polluter pays', economic and practical aspects in: R. K. Turner (Ed.) Sustainable Environmental Management: Principles and Practice (London, Belhaven Press).

9. Page proofs will be sent to authors in electronic PDF format, via email, if time permits. These must be corrected immediately and returned promptly to the publisher. Only printer's errors should be corrected; major changes or corrections are not acceptable.

10. Early Electronic Offprints: Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author's preferential rate of $5.00 per copy.

11. It is a condition of publication that authors vest copyright in their papers, including abstracts, in Taylor & Francis Ltd. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the article elsewhere after publication providing that prior permission is obtained from Taylor & Francis Ltd. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
