About the journal
This international journal publishes papers concerned with all aspects of the science, technology and application of refractory metals and hard materials. New technological developments now enlarge the scope to cover those metals with melting points around 2000 degrees Centigrade and higher, with similar powder metallurgical production and fields of application. This includes the following metals and their alloys: Zirconium Niobium Molybdenum Ruthenium Iridium Hafnium Tantalum Tungsten Osmium Vanadium Chromium Rhenium Rhodium Advances in hard materials continue and the journal will continue to deal with the production, uses and properties of the carbides, nitrides and borides of these metals and those of titanium, as well as tools of ceramics, the superhard boron nitrides and diamond and related compounds. Papers are also published on the technologies of powder production [including their precursor materials], milling, granulation, cold and hot compaction, sintering, hot isostatic pressing, hot-pressing, injection moulding, as well as on the coating technologies for refractory metals, hard metals and hard materials. The characterization, testing, quality assurance and applications are also covered.
Instructions to Authors
Submission of Papers Submission of a manuscript implies that it is not being simultaneously considered for publication elsewhere. All papers should be sent to the Managing Editor, Professor Hugo M. Ortner, Department of Materials Science, Technical University of Darmstadt, Petersenstr. 23, D-64287 Darmstadt, Germany. All authors must sign the 'Transfer of Copyright' agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Science Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but does not relinquish the author's proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microform or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations, and includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any figures for which copyright exists. Preparation of the Manuscripts Two copies should be provided in double-spaced typing on pages of uniform size, with a wide margin at the left. Generally, the size of the manuscript should be the minimum consistent with clarity. Each paper should be provided with an Abstract of about 100-150 words, reporting on the purpose and results of the paper and with five key words for use in indexing and by Abstract services. All papers should be written in English. Papers in French or German will be considered but authors are advised to consult the Editor before submitting a manuscript. The title of the paper should reflect its contents. Names and addresses of the authors should follow the title. The Editor reserves the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. The SI system must be used for all scientific and laboratory data, although values in other systems may be quoted in parentheses after the SI units if authors consider it necessary. Temperatures should be given in Celsius ( C) or Kelvin (K) scales. Abbreviations for units should follow the suggestions of the British Standards publication BS 1991. The full stop should not be included in abbreviations, e.g. m (not m.), ppm (not p.p.m.); ' and '/' should be used in preference to 'per cent' and 'per'. Where abbreviations are likely to cause ambiguity or not be readily understood by an international readership, units should be put in full. Tables (numbered consecutively), references and legends to illustrations should be typed on separate sheets and placed at the end of the paper. Footnotes should be avoided. The use of proprietary names should be avoided as far as possible, but may be acceptable where, in the Editor's opinion, the proprietary name is a universally known description of the material in question, e.g. Kevlar-49. Papers essentially of an advertising nature will not be accepted. Papers will normally be published in order of acceptance by the Editor, although this may occasionally be changed for reasons of space, or to publish more quickly particular papers which the Editor considers of topical interest. References References to published work should be numbered sequentially in order of citation in the text, and cited in the text by numerals within square brackets, e.g. [1], with a reference list in numerical order at the end of the article. The list should give name of author(s) followed by initial(s), exact title of paper, contracted title of periodical as in World List Scientific Periodicals 4th Edn (1963-65), year of issue followed by a semicolon, volume number in arabic numerals, and initial and final page numbers of article. The titles of books should be underlined, followed by editors' names where appropriate, the publisher, the town and the year of publication. Where appropriate, initial and final page numbers should also be quoted. Typical examples of the style required are: [1] Exner H E, Qualitative and quantitative interpretation of microstructures in cemented carbides. In: Viswanadham R K, Rowcliffe D J, Gurland J, editors. Science of Hard Materials. New York: Plenum Press, 1983: 233-62. [2] Edmonds D V, Structure/property relationships in sintered heavy alloys. Int. J. Refr. Metals & Hard Mater. 1991; 15: 15-26. [3] Pink E, Bartha L, editors. The Metallurgy of Doped/Non-sag Tungsten, London: Elsevier, 1989. Illustrations The original and two copies, which may be of a reduced size, of each illustration should be provided. Line diagrams may be submitted in any medium providing that the image is black and very sharp. If computer-generated, illustrations should be laser-printed: note that dot-matrix printers do not produce diagrams of sufficiently high quality for satisfactory reproduction. They should preferably all require the same degree of reduction; large diagrams, more than four times final size, are discouraged due to handling difficulties. The type area of the journal is 180mm wide x 240mm deep, in two columns per page, each 85mm wide, and lettering should therefore be large enough to be legible after reduction of the illustration to fit (ideally 7pt lettering after reduction). Photographs should be submitted as contrasting black-and-white prints on glossy paper. Each illustration must be clearly numbered and the name(s) of the author(s) of the paper written on the reverse side. Disks For papers produced using a word-processor or TEX, please submit a disk with the final revised version of the manuscript. The file on disk should correspond exactly to the hard copy. The operating system and the word-processor used should be specified clearly. Illustrations or chemical structures in electronic format may be supplied provided that the file format and the program used to produce them is clearly indicated and that a hard copy is also supplied. More detailed guidelines and further information are available from the publisher. Proofs Authors will receive a set of proofs for checking. No new material may be inserted in the text at the time of proof reading unless accepted by the Editor (e.g. to provide further details of references or as a 'Note added in proof'). All joint communications should indicate the name and full postal address of the author to whom proofs are to be sent. Page charges and offprints There will be no page charges. Twenty-five offprints of each paper will be supplied free of charge. Additional copies can be ordered at current printing prices. Author Enquiries: For enquiries relating to the submission of articles (including electronic submission), the status of accepted manuscripts through our Online Article Status Information System (OASIS), author Frequently Asked Questions and any other enquiries relating to Elsevier Science, please consult http://www.elsevier.com/locate/authors/ For specific enquires on the preparation of electronic artwork, consult http://www.elsevier.com/locate/authorartwork/. Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article, especially those relating to proofs, are provided when an article is accepted for publication.
