It is published in English, quarterly. The Society also publish the Newsletter in Japanese, biannually.

Instructions to Authors

General

Hypertension Research is the official publication of the Japanese Society of Hypertension. The journal publishes paper reporting original clinical and experimental research which contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of hypertension and related cardiovascular diseases. The journal publishes full papers, case reports and reviews. Manuscripts submitted to Hypertension Research will be accepted on the understanding that the author must not have previously submitted the paper to another journal or have published the material elsewhere. Manuscripts from non-members outside Japan are also acceptable.

Submissions

Manuscripts should be sent to:

Toshiro Fujita, M.D. (Editor-in-Chief Hypertension Research)

Department of Nephrology and Endocrinology,

University of Tokyo School of Medicine

7-3-1, Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-8655, Japan

Phone: +81-3-5800-9735, Fax: +81-3-5800-9736

Submissions should consist of one original typescript and three additional copies. Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced on white typewriter paper. Margins should not be less than 3 cm. Do not use proportional spacing or justified margins. Number all pages –including figure legends, tables, and figuresEexcept the title page. Manuscripts should include the following sections, each of which begins on a separate sheet: Title page, Abstract and Key words, Text, References, Tables and Captions.

All manuscripts should be prepared to meet the “Uniform requirement for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journalsErecommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (N Engl J Med 1997; 336: 309E15).

Title page

The title page should carry (1) the complete title of the paper, (2) first names, middle initials and last names of all authors, (3) full names of departments or institutions of origin, (4) a short running head consisting of not more than 50 characters including spaces, (5) names of grants and (6) name with complete postal address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address of the author to whom communications, proofs and requests for reprints should be sent. Co-authors should be less than 10 persons. Total pages of the manuscript, and total numbers of tables and figures should be indicated.

Abstract and Key words

The second page should carry a separate abstract not exceeding 250 words, which should consist of the purpose of the study, the basic procedures and the most important conclusion.

The abstract should be followed by a list of 3-5 key words. When possible, the terms should be from the Medical Subject Headings list of Index Medicus.

Text

The text should be organized as follows: Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion.

Manuscripts of studies on humans should indicate that the study was approved by the institutional ethical committee and the subjects gave informed consent. Authors also should draw attention to the Code of Ethics of the World Medical Association (Declaration of Helsinki, 1964, and Declaration of Tokyo, 1975, as revised in 1983). When reporting experiments on animals, indicate whether the procedures were in accordance with institutional on the National Research Council's guidelines.

Suppliers of specific instruments or drugs should be noted, giving both the company name and city. Generic names of drugs should be used. Units of measurement should be expressed in the Systeme International d'Unites (SI Units).

For example, molar (M) should be changed to mol/1. Measurements currently not converted to SI units in biomedical applications are blood and oxygen pressures, enzyme activity, H+ concentration, temperature, and volume. Abbreviations, if used, should be defined on their first appearance in the text. Cite in numerical order every reference, figure and table. Indicate the appropriate position of figures and tables in the right margin of the manuscript.

Acknowledgements

Acknowledgements should be made to only those who have made a substantial contribution to the study.

References

References should be listed in numerical order at the end of the article. References should include the names of all authors when 6 or less; when 7 or more, list only the first 3 names and add et al. References should also include the full title. Journal names should be abbreviated as in the Index Medicus.

Example (journal)---Hollenberg NK, Coletti C, Passan D: Hypertension, volume and vasoconstriction: studies on the renal blood supply in SHR, WKY, and DOCA-salt rat models. Hypertens Res 1992; 15: 3-0.

Example (book)---Goldblatt PJ: The Goldblatt experiment: a conceptual paradigm, in Laragh JH, Brenner BM (eds): Hypertension; Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and Management. New York, Raven Press, 1990, pp 21-2.

Personal communications, unpublished observations, and submitted manuscripts should be cited in the text as "(unpublished observations)." Abstracts may be cited only if they are the sole sources, and must be identified in the references as "(Abstract)." When including manuscripts accepted but not yet published, indicate the journal followed by "(in press)."

Tables

Tables should be given an Arabic number and a brief title. Horizontal rules should be drawn above and below the column headings and at the bottom of the table. No vertical rules should be used. Provide a footnote to each table, identifying all abbreviations used.

Figures

Figure legends should be prepared on a separate page. Original artworks should be professionally prepared using black ink. Submit two sets of unmounted glossy photographic prints (not original artworks) in a separate envelope backed by cardboard. The photographic prints should have labels pasted on the back bearing the figure number, the first author's name and mark indicating the top of the figure. Illustrations should be submitted in sizes that can be reduced to one column width 7.5 cm or two colums width 15 cm.

Prepare three photocopies of each figure and attach one set of copies to each manuscript (i.e., to the original and four copies). Figure numbers should be mentioned on all photocopies. Authors are responsible for the cost of color illustrations. Photomicrographs should have internal scale markers.

Revisions

If revisions are not received within 90 days from the last decision letter, the manuscript is assigned a new number. At the editors' discretion, and in cases where substantial new data are required, extensions may be granted for revisions. In such cases, every effort will be made to retain the original reviewers. Submit diskette (Windows/Mac), hard copies of the manuscript, figures, and all attachments using priority mail or express delivery. Number the title page in the top right corner, using your manuscript number followed by /R1 to denote a first revision. In your written response to the reviewers' comments, give the exact page number(s), paragraph(s), and line number(s) where each revision was made. Our equipment can handle the following programs (any version) in their 'native' format: MS-DOS or Macintosh Microsoft Word. Manuscript prepared on the other word processors should be sent as rtf or text file.

Page charges

If the printed pages of an article exceed 4 pages, authors will be charged \10,000 for each additional printed page.
