Instructions to Authors
Instructions for Authors
Submission of Manuscripts
All submissions should be made online at Critical Reviews in Microbiology's Manuscript Central site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.
Authors should prepare and upload an anonymous main document with all information identifying the author removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to reviewers. A separate title page including the full names of all authors, their academic or professional affiliations, and the complete address (including e-mail) for the corresponding author should be uploaded and designated as 'title page (not for review). The electronic files themselves are preferred in MS Word.
In order to be considered for review, each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement on the title page that it has not been published elsewhere, nor has it been submitted simultaneously for publication in another journal. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.
All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten, double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title as the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of not more than 100 words. In the abstract, avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and direct reference to the text.
References
References should be alphabetized by author and compiled in a separate section at the end of the manuscript. Cite in text by author and date. Reference style should follow The Chicago Manual of Style, 14th ed.
Examples:
Journal Article Miller, J.A., and E.C. Miller. 1969. The metabolic activation of carcinogenic aromatic amines and amides. Prog.Exp.Tumor Res. 11: 273-278.
Book Barrett, J.T. 1978. Textbook of Immunology, 3rd ed. St. Louis: C.V. Mosby Publishers.
Chapter in an Edited Book August, P.V. 1979. Distress calls in Artibeus jamaicensis: Ecology and evolutionary implications. In Vertebrate ecology in the northern Neotropics, ed. J.F. Eisenberg, 151- 159. Washington, D.C.: Smithsonian Institution Press.
Footnotes
Footnotes should be identified in the text by superscript Arabic numerals and cited consecutively in the paper. All footnotes should be compiled on a separate sheet.
Illustrations
Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:
300 dpi or higher sized to fit on journal page EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first page with color is $1000.00. The next three pages with color are $500.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totalling more than 4 journal pages. High-quality color files should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.
Tables and Figures
Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate files. A short, descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labelled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked with the number, author's name, and top edge indicated.
Proofs/Offprints
One set of proofs is sent to the author. Proofs should be carefully checked and returned promptly. Alterations made in proofs should be absolutely minimal. An offprint order form will accompany the galleys, which should be completed and returned with the proofs.
Declaration of Interest
Informa Healthcare adheres to the Conflict of Interest policy recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). (http://www.icmje.org/index.html#conflict)
All sources of funding for research are to be stated in a mandatory Declaration of Interest section. This section should appear within the manuscript, before the reference list. In order to qualify for peer review submissions to the journal must include this section, outlining the full disclosure of all relationships (this includes consultancies, employment, honoraria, speakers bureaus, retainers, stock options or ownership, patents or patent applications) that could present a potential conflict of interest. It is the responsibility of authors to disclose financial relationships which may affect the conduct or reporting of the work submitted.
If uncertain as to what might be considered a potential conflict of interest, authors are encouraged to query the journal editor. If there are no conflicts of interest, authors should state that there are none. In the interest of transparency, the disclosed information will be made available to reviewers and, at the discretion of the editors, may appear in the published article.
NIH Public Access Policy
Informa Healthcare's position with respect to public access to NIH-funded work published in Informa Healthcare journals is as follows:
Informa Healthcare authors may voluntarily submit their funded work to PubMed Central after a 12-month embargo period. “Funded work?shall be defined as the final, peer-reviewed manuscript that is accepted by the Editor-in-Chief of the journal. This manuscript must not be altered by publisher's copyediting and typesetting services. This embargo period begins the day the work is published online at www.informaworld.com.
