About the journal
Aims & Scope 2007 Impact Factor: 2.973 Ranking: 12/70 (Chemistry Analytical) 2008 Thomson Reuters, Journal Citation Reports
This journal provides in-depth, scholarly, insightful reviews of important topics within the vast discipline of analytical chemistry and other chemical measurement sciences. Critical Reviews in Analytical Chemistry is devoted to publishing review articles that teach the relevant underlying science, evaluate the field's status by putting recent developments into proper perspective and context, and speculate on possible future developments. A limited number of articles are of a more “tutorial?format written by experts for scientists seeking introduction or clarification in a new area. A stringent peer review process is an integral part of the publication process. The journal serves as a forum to link various underlying components such as chemical analysis, instrumentation, mathematics, equilibrium, physics, engineering, materials science, and environmental sciences in a broad, interdisciplinary fashion while maintaining an appropriate balance between applied and fundamental research. It continues to be a dependable and useful resource for both the expert and the student.
Authors wishing an editorial opinion on the appropriateness of the proposed review topic, the perspective that will be taken by the authors, the likely length of the published manuscript., etc. are encouraged to contact the Editor-in-Chief. There is no requirement to do this but early communication can facilitate the review process starting when the ms. is received.

Aims and Scope
The purpose of Critical Reviews in Analytical Chemistry is to provide in-depth, scholarly, and insightful reviews of important topics within the vast discipline of analytical chemistry. The emphasis will be on publication of the finest caliber, genuinely “critical?review articles which will serve to teach the relevant underlying science, evaluate the field's status by putting recent developments into proper perspective and context, and speculate on possible future developments. A stringent peer review program is an integral part of the publication process.
Critical Reviews in Analytical Chemistry serves as a forum to link various underlying components (e.g., chemical analysis, instrumentation, mathematics, equilibrium, physics, engineering, materials science, environmental sciences, etc.) in a broad, interdisciplinary fashion while maintaining an appropriate balance between applied and fundamental research. It is hoped that the Journal will continue to be a dependable and useful resource for both the expert and the interested student.
Articles published in Critical Reviews in Analytical Chemistry are normally initiated through invitation extended by the Editors or by members of the Editorial Advisory Board; however, contributed manuscripts will be carefully considered.
Submission of Manuscripts
Three copies of original full length manuscripts, as well as letters to the editor and other correspondence, should be submitted to: Professor Charles Loch uller, Editor-in-Chief, 2819 McDowell Road, Durham, NC, U.S.A. 27705-5604. E-mail: charles.lochmuller@duke.edu. Authors are strongly encouraged to submit manuscripts on disk. The disk should be prepared using MS Word or WordPerfect and should be clearly labeled with the authors' names, file name, and software program. A hardcopy printout that exactly matches the disk must be supplied. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.
Papers are accepted only in English. Contributors from non-English speaking countries are encouraged to seek editorial help in preparing their manuscripts. All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten, double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 35 character spaces, and several key words. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of 100-150 words. Avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text in the abstract.
References
References and notes are indicated in the text by consecutive Arabic numbers. The full list should be collected and typed at the end of the paper in numerical order. Listed references should be complete in all details, including article titles in journals. Examples:
Journal Article: N. Chaniotakis, A. M. Chasser, and M. E. Meyerhoff, Influence of porphyrin structure on anion selectivities of manganese(III) porphyrin based membrane electrodes. Analytical Chemistry, 60 (1988):185-188.
Book: K. A. Connors, Binding Constants: The Measurements of Molecular Complex Stability (New York: Wiley, 1987).
Chapter in Book: Z. Fang, Analytical methods and techniques, in Flow Injection Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, ed. J. L. Burguera (New York: Marcel Dekker, 1989), ch. 4, 120-132.
Figures
All figures should be numbered with consecutive Arabic numerals and be mentioned in the text. Figures submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author's name, and top edge indicated. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:
- 300 dpi or higher
- EPS or TIFF format only
- submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files
Color Reproduction
Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Color art can be purchased for online only conversion and reproduction or for print + online reproduction. Color reprints can only be ordered if print + online reproduction costs are paid. Rates for color art reproduction are: Online Only Reproduction: $225 for the first page of color; $100 per page for each of the next three pages of color. A maximum charge of $525 applies. Print + Online Reproduction: $900 for the first page of color; $450 per page for each of the next three pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for articles will more than 4 pages of color.
Tables
Tables should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction.
Proofs
One set of proofs is sent to the corresponding author. Proofs should be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours. If corrections are not returned within the allotted time, the editor will proofread the article and it will be printed per his instruction. Only correction of typographical errors is permitted. The author will be charged for additional alterations to text at the proof stage.
Reprints
Each corresponding author of an article will receive a PDF file of the article via email. This file is for personal use only and may not be copied and disseminated in any form without prior written permission from Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
