ISSN ACP: 1680-7316 (Paper) 1680-7324 (Online)

ISSN ACPD: 1680-7367 (Paper) 1680-7375 (Online)

Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics (ACP) is an international scientific journal dedicated to the publication and public discussion of high quality studies investigating the Earth's atmosphere and the underlying chemical and physical processes. It covers the altitude range from the land and ocean surface up to the turbopause, including the troposphere, stratosphere and mesosphere.

The main subject areas comprise atmospheric modelling, field measurements, remote sensing, and laboratory studies of gases, aerosols, clouds and precipitation, isotopes, radiation, dynamics, biosphere interactions, and hydrosphere interactions (for details see Editorial Subject Areas). The manuscript types considered for peer-reviewed publication are research articles, review articles, technical notes and commentaries/replies.

ACP has an innovative two-stage publication process involving the scientific discussion forum Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics Discussion (ACPD), which has been designed to

  • foster scientific discussion;
  • maximise the effectiveness and transparency of scientific quality assurance;
  • enable rapid publication of new scientific results;
  • make scientific publications freely accessible.

In the first stage, papers that pass a rapid access peer-review are immediately published on the Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics Discussion (ACPD) website. They are then subject to interactive public discussion, during which the referees' comments (anonymous or attributed), additional short comments by other members of the scientific community (attributed) and the authors' replies are also published in ACPD. In the second stage, the peer-review process is completed and final revised papers are published in ACP. To ensure publication precedence for authors, and to provide a lasting record of scientific discussion, ACPD and ACP are both ISSN-registered, permanently archived and fully citable. For details see General Information and Evaluation.

ACP also offers an efficient new way of publishing special issues, in which the individual papers are published as soon as available and linked electronically (for more information see Special Issues).

Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics (ACP) and Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics Discussion (ACPD) are published by Copernicus GmbH on behalf of the European Geosciences Union (EGU).

Instructions to Authors

General Terms of Publication

Overall Rules

While the European Geosciences Union (EGU) welcomes any original scientific work for publication in its journals and book series, it expects that

  • the work submitted for publication has not been published before, except in the form of an abstract or as part of a published lecture or thesis, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication has been approved by all authors and, tacitly or explicitly, by the responsible authorities and/or the institutes where the work has been carried out, that, if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication, the authors agree to automatic transfer the copyright to the EGU, and that the manuscript will not be published elsewhere in any language without the consent of the copyright holders
  • the author(s) have secured the right to reproduce any material in his/her/their work that has already been published elsewhere.
  • the author(s) agree(s) with the Copyright Agreement of the Union that all articles published in its journals and book series may be freely reproduced for non-commercial, scientific purposes; however, that reproduction, storage or translation for any other purposes requires prior permission from the Union, and that the moral right of the author(s) to be identified as the author(s) of the respective article(s) is asserted.
  • the author(s) agree(s) with the overall scheme for funding the publications of the Union.
General Guidelines for Manuscripts & Submission
  • In general, contributions should be short but self-contained, concentrating on new results or techniques. With regard to "extended abstracts", the final version of the paper should not exceed 1-3 pages, while with regard to "proceedings", the final version of a contributed paper should not exceed 4-6 pages (sample of two column layout) and of an invited paper not more than 10-12 pages, including figures tables, appendices and references.
  • Papers should be clear, concise, and written in English. They must conform to the organization and style of the journal with correct spelling and good sentence structure. Correct English is the responsibility of the author(s), although the editor(s) and the referees are kindly asked to help in language editing of the manuscript if necessary. On request by the editor, articles will also be copy-edited.
  • Manuscripts (i.e. work prior to the review process) as well as articles (i.e. work having passed the review process) must be submitted in digital format, zipped or not zipped, by using the appropriate upload forms (first option), by email or ftp or on diskette or CD-ROM to the Editorial Support Office or to the Publication Production Office, respectively.
  • In case of "extended abstracts" or "proceedings" or "special issues" or "special publications" the authors have occasionally to submit their manuscripts for peer review to selected Editors (Guest-Editors). It is the responsibility of the Organizers of such publications to inform the authors about the technical details of the submission in consultation with these Editors (Guest-Editors). The editors (Guest-Editors) will be responsible to select at least two independent referees per manuscript and to use the "Check-List for Reviewers" and the "Editor's Report Form" for the peer-review process and to inform the author about the outcome of this process respectively (External Evaluation). Only the final articles, however, must be submitted to the Publication Production Office.
  • With regard to standard publications the authors have to submit their manuscripts directly to the EGU
