About the journal

 Aerosol Science and Technology

The official journal of the American Association for Aerosol Research, Aerosol Science and Technology covers theoretical and experimental investigations of aerosol and closely related phenomena. It presents high quality papers on fundamental and applied topics in this important and rapidly expanding field.

Instructions to Authors

Aerosol Science and Technology (AS&T) is a peer-reviewed, international journal that publishes the results of theoretical and experimental investigations into aerosol phenomena and closely related subjects. The goal of AS&T is to advance the knowledge of aerosols and to facilitate their application. The journal therefore encourages the submission of research and review papers, technical notes, tutorials, and communications on the latest and most intriguing results from fundamental and applied research efforts.

Form and Style

In order to facilitate reviewing and processing of manuscripts, papers should be submitted as PDF files to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ast. Because fonts are not uniformly available even in different versions of the same word processing program, please use the save all fonts option when preparing the PDF file. Papers, accepted as Notes or Brief Communications, should not exceed 1800 words, including allowances for references. Tables and figures at 200 words equivalent each. All material should be formatted on 8 ½ x 11 in. paper, double spaced throughout (this applies to text, references, footnotes, quoted matter, figure legends, and tables). Allow ample margins. Number pages and, if possible, include line numbers to aid reviewers in identify-ing specific points in the manuscript. Authors are encour-aged to utilize the Chicago Manual of Style, 14th Edition, to address questions of grammar and style. Reference lists, figure legends, and tabular material should be typed on separate sheets. All sections of the paper should be organized under appropriate headings. The title page should include title, authors, affiliations, and complete addresses, indicating to whom proofs should be sent. In the case of a long title (over 50 characters and spaces), please include a shortened running title. A one-paragraph abstract of 100–250 words should be submitted with full-length articles. Abstracts are not required for Notes or Brief Communications. Upon acceptance, authors are to submit their final accepted articles in MSWord.

Notation

Authors are requested to use typewritten letters, numbers, and symbols for mathematical material wherever possible. Unusual symbols should be identified the first time they occur. Abbreviations of chemical compounds that might be confusing to the reader should be written out at their first mention, with the abbreviation in parentheses.

Units

Authors are encouraged to use the SI system of units. The international trend toward the adoption of the SI system is recognized by the Editors as having particular merit in the interdisciplinary field of aerosol research.

Footnotes and References

Footnotes to the text are indicated by superior Arabic numerals, numbered consecutively throughout the manuscript. References to the literature in the text should be quoted in the form Jones (1950) or, if there are more than three authors, Jones et al. (1950). The list of references should be given at the end of the text double-spaced, and in alphabetical order (each author's surname first).

Examples are:
Journal. Friedlander, S. K. (1982). Deposition of Aerosols in a Human Lung Model. Aerosol Sci. Technol. 1:23–29.
Book. Bellamy, L. T. (1975). The Infrared Spectra of Complex Molecules. John Wiley & Sons, New York, p. 28.
Edited Book. Henry, R.H. (1991). Multivariate Receptor Models, in Receptro Modeling for Air Quality Management, P.K. Hopke, ed., Elsevier Science Publishers, Amsterdam, 117–147.

A conference proceedings should be styled as a book with publisher or institution sponsoring publication and year pub-lished, as well as the year the conference was held.

Tables are numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. Footnotes to tables are indicated by superior italic letters, beginning with a. Authors should organize their table to be as easy to read as possible. Vertical or slanted rules should be avoided.

Illustrations

For the initial submission, please submit a single PDF file of the text with all fonts and illustrations imbedded. Upon final acceptance for publication, a second set of illustrations (line drawings, halftones, photos, photo-micrographs, etc.), will be required. These illustration files should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and all artwork should follow these guidelines:

  • Submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files
  • EPS, TIFF or PSD format only
  • 300 dpi or higher, optimized for greyscale
  • Sized to fit on a full page (8 1/2” x 11”) and proportioned to fit the journal page when reduced (see below for further detail)
  • Lettering (in a sans serif font) and data points should be in large enough to be easily read when reduced to fit in one column (3.5” in width) or over two columns (7.25” in width).
  • All illustrations are to be numbered consecutively, according to their appearance in the text.

Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first page with color is $900.00. The next three pages with color are $450.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages. Good-quality color prints or files should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.

Proofs and Reprints

Authors receive page proofs of their articles, to be proofread, corrected, and returned within 48 hours of receipt. The lead author will receive 25 complimentary reprints of their article upon registering with Rightslink, our authorized reprint provider. Authors will need to create a unique account and register with Rightslink for this free service. The link is provided at the time of page proof review.
